Frontend Design plugin: getting original interface design from Claude Code
You install the plugin and have Claude Code build a web interface; Claude first drafts a short design plan specific to the topic, avoids patterns that look "AI-made", then writes the code and critiques its own work. It is the official plugin Anthropic publishes for Claude Code, and it contains a single skill (an instruction file). Free and open source (Apache-2.0), but Claude Code is not available on the free plan. It does not access your files or the internet by itself: it contains only instruction text.

What does Frontend Design do?
Landing pages and dashboards made with Claude often look alike: the same color scheme, the same card layout, a small uppercase label above every heading. This plugin adds an instruction to Claude Code telling it to choose a design direction specific to the job before coding the interface.
- It defines the topic, the audience and the page's main job; if the brief doesn't say, it proposes them and asks for approval.
- It drafts a short design plan: 4–6 colors, typefaces, a rough layout, principles.
- It reviews the plan against the brief ("is this a generic default?") and says what it changed and why.
- It writes the code and, if the environment allows, critiques its own work with a screenshot.
It is used both when building a new interface and when restyling an existing one. It also asks for sparing use of motion, mobile responsiveness, keyboard focus and plain interface copy.
!The plugin's GitHub README and marketplace page describe an older version ("high-impact animations", scroll-triggered reveal effects). The current instruction (SKILL.md) says nearly the opposite: motion the user did not trigger should be rare and deliberate, entrance animations that appear on every section are treated as a sign of "AI work", and the reduced-motion preference should be respected. This guide follows the current instruction.
Who it helps: People who have Claude Code build marketing pages, portfolios or dashboards and are tired of the output looking like a template. For product app screens, also introduce your own design system.
How do you install Frontend Design?
The commands come from the Claude Code plugin documentation. The install command does not install right away; it opens the plugin's panel.
› /plugin install frontend-design@claude-plugins-officialIn the panel that opens, choose the scope: just you (all projects), this project (everyone in the repository) or just you in this project. To activate it immediately in the open session, type /reload-plugins or restart Claude Code.
› claude plugin install frontend-design@claude-plugins-officialIn the Code tab (local session), follow + › Plugins › Add plugin › frontend-design next to the message box.
After installing, you don't need to call anything: when you ask for front-end work, Claude loads the skill automatically. To call it manually, type /frontend-design:frontend-design.
How do you use Frontend Design?
Write your request as usual; Claude drafts the design plan first. If you don't want it to code before you see the plan, say so explicitly.
Mobile responsiveness, keyboard focus and the reduced-motion preference are part of the skill's own quality baseline; still, test the output yourself on a small screen and with a keyboard.
Where does it work? Claude Code and claude.ai
| Claude Code (terminal, VS Code)Yes | Installed as a plugin. |
|---|---|
| Claude desktop, Code tabYes | In a local session, via + › Plugins. |
| Claude Code cloud sessions (claude.ai/code)No | A plugin installed on your computer does not load in cloud sessions; there, the skills enabled in your claude.ai account are used. |
| claude.ai chatPartly | The same instruction is in Anthropic's example skill set; it is turned on from Customize then Skills, and code execution must be enabled. |
Which plans it is available on in claude.ai is contradictory in the official sources: one help page says the free plan is included, while the skills repository says paid plans. If it doesn't appear in your list, you can install it as a plugin in Claude Code.
Don't install both: installing this plugin and the example skill set (example-skills) in Claude Code means two copies of the same instruction.
Does it access my files or the internet?
The plugin itself reads nothing: it contains only instruction text (SKILL.md). Claude writes the code with its own tools, under your Claude Code permission rules.
The plugin does not write; the agent writes project files with your permissions.
The plugin has no delete step.
The plugin makes no network calls. Auto-update is on by default in the official plugin marketplace: if the instruction changes, the new version arrives in your next session.
To turn off auto-update: /plugin › Marketplaces › claude-plugins-official › Disable auto-update.
!A plugin you install in a team project with "project" scope goes into the repository and reaches everyone on the project.
The plugin folder has no hooks, MCP servers, scripts, agents or commands; only SKILL.md and LICENSE.txt. There are no GitHub security advisories for the repository (checked October 15, 2026); no registered advisories appear. This is not a security audit or certification, and it does not mean "safe".
Is Frontend Design free?
The plugin itself is free and open source (Apache-2.0). But Claude Code, which it runs in, is not on Claude's free plan: you need a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) or a pay-as-you-go Anthropic Console account. The desktop app's Code tab requires a paid subscription.
The skill instruction goes into the context Claude reads, which takes a small share of your usage allowance. The /plugin panel in Claude Code shows the plugin's estimated "Context cost". No local-currency price is published.
Common issues and fixes
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| I don't see any effect after installing | Type /reload-plugins in the open session or restart Claude Code; the skill loads automatically when you ask for front-end work. |
| The output still looks like a template | Make the brief more specific (target audience, tone, references); ask Claude to show the design plan first and ask what it changed and why. |
| Both this plugin and the example skill set are installed | That means two copies of the same instruction; remove one. |
| It doesn't work in a cloud session (claude.ai/code) | A plugin installed on your computer doesn't load in cloud sessions; turn the skill on in your claude.ai account. |
| The instruction suddenly changed | Auto-update is on in the official marketplace; to turn it off, use Disable auto-update in the /plugin panel. |
How do you uninstall Frontend Design?
- Plugin panel: Remove the frontend-design plugin from the /plugin panel in Claude Code.
- By command:
claude plugin uninstall frontend-design@claude-plugins-official(Claude Code's general plugin command; this plugin's documentation doesn't list it separately). - If you installed it with project scope: Also remove the plugin setting from the repository; otherwise it keeps reaching everyone on the project.
