Email automation that sorts your inbox and prepares reply drafts

Every morning it sorts the new emails in your inbox in the cloud and prepares a DRAFT in Gmail for the ones that need a reply. The code never sends a message: you read and send the drafts yourself. Set it up first with a separate test account; the Google permission covers more than drafts.

Compiled from the official documentation. The basis for each step is listed under it.

What you get

Every morning, drafts ready in your Gmail Drafts folder for the emails that need a reply; messages it is not sure about are flagged in the record for human review.

How it runs

Runs on its own at the time you set. A Python function deployed to Modal runs on its own every morning, reads new emails and creates drafts in Gmail. Creating a draft is a visible change in Gmail, but no message is ever sent.

Where it runs

Modal cloud: the job runs on Modal's servers, even when your computer is off.

What the cost depends on

Subscription · Hosting · API usage · Setup service

Who it is for

  • Small business owners who get a lot of email every day and spend time writing replies
  • People who want to approve each reply themselves but want the first draft ready

Who it is not for

  • Anyone who wants emails sent automatically without human approval: this system does not send
  • Anyone who does not want confidential correspondence (health, legal, finance) to go to a cloud model: the email text is sent to the model provider
  • Very busy inboxes: one run looks at no more than 200 messages, and because Gmail results are not sorted, some messages may be skipped
  • Company Google accounts without permission for third-party apps: admin approval may be required

How the system fits together

Gmail → Composio connection → Python code (sorting and draft text with a Claude model) → Gmail draft → your review. The code is scheduled on Modal every morning; the record lives on a Modal Volume.

  • Gmail required

The inbox that is read and where the drafts are written

    Official site

  • Composio required

Secure connection to the Gmail account and the read/draft tools

    Tool guide

  • Modal required

Runs the Python function in the cloud every morning and stores the persistent record file

    Tool guide

  • Claude API (Anthropic) required

Classifies the email and writes the draft text; a separate account and cost item

    Tool guide

  • Claude Code optional

For preparing and adapting these code files; not the place where it runs continuously

Alternative: Not needed if you want to save and adapt the code by hand

    Tool guide

  • n8n optional

Alternative no-code method for the same job; not covered in this guide

Alternative: If you already use n8n

    Tool guide

Connections between tools

  • Gmail Composio · Automatic via API · Google OAuth consent; Composio stores and refreshes the access token · permission: According to Composio, the managed Gmail app requests full mailbox access (https://mail.google.com/) plus profile/email and contacts/profile permissions; the scopes are fixed and there is no draft-only option (vendor blog post, not a Google document). In the code only the read and draft tools are enabled; the 'no sending' guarantee rests on this tool filter.
  • Python function (Modal) Composio · Automatic via API · Composio Python SDK; session.execute with COMPOSIO_API_KEY · permission: The session only enables the GMAIL_FETCH_EMAILS, GMAIL_FETCH_MESSAGE_BY_MESSAGE_ID (read) and GMAIL_CREATE_EMAIL_DRAFT (draft) tools; the code also separately refuses to call any tool not on this list.
  • Python function (Modal) Claude API · Automatic via API · HTTPS, messages.create with ANTHROPIC_API_KEY · permission: Only sends and receives text; no tool calls
  • Python function (Modal) Modal Volume · Via a file · islenenler-<user ID>.json (JSON), on a Modal Volume

Recurring runs

What starts it
Modal scheduler (modal.Cron): every day at 08:00, time zone Europe/Istanbul. It only becomes active once the app is deployed.
Where it runs
Modal cloud: the job runs on Modal's servers, even when your computer is off.
Approval
You read, edit and send the drafts in Gmail yourself. Messages with low confidence, missing information or an unreadable body get no draft and are flagged 'insan_kontrolu' (human review). The code only calls the read and draft tools; the send tool is not on the allowed list. But the Google permission you grant also covers sending, so set it up first with a separate test account.
Not processing the same item twice
The processed message ID, its status and the created draft ID are kept in the islenenler-<user ID>.json file on a Modal Volume; it is committed after every message. A summary of each run (read, new, drafts, errors, warnings) is also kept in the same file, covering the last 30 runs. A message hit by a temporary error stays 'beklemede' (pending) and is tried at most 2 times. The thread that got a draft (threadId) is recorded too; no second draft is opened in the same thread. A lock is held in a Modal Dict so that only one real run happens at a time. A Python variable in memory is not enough.
How to stop it
Remove the Cron line from the code and redeploy, or stop the app permanently with modal app stop (last step). Modal does not allow pausing a schedule.

Before you start

Computer and software

  • Operating system: Windows, macOS, Linux
  • Python: 3.11 to 3.15 (composio 0.28.0 requires this range)
  • composio (Python package): 0.28.0
  • modal (Python package): 1.6.2
  • anthropic (Python package, only in the cloud container): 1.15.0

Accounts

  • Gmail (Google) account — The mailbox to read and write drafts in. No extra requirement for a personal account. The connection may be blocked if a Workspace admin has restricted third-party apps or the account is enrolled in Advanced Protection.
  • Composio account — Manages the Gmail connection and tool calls. The Hobby plan is $0 and needs no card; 100,000 tool calls a month, 20K of them on the shared app.
  • Modal account — Runs the Python function in the cloud on a schedule and stores the record file. The Starter plan has no monthly fee; according to the pricing page it includes $30 of compute a month, and usage above that is billed. The billing documentation requires a payment method (card) on the account to use Modal. At most 5 deployed crons.
  • Anthropic Console account and API key — The model that classifies emails and writes drafts. API usage is billed per token; you need a Claude Console account and an API key.

Step-by-step setup

Which one do you want to do?

The steps you check stay only in this browser; they do not confirm that the setup works. You finished 0/10 steps.

  1. Step 1 · In the terminal

Prepare the folder, the Python environment and the example settings file

What for: Give the code its own tidy place and pinned package versions.

    1. Create a new, empty folder (e.g. gelen-eposta-otomasyonu) and open the terminal in it. Python 3.11 to 3.15 must be installed.
    2. The first command creates a separate Python environment (.venv) inside the folder; other Python work on your computer is not affected. The second command installs two packages at pinned versions: composio (Gmail connection) and modal (cloud tool).
    3. Save the three files below in the same folder: ortak.py (Composio connection, read and draft helpers), govde.py (turns the email body into plain text; prints only structure to the log, not content) and ayarlar.ornek.env (example only; do not write real keys into the file). The Anthropic package is installed in the cloud container from otomasyon.py; your computer does not need it.
    WindowsFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › python -m venv .venv
    WindowsFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv\Scripts\python.exe -m pip install composio==0.28.0 modal==1.6.2

Version pinned (as of October 17, 2026). Check the vendor documentation before moving to a newer version.

    macOS · LinuxFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › python3 -m venv .venv
    macOS · LinuxFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv/bin/python -m pip install composio==0.28.0 modal==1.6.2

Version pinned (as of October 17, 2026). Check the vendor documentation before moving to a newer version.

uyari.append("more messages in the window; the rest were not read")

The session and execute calls come from Composio's official example, the result check from the SDK source, and the tool names and parameters from the Composio Gmail tools page. The list is requested in lightweight mode (verbose=False); the body of each new message is read in full with GMAIL_FETCH_MESSAGE_BY_MESSAGE_ID. The tools page defines the output only as 'data' and does not give the inner path; that is why bul() searches for keys in nested data.

Per the Gmail API MessagePart definition: the body is base64url-encoded in body.data, and in a multipart message it is nested under parts. A part that cannot be decoded counts as empty; the message goes to human review as 'body could not be read'. maskele() prints only the structure for the log: data, raw, snippet, subject and other text appear as type and length (e.g. "snippet": "<str 182>"), values containing an address as ***@***; only fields that carry no content, such as mimeType, messageId, threadId and labelIds, show their value.

    How you know it worked

    • A .venv folder appears in the folder.
    • The package installation finishes without errors.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • python command not found
Install Python, then close and reopen the terminal; on Windows the py command sometimes works instead of python.
    • pip gives an error like 'requires Python'
Switch to a Python version in the 3.11–3.15 range; composio requires this range.
  2. Step 2 · In the browser

Set it up first with a separate test Gmail account, not your main mailbox

What for: See the system in a risk-free inbox before granting a broad permission.

You check this step yourself; the system should not move past it without your approval.

    1. Create a new Gmail account just for this test (keep your main account out of it). From your main address, send a few sample emails to this account: a customer email asking a question, an ad-like message and an informational message.
    2. Why a separate account: in the next step Google's consent screen asks for a permission MUCH broader than drafts. According to Composio's own blog post, the managed Gmail connection grants full mailbox access (https://mail.google.com/) with profile and email permission, plus contacts/profile permissions, and the scopes are fixed. (This comes from Composio's vendor page, not from a Google document.)
    3. The 'no message is sent' guarantee rests only on the tool filter in this setup's code (only three tools run: GMAIL_FETCH_EMAILS and GMAIL_FETCH_MESSAGE_BY_MESSAGE_ID read, GMAIL_CREATE_EMAIL_DRAFT opens a draft); the Google permission you grant is broader than that. If something goes wrong in the test account, your real correspondence is not affected. You will move to your main account later, in a separate, deliberate step.

    How you know it worked

    • Three sample messages appear in the test account's inbox.
    • Your main account is not connected to anything in this step.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • On the new account the consent screen says 'this app is blocked'
Make sure the test account is a personal (non-Workspace) account; admin-managed accounts can block third-party apps.
    • The sample messages landed in Spam instead of the inbox
Move the message out of Spam or resend it with a different subject and content; the query only looks at the inbox.
  3. Step 3 · In the terminal

Connect the test account with Composio and read the permissions

What for: Grant mailbox access once, with your own approval.

You check this step yourself; the system should not move past it without your approval.

    1. Create a Composio account and generate an API key in the Settings section of the dashboard (the Hobby plan does not ask for a credit card). Do not write the key into a file or share it with anyone.
    2. In the terminal, set the key as an environment variable for that window only (first command), then save and run the baglan.py file. The key may remain in your command history; close the window when you are done.
    3. Open the printed address in your browser right away (the command does not wait long and fails when time runs out), choose the TEST Gmail account and READ the permission screen. According to Composio, full mail access and contacts/profile permissions are requested; there is no draft-only Google permission. If you do not want what is on the screen, do not approve.
    4. The list on the consent screen is what applies; Composio's blog post says the scopes are fixed, so you cannot narrow the permissions. To narrow them you need the your-own-Google-app route (alternative route).

    hesap = istek.wait_for_connection(timeout=120)
    print("Connected. User ID:", KULLANICI, "| account:", hesap.id)

Derived from the official 'Manual auth management' example; according to the Python SDK source, the wait time is in seconds.

    How you know it worked

    • A connection address appears in the terminal.
    • After approval, the line 'Connected. User ID: ... | account: ...' appears.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • Without approval, the command ends with a timeout error after 2 minutes
In the Python SDK the wait is in seconds (timeout=120 in baglan.py) and it raises an error when it runs out. Run the command again and open the address right away. TypeScript examples online use milliseconds; in Python you write seconds.
    • Google shows an 'app blocked' or 'unverified app' screen
If you added any extra permissions, remove them; on a Workspace account the admin may have restricted third-party apps. If it is still not solved, discuss the your-own-Google-app route (alternative route) and the weekly reconnect burden with support.
    • ModuleNotFoundError: ortak (or govde)
baglan.py, ortak.py and govde.py must be in the same folder; run the command in that folder.
  4. Step 4 · In the terminal

Connect Modal and put the API credentials in a secret

What for: Keep the keys in the cloud's secret store, not in the code.

    1. Create an account at modal.com. According to Modal's billing documentation, the account must have a payment method (card) to use the service; the Starter plan has no monthly fee and includes $30 of usage a month. If you like, set a workspace budget in the dashboard. Then run the modal setup command below; a browser opens and connects your computer to your Modal account.
    2. Generate an API key in the Anthropic Console (platform.claude.com). The model provider is a separate account and a separate cost item.
    3. Create a new secret in the Secrets section of the Modal dashboard. According to the documentation the dashboard offers starter templates (Postgres etc.); do not use a template, choose the option that lets you enter your own key-value pairs (the documentation does not name this option). Name it 'gelen-eposta-anahtarlar'.
    4. Put these keys in it: COMPOSIO_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, MODEL_ADI, KULLANICI_KIMLIGI (gelen-kutusu-deneme-1 for the test). For MODEL_ADI use the value in the example file or enter a model ID your account can access. Do not write the keys into code files or into a chat.
    5. After saving the secret, run the modal secret list command in the terminal: the list shows only names and dates, not the key values.
    WindowsFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv\Scripts\python.exe -m modal setup
    macOS · LinuxFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv/bin/python -m modal setup
    WindowsFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv\Scripts\python.exe -m modal secret list
    macOS · LinuxFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv/bin/python -m modal secret list

    How you know it worked

    • The terminal says Modal authentication is complete.
    • The name 'gelen-eposta-anahtarlar' appears in the modal secret list output.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • An error like 'Secret not found' when you run it
The secret must be named exactly gelen-eposta-anahtarlar; otomasyon.py looks for this name.
    • The model call fails with 'model not found'
Replace the MODEL_ADI value with a valid model ID shown in your Console account; the model name must not be made up.
  5. Step 5 · In a code editor

Write the sorting rules and the persistent processing record into the code

What for: Decide up front which emails get a draft and make sure the same message is never processed twice.

    1. Create the otomasyon.py, islem.py, kayit.py and siniflandir.py files with the content below (or ask a coding agent to adapt them to your own rules; the agent only prepares the code, it runs on Modal). All six files (ortak, govde, siniflandir, kayit, islem, otomasyon) must be in the same folder.
    2. Rules: a draft is written only for messages in the 'cevap_gerekli' (needs a reply) class with a confidence of 0.75 or higher. Ads and informational messages become 'atlandi' (skipped). Low confidence, missing information, an unreadable body, an empty sender address or thread ID, and a cut-off model response become 'insan_kontrolu' (human review). At most 20 drafts per run; messages over the limit are not recorded.
    3. Retries: only messages from the last 2 days are read. One draft per thread: if a draft was opened in the same thread (threadId) in this or an earlier run, the new message becomes 'insan_kontrolu' (draft already exists in this thread); reply to that thread yourself. The code does not check whether you already replied to the thread; check the draft before sending.
    4. Read limit: one run looks at no more than 4 pages x 50 = 200 messages; Gmail results are not sorted and the window is the last 2 days. In a busy inbox some messages may be skipped; this is written to the run summary as a warning. Timeout is 3600 s. For manual runs, --sayi limits how many new messages are checked (default 5).
    5. Persistent record: the message and draft IDs are written to the islenenler-<user ID>.json file on a Modal Volume and committed. A Python variable is not enough because it resets on every run; a Volume was chosen over a Dict for the record because a Dict entry is deleted if it is not accessed for 7 days. The short-lived run lock, on the other hand, lives in the Dict (with a timestamp).
    6. If an error happens BEFORE the draft call (an Anthropic rate-limit or overloaded response, a network outage, a Composio read error), the message is saved as 'beklemede' (pending) and tried once more on the next run; at most 2 attempts, and if the second also fails it becomes 'insan_kontrolu'. A 'beklemede' message that falls out of the 2-day window also becomes 'insan_kontrolu' and shows up in the run summary as the pencere_disi (out of window) count.
    7. Before the draft call, the message is recorded as 'basladi' (started) and its thread as having a draft. Any uncertainty after the call is made (call error, no ID in the response, the container dying midway) locks the message and the thread permanently: a missing draft is preferred over a duplicate one. In the summary, 'taslak' counts only drafts whose ID was received; 'taslak_cagrisi' counts all attempts.
    8. The list is requested in lightweight mode (verbose=False): the user who opened issue #2187 in the Composio repository wrote that the empty-list problem went away with verbose=false and closed the issue suspecting their own client settings. In lightweight mode the body does not come with the list; the code reads each new message in full with GMAIL_FETCH_MESSAGE_BY_MESSAGE_ID. If messageId is missing, the code does not process the messages and prints a warning.
    9. The email text goes to the Anthropic API; do not route confidential correspondence into this system.

Derived from the Modal schedule (Cron), Secret, Volume and Image examples. In real mode the function first takes a lock in a Modal Dict keyed by the user ID (put, skip_if_exists=True); if the lock is taken it exits without doing anything. The lock is released when the run ends, only if this run's token is still there; a lock older than 2 hours is treated as coming from a run that stopped midway.

The steps of one run: read, sort, open drafts, save. Derived from Composio's execute and pagination rules. Before a draft is opened, the message is recorded as 'basladi' and its thread (threadId) under 'konular'; an error before the call becomes 'beklemede', an error after it becomes a permanent 'insan_kontrolu'. One draft per thread: a message in a thread that already got a draft in the same or an earlier run becomes 'insan_kontrolu' (draft already exists in this thread). A 'beklemede' message that no longer appears in the list becomes 'insan_kontrolu' and is counted as pencere_disi in the summary. For each message only the ID, class and confidence are printed; the model's reasoning is not written to the log, it stays in the record file.

Reads and writes the record file on the Volume (reload, commit) and holds the Dict lock so only one real run happens at a time. With concurrent writes to the same file, a Volume keeps the last writer and offers no file locking; that is why the lock is in a Dict. The lock's value is a random token unique to the run (uuid4 + time). A lock older than 2 hours is taken over by a single run (a separate takeover key with put, skip_if_exists=True); the lock is released only if get() returns the run's own token, so another run's lock is never deleted. An error before the draft call is tried at most 2 times.

Derived from the Anthropic Python messages call example. karar() decides in one place which message gets a draft: only cevap_gerekli, confidence 0.75 or higher, non-empty draft text, and both an address and a thread ID present.

    How you know it worked

    • The folder contains ortak.py, govde.py, siniflandir.py, kayit.py, islem.py and otomasyon.py.
    • The files are ready; in the next step you will run it in dry mode with a small number of messages.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • A second draft appeared for the same message
Check whether that message's ID is in the record file. If the user ID in the file name (KULLANICI_KIMLIGI) differs between two runs, each keeps its own record; set the same ID in the Modal secret and locally. If two real runs started at the same time, the lock stops the second one; if you changed the lock code in kayit.py, revert it.
    • A record is stuck in the 'basladi' status
Check whether the Gmail Drafts folder has a draft for that thread. If not, that message's record needs to be deleted: download the record file, edit it and upload it back (modal volume get --force / put). If you get stuck, ask for support.
    • Messages become insan_kontrolu with the reason 'model response was cut off'
The model's thinking budget may be eating up max_tokens; increase the max_tokens value in siniflandir.py.
    • The error count on the 'Done' line is greater than 0
Download the record file (modal volume get --force). Messages with the status 'beklemede' are tried once more on the next run. The error details are written to the neden (reason) field in the record, not to the log. For messages whose reason is 'draft call error', a draft may have been created; check Gmail Drafts. The calismalar list at the end of the file holds the taslak, beklemede, pencere_disi, hata and uyari counts for each run.
    • The run stopped before printing 'Done'
The timeout may have been reached; on the first run 2 days of backlog is a lot. Run the same command again; processed messages are skipped thanks to the record. If the warning 'another real run with the same ID is in progress' appears, the lock of the interrupted run is still there; it is treated as invalid after 2 hours.
    • Messages become insan_kontrolu because of an error or 'left the window'
Check the neden (reason) field in the record. An Anthropic credit balance or spend limit error does not go away until it is fixed; check it in the Console. If a Composio error persists, reconnect with baglan.py. Look at these messages in Gmail yourself.
    • An email got no draft and the record says 'draft already exists in this thread'
This is intentional: a draft was already opened in that thread. Check the older draft in Drafts and reply yourself, taking the new email into account.
  6. Step 6 · In the terminal

Do a dry run first: see the results without creating drafts

What for: Check that the classification works without touching Gmail.

You check this step yourself; the system should not move past it without your approval.

    1. Run the command (in this step KULLANICI_KIMLIGI in the Modal secret must be gelen-kutusu-deneme-1). In 'kuru' (dry) mode, messages are read and classified; no drafts are opened in Gmail and nothing is written to the record file. With --sayi 5 only 5 new messages are checked; this is the safe starting point.
    2. In the terminal you first see the structure of the first message in the list ('RAW SAMPLE'), the structure of the first full read ('RAW BODY'), then the ID, class and confidence for each message, and finally the 'Done:' summary. The logs show only field names and lengths (e.g. "snippet": "<str 182>"); message content, subject, the model's reasoning and addresses are not printed. Expected: the question email is cevap_gerekli, the ad-like one is reklam.
    3. The Composio tools page defines the output only as a 'data' field and does not give its inner structure; the code searches for the keys (messages, messageId, threadId, payload) in nested data. If the list has messages but no messageId, RAW SAMPLE is printed in real mode too and a warning is added to the summary. If a key name is different, fix the name in ortak.py based on the raw sample, or ask for support.

    How you know it worked

    • In the terminal, the 'Done:' line shows kip kuru, taslak 0 and hata 0; the okunan (read) and yeni (new) message counts are visible.
    • NO new drafts in the Gmail Drafts folder.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • The line 'WARNING: 0 messages read' appears, but there are new messages in the inbox
The query counts days in UTC and only looks at the Inbox; the message may be in Spam. If the list key in the response is different, check RAW SAMPLE and the ortak.bul calls.
    • A 'failed ... The connection may have dropped' error
Run baglan.py again to reconnect the account; you may have revoked access or changed your password.
    • All messages come out as 'insan', with the reason 'body could not be read'
The body parts are not where expected: fix metin_govdesi in govde.py based on the payload structure in the RAW BODY line.
    • Anthropic authentication or credit balance error
Check the key and the account's usage status in the Console; update the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY value in the secret.
    • The run ends with the error 'Gmail reported results but the list came back empty'
In issue #2187 in the Composio repository, the user reporting the same symptom wrote that the list came through with verbose=false; the issue was later closed on suspicion of a Google client setting. This guide's code already requests the list with verbose=False (ortak.oku). If the symptom persists, reconnect with baglan.py and check the query window; if that does not help, ask for support.
  7. Step 7 · In the terminal

Real run: read the drafts in the test account

What for: Check the draft quality and that nothing is processed twice; the final decision is yours.

You check this step yourself; the system should not move past it without your approval.

    1. Run the command. The first real run also checks only 5 new messages with --sayi 5. In this mode, drafts are opened in the test account for messages found safe. Creating a draft is a visible change in Gmail, but no message is sent; there is no send tool in the code.
    2. Open the Drafts folder in the test account and read the draft. The draft should be inside the same thread. Messages without a draft are recorded as 'insan_kontrolu' or 'atlandi'; download the record file with the second command and check it (--force overwrites a local file with the same name; without --force the command fails in that case).
    3. Run the same command a second time: no new draft should be opened.

    › .venv\Scripts\python.exe -m modal run otomasyon.py --kip gercek --sayi 5

    › .venv/bin/python -m modal volume get --force gelen-eposta-kayit islenenler-gelen-kutusu-deneme-1.json islenenler-gelen-kutusu-deneme-1.json

    How you know it worked

    • New drafts appear in the Drafts folder, inside the relevant thread.
    • On the second run, the 'Done:' line shows taslak 0.
    • The downloaded record file has a status for each message (taslak, atlandi, insan_kontrolu, beklemede), the draft ID if a draft was opened, and the calismalar list at the end.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • The draft was opened as a new thread instead of inside the thread
If threadId is missing, the code opens no draft and marks the message 'insan_kontrolu' (no address/thread). If the draft was still opened as a new thread, according to Composio the given thread_id is invalid or inaccessible; check the threadId value in the RAW SAMPLE and RAW BODY lines.
    • The draft's recipient address is empty or wrong
The sender field may be in a different format than expected; print the gonderen value and fix the address extraction.
    • The record shows the reason 'draft ID could not be read'
The draft was most likely opened, but the ID did not come back under the expected name in the response. Check Gmail Drafts; since the message is locked in the record, no second draft is opened. If you want the ID recorded, fix the 'draft_id' name in ortak.taslak_kimligi based on the key name in the 'RAW DRAFT KEYS' line.
    • The warning 'another real run with the same ID is in progress' appeared and nothing was done
Another real run with the same user ID (e.g. the scheduled morning job) is in progress. Wait for it to finish; the lock of an interrupted run is treated as invalid after 2 hours.
  8. Step 8 · In the terminal

Move to your main mailbox as a separate, deliberate step

What for: After the test goes well, move to real correspondence knowingly, reading the permission again.

You check this step yourself; the system should not move past it without your approval.

    1. Move only if you are happy with the draft quality and the no-duplicate processing in the test account. This step means granting a broad permission on your main inbox: read the consent screen again, carefully. The 'no message is sent' guarantee rests only on the tool filter in the code.
    2. Pick a NEW user ID for the main account (first command) and run baglan.py again; choose the main account. Do not connect a second account with the same ID, or the two connections get mixed up.
    3. Update the KULLANICI_KIMLIGI value in the Modal secret to the same new value. Since the record file is kept separately per ID, the test records do not get mixed in. Then repeat the dry run with this ID, read the output, and only then move to real mode.
    4. The dry run on your main inbox also prints only structure to the log: the logs show only field names and lengths; message content, subject, the model's reasoning and addresses are not printed. The reasoning and error details stay in the record file on the Volume. If your main account has confidential correspondence (health, legal, finance), do not use this system on that inbox, because the email text goes to the model provider.

    macOS · LinuxFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv/bin/python -m modal run otomasyon.py --kip kuru --sayi 5

    How you know it worked

    • baglan.py prints 'Connected' with the new user ID.
    • The dry run classifies the main inbox's messages and opens no drafts.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • The dry run still reads the test inbox
KULLANICI_KIMLIGI in the Modal secret was not updated; check the value.
    • The old connection gets mixed up because of 'two accounts'
Use a separate user ID for each Gmail account; if needed, delete the old connected account in the Composio dashboard.
  9. Step 9 · In the terminal

Turn on the daily run: deploy the app

What for: Have it run on its own every morning, even when your computer is off.

    1. The schedule is already written in otomasyon.py: every day at 08:00, Europe/Istanbul. But the schedule only becomes active once the app is deployed; modal run does not turn it on. The deployed job runs on whichever account KULLANICI_KIMLIGI in the Modal secret points to.
    2. Modal supports a time zone parameter for Cron (IANA name, default UTC). Europe/Istanbul is DijiKoçum's suggestion; the documentation gives another city as its example. After the first morning, check the run time in the Modal dashboard.
    3. On the Starter plan you can have at most 5 deployed crons at a time.
    4. After deployment the job runs on Modal's servers, even if your computer is off. The scheduled run works without the --sayi limit, with at most 20 drafts. If you change the code, redeploy with the same command.
    5. Rule: while the scheduled job is on, run only dry mode by hand; if you need real mode by hand, the code stops a second real run with the lock in the Modal Dict (it prints a warning and exits). A lock older than 2 hours is treated as abandoned and taken over; so do not raise the timeout value in otomasyon.py above 3600, or the lock of a long-running run could be taken over.

    › .venv\Scripts\python.exe -m modal deploy otomasyon.py
    macOS · LinuxFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv/bin/python -m modal deploy otomasyon.py

    How you know it worked

    • The terminal reports that the deployment is complete.
    • gelen-eposta-taslak appears under Apps in the Modal dashboard.
    • The next morning, drafts for new messages appear in the Gmail Drafts folder.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • The run time is different from what I expected
Check the function's schedule in the dashboard and verify the time zone name; if needed, convert the Cron line to UTC time and redeploy (UTC+3 for Istanbul).
    • A code change has no effect the next morning
If you did not run the deploy command again after the change, the old version runs.
  10. Step 10 · In the terminal

Stop, shut down and watch the logs

What for: Be able to turn the automation off whenever you want and see what happened.

    1. There is no temporary pause: the Modal documentation says schedules cannot be paused for now. To turn it off, either remove the cron line from the code and redeploy, or stop the app permanently (command below).
    2. A permanent stop cannot be undone; to turn it back on you have to redeploy from the same files. Before stopping, download a backup of the record file (the modal volume get --force command, file name based on the user ID; --force overwrites a local file with the same name).
    3. Logs: the Apps section of the Modal dashboard or the modal app logs command. On the Starter plan logs are kept for 1 day; track history through the record file.
    4. If you also want to end Gmail access, delete the connected account in the Composio dashboard and revoke access in your Google account; revoking access stops Gmail calls with a 401.
    WindowsFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv\Scripts\python.exe -m modal app logs gelen-eposta-taslak --since 1d

    macOS · LinuxFolder: gelen-eposta-otomasyonu
    › .venv/bin/python -m modal app stop gelen-eposta-taslak

    How you know it worked

    • After stopping, modal app list no longer shows the app as active.
    • No new drafts appear the next morning.
If you get stuck: problems specific to this step
    • The log looks empty
On the Starter plan logs are kept for 1 day; read older runs from the record file.
    • modal app stop cannot find the app name
Check the name with modal app list; the app name is the modal.App name in otomasyon.py.

Is the setup working? Check these

  • In the dry run, two sample messages land in the expected class: the question email as cevap_gerekli, the ad as reklam.
  • In the real run, a draft appears in the Gmail Drafts folder of the test account, inside the relevant thread; no new message lands in the Sent folder.
  • Running the same command a second time opens no new draft, and the islenenler-<user ID>.json file has one entry per message.
  • After you revoke Gmail access, the next run ends with an error and opens no draft; according to the Composio Gmail page, Gmail calls on an account whose access was revoked fail with a 401 error, and reconnecting (baglan.py) fixes it.

What you pay for

The items are separate, not a total; which ones you need depends on the path you set up. Prices change, so check the source of each item.

  • SubscriptionComposio

The Hobby plan is $0, needs no credit card and includes 100,000 tool calls a month; at the cap, usage pauses at no charge. Composio's shared (managed) app includes 20K tool calls a month; overage is an extra $0.0002 on top of the base rate (the table shows the total: $0.0005 per call; Pro base rate $0.0003). One scheduled run makes at most 224 calls: 4 list pages, 1 full read per new or pending message (at most 200) and at most 20 drafts. The daily scheduled job comes to roughly 6,700 calls a month at most. Manual runs add to this (with --sayi 5, a dry run makes at most 9 calls and a real run at most 14), as do other jobs on the same Composio account. (October 18, 2026) source

  • HostingModal (hosting)

The Starter plan has no monthly fee; according to the pricing page it includes $30 of compute (CPU, memory, GPU) a month, and you are billed above that. According to the billing documentation, the account must have a payment method to use Modal. The pricing page suggests setting a workspace budget to cap spending. At most 5 deployed crons, 1-day log retention. (October 18, 2026) source

  • API usageClaude API (model usage)

Billed per token; for Haiku 5.5, pricing starts at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. Usage grows with the number and length of new emails; one call is made per new message. (October 17, 2026) source
