What Is the LottieFiles Motion Design Skill? Setup, What It Does and What It Doesn't

You install the skill with one line (`npx skills add LottieFiles/motion-design-skill`); before writing animation code, your coding agent then reasons through timing, easing, sequencing and Disney's animation principles. It consists only of Markdown files; despite its name, it does not produce Lottie files and does not connect to a LottieFiles account or API: according to the README it is "philosophy-first, implementation-agnostic" and works with any animation system, such as CSS, Framer Motion, GSAP, Lottie or Spring. MIT licensed, no account or key required.

What is the Motion Design Skill for?

A skill is an instruction package that teaches an agent how to work on a topic. This skill makes the agent write animation code by motion principles rather than arbitrary values: choosing duration and easing, sequencing elements (choreography), Disney's animation principles, and respecting the reduced-motion preference (prefers-reduced-motion).

The skill does not produce Lottie animation files (JSON or dotLottie) and does not connect to LottieFiles. All 18 files in the repository are Markdown; there are no scripts, hooks or MCP. Lottie is only named in the list of supported animation systems. The output is the quality of the animation code the agent writes.

Who it's for: Developers who build web interfaces with an agent and find the animations inconsistent, excessive or too fast.

How do you install the Motion Design Skill?

Requirements: Node.js (for npx) and a coding agent. No account, API key or plan needed.

Install (README)› npx skills add LottieFiles/motion-design-skill

The README says it supports "40+ agents including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot and more"; the repository doesn't give the folder path per agent, the skills CLI determines it. The npx skills@1.7.1 version pin on the atlas card is not in the README; the official command has no version.

The skills CLI that runs the install command collects anonymous usage data; DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 or DO_NOT_TRACK=1 turns it off. The README doesn't say whether it works in the Claude.ai web chat.

How do you use the Motion Design Skill?

You don't need to call it separately; the agent brings in the skill when animation work comes up. Write your request normally and name the system to use (CSS, Framer Motion, GSAP, etc.).

Card entrance"Add an entrance animation to this card list (Framer Motion). Choose duration, easing and sequencing based on motion principles, and turn the animation off if the reduced-motion preference is on."
Review existing animation"Look at the animations on this page from a motion design perspective: which ones are too fast, too long or play at the same time? Suggest fixes."

Which agents does the Motion Design Skill work in?

Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitHub CopilotYesThe README names these agents explicitly.
Other agents supported by the skills CLIYesThe README says "40+ agents"; the full list is not in the README.
Claude.ai (web chat)UnclearThe README says nothing.

What does the Motion Design Skill access?

Reads

Nothing on its own: it only gives the agent instructions.

Writes

The skill doesn't write. The install tool copies the skill files into the agent's folder; the animation code is written by the agent's existing tools, and the agent's approval rules apply.

Deletes

The skill deletes nothing.

Data

The skill files contain no network calls or addresses. Only the install tool sends anonymous usage data.

The repository has no scripts, hooks or MCP. No entry appears in the GitHub Security Advisories list. This does not mean "safe".

Is the Motion Design Skill free?

Yes. The skill is MIT-licensed open source; the repository has no paid version, plan or account requirement. It has nothing to do with LottieFiles' own plans, because the skill doesn't connect to that service. The agent tool you use (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) has its own separate cost. There is no price in any currency.

Common problems

What happensWhat to do
I expected a Lottie fileThe skill teaches principles; it doesn't produce files. An "add a Lottie skill" request is open in the repository (#1).

How do you remove the Motion Design Skill?

  1. By command: Use the npx skills remove command from the skills CLI README.
  2. Manually: Delete the skill folder from the agent's skill directory.

Frequently asked questions

Does this skill produce Lottie animation files?

No. The README and SKILL.md describe it as a guide that teaches motion principles; the repository has no script or tool that produces Lottie, and the skill doesn't connect to LottieFiles. Lottie is only listed among the supported animation systems.

Do I need a LottieFiles account or API key?

No. The README and the skill files mention no account, key or LottieFiles address.

Is it paid?

No; the repository has no fee or plan, and it is MIT licensed.

Which animation libraries does it work with?

The README says it is implementation-agnostic; it lists systems such as CSS, Framer Motion, GSAP, Lottie and Spring.
