What Is the Cohere API? Free Trial Key, Pricing, Command Models, Embed, Rerank, Turkish Support and Data

You send requests to the Cohere API from code to use language models built for business use (the Command family), the Embed and Rerank models for search, and Parse, which extracts content from documents; there's also a Playground for trying things out. When you sign up, a free trial key is created automatically: it's free but limited (20 requests per minute on Chat models, 1,000 calls per month), and production or commercial use isn't allowed. For commercial use you get a production key and pay as you go. Command A was trained to perform well in 23 languages, Turkish among them. According to the privacy policy, trial users' inputs and outputs may be used for research and development; don't enter personal data with a trial key.

What Is the Cohere API Used For? Can I Use It Without Code?

Cohere offers models for companies to build AI into their applications. The API is how a program sends requests to Cohere: you send the text and an API key (a secret password that identifies your account), and the model returns a response. The main models: Command (chat, summaries, translation, agents that use tools, and systems that answer from your own documents), Embed (turns text into numbers that carry its meaning, so search works by meaning instead of word matching), Rerank (reorders the results of an existing search by how relevant they are to the question), Parse (extracts structured data from PDFs and forms) and Transcribe (converts speech to text).

Can I use it without code?

Partly. Cohere's Playground (dashboard.cohere.com/playground/chat) lets you chat in the browser, have text summarized, and have emails and articles written. To connect it to your application, you need the API and code.

Who it's for: developers building internal search, document Q&A or translation systems; teams that want to make an existing search engine more accurate (Rerank).

How Do You Get a Cohere API Key?

  1. Create an account at dashboard.cohere.com/welcome/register. Once the account is created, a trial key is generated for you automatically; it appears on the API Keys page.
  2. Install the SDK (tabs below). Python, TypeScript, Java and Go are supported.
  3. Don't write the key into your code; read it from an environment variable.
  4. For commercial use, request a production key: the “Get Your Production key” button on the Billing and Usage page in the dashboard (requires Owner permissions).
Library› pip install -U cohere

Every account starts as a personal account and can only get a trial key; to get a production key you need to join an organization or fill in the application form. With a production key you accept Cohere's SaaS agreement and terms of use; if you flag “sensitive use,” the key runs with trial limits until the security team approves it (up to 72 business hours).

Whether sign-up requires phone verification, has an age requirement or restricts access from Turkey is not stated in the official documentation; check what the sign-up screen asks for.

How Do You Send Your First Request? A Ready-Made Example

The example from the official Chat API page (model names change often; current names are in the “Which model?” section):

Python› import cohere co = cohere.ClientV2(api_key="<YOUR_API_KEY>") res = co.chat( model="command-a-plus-05-2026", messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Write a title for a blog post about API design. Only output the title text."}], ) print(res.message.content[0].text)
No code: try it in the Playground"Label the review below as positive, negative or mixed, and explain why in one sentence: “The product is nice, but the shipping took far too long.”"Open the Playground at dashboard.cohere.com/playground/chat. For the quality of Turkish replies, see the “Does it work in Turkish?” section.

Embed and Rerank are called with the same API key, from separate endpoints. In Rerank, “one search” is a query with up to 100 documents; a document over 500 tokens is split into chunks, and each chunk counts as a separate document.

A trial key is limited to 1,000 API calls per month. Even a production key works with trial-like limits on the new Chat models (Command A+, A Reasoning, A Translate, A Vision); to use them in production, you're asked to talk to the sales team.

Does Cohere Use My Data for Training?

Trial key

According to the privacy policy (May 1, 2026), the inputs and outputs of trial and research users may be used for research and development (including usage trends and improving the product's performance and safety). Cohere says it de-identifies this data first. Don't enter personal data with a trial key; the document explicitly asks for this.

Enterprise and production

Enterprise users can control whether their data is used for training and can request a DPA; inputs and outputs are generally retained for 30 days for enterprise users. What the default is for a non-enterprise production key is not stated in the documentation; ask Cohere.

Private and cloud deployment

It says that in private deployments and on third-party clouds such as AWS, Azure and GCP, Cohere has no access to the data and doesn't use it for training. The model page also mentions that de-identified data in Cohere's own hosted environments may be used in limited cases, where user controls and the terms allow it.

KVKK and account deletion

No KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law) notice specific to Turkey appears on the official pages, and the steps for deleting an account aren't in the documentation. This is not legal advice; if you'll be processing personal data, read the terms and the DPA yourself.
