Can I Do It Myself?

Adding automatic captions to a Reels video

You can do it yourselfDone with ready-made tools, no technical knowledge needed.

Generate and correct automatic captions for a short talking video. It makes the video understandable for people watching with the sound off.

Estimated time: About 20 minutes per video (for a first-timer, an estimate)

Steps

  1. 1

    Record clean audio

Speak in a quiet room, close to the microphone. Caption accuracy depends on audio quality.

  2. 2

    Generate the captions

Use CapCut's auto-caption tool, or transcribe on your own computer with Whisper if you don't want to upload the video to the cloud.

  3. 3

    Correct line by line

Pay special attention to brand names, product names and numbers.

  4. 4

    Make it readable

Don't place text too close to the bottom edge; Instagram's interface can cover it.

Risks and things to watch

CapCut's terms of service grant ByteDance a perpetual, broad license to the content you upload; keep this in mind for videos with a client's face or voice. Automatic captions get proper names and numbers wrong.
