What Is Sentry MCP? How to Connect It to Claude, Skills, Seer and Permissions

You ask your assistant about an error or a slow request; Sentry MCP searches and inspects the errors, events, stack traces and performance traces in Sentry. It is the official remote MCP server hosted by Sentry (address https://mcp.sentry.dev/mcp); the connection is set up with OAuth, and no separate API key is needed. On the consent screen you choose which "skill" groups to grant: Inspect (reading) and Seer are on by default, while Triage, which changes issue status, and the skill that manages projects, teams and alert rules are off by default; the delete tools are also in the latter. No separate fee is listed for the server, but Seer is a separately paid add-on.

What does Sentry MCP do?

MCP is the standard that lets AI programs connect to outside tools. With Sentry MCP, the assistant reads organizations, projects, issues, events and their attachments, stack traces, logs, performance traces, profiles, replays, releases, monitors and alert rules, and searches the Sentry documentation. You can ask questions like "Which error has repeated most since yesterday?" directly.

Connection via OAuth; write and delete skills are off by default, and you choose on the consent screen.

Number of tools: the old catalog said 20; the Sentry repository has dozens of tools, fewer than a hundred, and part of them appear in the default list. No single number is given.

Who it helps: Developers who would rather ask the assistant than click through the Sentry interface while debugging, and who want to tie an error back to the code.

How do I connect Sentry MCP?

You need: a Sentry account. You can lock the address to a single organization or project: /mcp/{organization} or /mcp/{organization}/{project}; Sentry recommends locking to a project where possible. The commands are taken from Sentry's pages.

Add› claude mcp add --transport http sentry https://mcp.sentry.dev/mcp

On first use, a Sentry sign-in (OAuth) opens in the browser. To lock it, add the organization and project name to the end of the address. Alternatively, there is a plugin route with claude plugin marketplace add getsentry/sentry-mcp and claude plugin install sentry-mcp@sentry-mcp.

Without OAuth, there is also a direct Sentry token route for clients that support custom HTTP headers (Authorization: Sentry-Bearer); in this mode all active skills are on by default, and the token's lifetime, renewal and revocation are your responsibility.

How do I use Sentry MCP?

Once connected, you write your request normally. Start with read-only tasks.

Error summary"In Sentry, list the three most frequently repeated errors in the "web-app" project over the last 24 hours; for each, give the number of affected users and the release where it was first seen."
Stack trace"Read the stack trace of this Sentry issue and help me find the line of code in our project that causes the error. Do not change anything in Sentry."

To change issue status or add a note, you need to turn on the Triage skill in the connection; while it is off, the assistant does not see these tools.

Which clients does Sentry MCP work with?

Claude CodeYesA single command or a plugin.
Claude (connector directory)YesAnthropic verified; the page does not state which Claude versions it works in.
Cursor, VS CodeYesButton or setting.
Other MCP clientsYesSentry: any client that supports HTTP transport can connect.

What does Sentry MCP access, and what can it change?

Reads

Organizations, projects, teams, issues, events and their attachments, stack traces, breadcrumbs, logs, traces, profiles, replays, releases, monitors, alert rules, dashboards and the Sentry documentation (Inspect skill, on by default).

Writes

OFF by default: Triage (updating issue status and assignment, adding notes, linking external records) and Manage Projects & Teams (creating and updating projects, teams, DSNs, alert rules and monitors). Seer (on by default) starts a new analysis run in Sentry.

Deletes

Only in the Manage Projects & Teams skill (off by default): deleting alert rules, metric monitors, monitor environments and uptime monitors; removing a team from a project. The source code marks these as destructive.

Data

The assistant reads Sentry data through a server running on Cloudflare. Error records can contain outside text and user data; the data it reads goes to the AI service you use. Sentry shows no separate privacy statement for MCP.

You choose which skills to grant in the connection. If you won't have it do any writing or deleting, stick with Inspect; skills that are off do not appear to the assistant as tools. Text in error records is untrusted input and may try to steer the assistant.

GitHub Security Advisories is empty; no recorded advisory appears for @sentry/mcp-server. That does not mean "safe". Each organization requires separate consent, and actions are limited to your user permissions in Sentry. How an admin can turn off MCP is not stated in the official documentation.

Is Sentry MCP free? Is Seer paid?

No separate fee is listed for the MCP server; a Sentry account is required. Which Sentry plans (including the free Developer plan) allow MCP is not stated in the official documentation. Seer, however, is a separately paid add-on.

Common problems and fixes

What happensWhat to do
Reported by users After 1.3.2, the Claude Code plugin gives an OAuth "invalid_target" errorOpen issue (#1247): it comes from the plugin adding a utm_source parameter to the address. Workaround: add it without the plugin, with the plain claude mcp add command; whether the patch has shipped is unclear in the official sources.
Reported by users search_events returns 404 on self-hosted SentryOpen issue (#1497); no documented fix.
Search tools do not appear in a local installThe AI-powered search tools need an LLM provider key and the EMBEDDED_AGENT_PROVIDER setting; without them, only those tools stay off.
No Seer on self-hosted SentrySeer is not part of self-hosted Sentry; if your own install has it, turn it on with --skills=inspect,seer.

How do I disconnect Sentry MCP?

  1. Claude Code: claude mcp remove sentry (Claude Code's general MCP removal command; the Sentry docs do not list it separately).
  2. If you installed the Sentry Agent Plugin: npx @sentry/agent-plugin remove (Sentry docs).
  3. Other clients: Delete the sentry entry from the MCP settings.

The steps for revoking the OAuth authorization on the Sentry side are not given on the official pages.

Frequently asked questions

Will Sentry MCP change or delete my errors?

Not by default: the write and delete tools are in the Triage and Manage Projects and Teams skills, and those are off by default. You choose which skills to grant in the connection.

Do I need an API key for Sentry MCP?

No; you connect to the remote server with OAuth. Clients that support custom HTTP headers also have a direct Sentry token route. The local stdio install, however, requires a Sentry access token.

Is Seer paid?

Yes. According to the Sentry pricing page, it is a separate product added to your current subscription at $40 a month per active contributor. No separate fee is listed for the MCP server.

Does it work with self-hosted Sentry?

It works with the local stdio install using the --host flag; the README describes this mode as in development. Seer is not part of self-hosted Sentry.

What is the license?

FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0: free for your own use, building a competing commercial product is prohibited, and it converts to Apache 2.0 after 2 years.
