What Is LM Studio? Is It Free, How to Install It, How Much RAM It Needs, Does It Work in Turkish?
You install LM Studio, search for a model on Hugging Face from inside the app and download it; then you talk to that model on your own computer in a ChatGPT-like chat window, and your chats and the documents you add stay on your computer. It is a desktop app for Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon) and Linux; you don't need to write code. The app is free, and since July 8, 2025 it can also be used free at work. Turkish can be selected for the menus; the quality of replies in Turkish depends on the model you choose. The paid plans on the pricing page belong to Bionic, a separate app.

What is LM Studio and what is it for?
Yes. LM Studio itself is an app with a graphical interface: you install it, search for and download a model inside it, and type in the chat box. The official documentation describes the desktop app as the easiest starting point for anyone who wants to start with a graphical interface or is new to running models locally. The command line (lms) and the local server are optional advanced features.
LM Studio is not an AI model but a program that runs models. You first install the app, then pick and download a model from inside it; the model runs on your computer. So unlike ChatGPT or Claude, it isn't a site you log into with an account but an "AI engine" on your own computer.
Who it's for: business owners who don't want to send what they write or client documents to the internet, people who want to try local AI without writing code, and developers who want to connect an AI model to their own software. Who it's not for: people without a powerful computer who don't want to give up cloud services; speed and quality depend on your computer's memory and the model you choose (see the Hardware and Models sections).

How to download and install LM Studio: Windows, macOS, Linux
The official address is lmstudio.ai/download. The page shows Bionic first (a separate app, see the "LM Studio or Bionic?" section); the LM Studio section is below it, and the "Download LM Studio" button picks your operating system. The system requirements below are taken from the official system requirements page.
- Download. On lmstudio.ai/download, download the Windows installer from the LM Studio section and open it. The official documentation doesn't describe the installer steps (admin rights, disk space).
- Requirements. x64 (your processor must support the AVX2 instruction set) or ARM (Snapdragon X Elite). At least 16 GB of RAM and at least 4 GB of dedicated VRAM for the graphics card are recommended.
- First launch. Run the app once; the lms command-line tool ships with the app and can only be used after the app has been run at least once.
- Download. Download it for macOS from lmstudio.ai/download and install it. The official documentation doesn't describe the steps.
- Requirements. An Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) processor and macOS 14.0 or newer. Intel-based Macs are currently not supported. 16 GB of RAM or more is recommended; it can also be used on an 8 GB Mac, but you need to pick a small model and a short context.
- MLX. On Apple Silicon, models run with llama.cpp (GGUF) or Apple's MLX engine.
- Download. The Linux version is distributed as an AppImage: download it from lmstudio.ai/download and make it executable.
- Requirements. x64 or ARM64 (aarch64), Ubuntu 20.04 or newer. Versions newer than Ubuntu 22 are not well tested. AVX2 support comes built in on x64.
llmster is the interface-less version of LM Studio: for servers, headless GPU machines or CI environments. You don't need to install the app.
› curl -fsSL https://lmstudio.ai/install.sh | bash› irm https://lmstudio.ai/install.ps1 | iex› lms daemon upNo account is needed for local use; you install it and use it. Sign-in is only required for features that link devices, such as LM Link. The official documents (App Terms, Privacy Policy) don't say whether there is an age limit or phone verification when creating an account.
Current version: 0.4.26 (October 13, 2026). When the app opens, it checks for updates and shows a notification; macOS and Windows have an in-app updater.
Command line: lms ships with the app; there is no extra installation step. The commands below are from the official documentation:
› lms get openai/gpt-oss-20b
lms load openai/gpt-oss-20b
lms server start› lms chat
lms ls
lms ps
lms log streamSources: lmstudio.ai/download, docs/app/system-requirements, docs/app/basics/lmstudio-vs-llmster-vs-lms, docs/cli, docs/developer/core/headless, changelog (October 14, 2026). An older copy of the documentation (llms.txt) says macOS 13.4; the current system requirements page is used here.
How much RAM and which graphics card does LM Studio need?
The official page says language models use a lot of memory. The table below shows recommended values, not minimums.
| System | Processor / graphics card | RAM / VRAM | Software |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | x64: AVX2 required · ARM: Snapdragon X Elite | 16 GB RAM recommended · at least 4 GB dedicated VRAM recommended | Windows (no version requirement stated) |
| macOS | Apple Silicon only (M1-M4); Intel Macs not supported | 16 GB or more recommended · 8 GB possible, but small models | macOS 14.0 or newer |
| Linux | x64 or ARM64; AVX2 built in on x64 | Not stated on the official page | Ubuntu 20.04 or newer, AppImage |
The official documentation gives no general RAM table by model size. On model pages, the letter B means billion parameters; a bigger number needs more memory. Size-reduced copies (such as Q4) take less space but lose some quality.
As the context (the model's working memory) grows, more memory is needed. When connecting tools such as Claude Code, the official documentation recommends a context length above 25K tokens.
The official documentation doesn't give a disk size; models can range from a few GB to hundreds of GB. Models download by default into .lmstudio/models in your user folder; you can choose another folder from the My Models tab.
The app's runtimes (LM Runtimes) are packaged separately and managed with Cmd Shift R on Mac and Ctrl Shift R on Windows and Linux. For graphics card details, see LM Studio's GPU documentation and bug tracker.
If your computer is weak, pick a small model and keep the context short. The Models section gives examples of the sizes shown in the catalog.
Sources: docs/app/system-requirements, docs/app/basics/download-model, docs/integrations/claude-code (October 14, 2026). The older info on the atlas card says macOS 13.4; the current page says 14.0.
How to use LM Studio
- Open LM Studio. Go to the Discover tab to search for models (Cmd 2 on Mac, Ctrl 2 on Windows and Linux).
- Type a model name or paste a Hugging Face URL into the search box; pick a model and download it. In the download options, names starting with Q (such as Q4, Q8) are size-reduced copies of the same model; the official recommendation is to choose 4-bit or higher if your computer can handle it.
- Load the model and type in the chat box in English or Turkish. Cmd/Ctrl N for a new chat, Cmd/Ctrl Shift N for a folder; you can drag chats into folders and open two chats side by side.
- To add a document, attach a docx, pdf or txt file to the chat. If the document is short, all of it is given to the model; if it is very long, LM Studio picks the relevant parts (RAG), which sometimes needs tuning.
For better results with long documents, include in your question the terms and ideas you expect to appear in the document: the official documentation says this improves the chances of finding the relevant parts.
If you always want to give the same instruction, you save the system prompt and settings as a preset; then you pick it with one click. Presets are JSON files and can be imported from a file or a link.
The default "User" mode shows only the chat interface and sets everything automatically; this is what's recommended for beginners. If you want to change loading and inference settings by hand, turn on Developer mode under Settings then Developer.
!Local models also make mistakes and can make things up. Check numbers, dates and quotes against their source; quality can drop noticeably, especially with small models.
Sources: docs/app/basics/download-model, chat, rag; docs/app/presets; docs/app/user-interface/modes (October 14, 2026). Reported by users On Ekşi Sözlük, a user who tested small models with the same question showed that all of them sometimes got a TV series' year and cast wrong; this is a single test by that user.
Where LM Studio is used: app, server, command line, LM Link
LM Studio can be used in four ways. For most people, the first is enough.
Detail: the app, the server and lms use the same core. lms manages both the desktop app and llmster; when the app is closed, the lms command starts the app itself.
Using LM Studio's API, MCP and Claude Code
LM Studio can turn a model into a local server: switch on "Start server" in the Developer tab or type lms server start in the terminal. By default the server listens at localhost:1234.
› export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=http://localhost:1234
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=lmstudio
claude --model openai/gpt-oss-20b- Cost: Free with a local model.
- Context: tools such as Claude Code use a lot of context; the official documentation recommends a context length above 25K tokens.
- MCP: LM Studio has been an MCP client since 0.3.17. You add servers in the Program tab via Install › Edit mcp.json or with the "Add to LM Studio" button on websites. LM Studio follows Cursor's mcp.json format.
- Use from another device: with LM Link you can use a model on a powerful computer from a laptop or phone; the connection is end-to-end encrypted with Tailscale and your devices are not exposed to the open internet.
!MCP servers can run code that accesses your files and network. Don't install an MCP server from a source you don't trust. Some MCP servers are designed for cloud assistants, so they can use a lot of tokens and overflow the local model's context.
!If you open the server to the network (Serve on Local Network or lms server start --bind 0.0.0.0), other devices on your network can connect too. Authentication is off by default; if you open it up, turn on the setting that requires an API token on the Developer page. The official documentation recommends authentication in this case.
Using it in your own software: in an OpenAI or Anthropic client, just point the address to the local server (http://localhost:1234). LM Studio also has its own REST API, a Python SDK (lmstudio-python) and a TypeScript SDK (lmstudio-js). Details are in the official developer documentation.
Sources: docs/developer/core/server, serve-on-network, authentication, openai-compat, anthropic-compat, integrations/claude-code, docs/app/mcp, docs/lmlink (October 14, 2026). On Hacker News, the threads "MCP in LM Studio" and "Running Gemma 4 locally with LM Studio's new headless CLI and Claude Code" drew many comments; these are user comments.
Which models does LM Studio have? How to download them and which to choose
LM Studio has no model of its own: it searches for, downloads and runs open models from Hugging Face. The Discover tab in the app and the lmstudio.ai/models catalog split models into two groups: downloadable (runs on your computer) and available on LM Studio Cloud (models running in the cloud; the Bionic documentation describes cloud models as LM Studio Secure Cloud and they require an account and credits). The list below is a few examples shown in the catalog.
| Model | What it's for, per the catalog description | Sizes |
|---|---|---|
| gpt-oss | OpenAI's first open model; adjustable reasoning, trained for tool use; Apache 2.0 license | 20B · 120B |
| Gemma 4 | Google's open model family; image input; various sizes for on-device use | 5.1B · 7.9B · 12B · 26B · 31B |
| Qwen3.8 | Vision and language model; code, business and research; adjustable reasoning; 262K context | 27B |
| Granite 4.1 | Improved for tool calling, instruction following and chat | 3B · 8B · 30B |
| Muse Glimmer | Meta's 30B open model for local agent workflows; tool use and image understanding | 30B |
- On a weak computer or one with close to 8 GB of memory: the smallest sizes (3B-8B) and a short context
- Mid-range computer (16 GB of memory): the small and medium sizes in the catalog; test with your own document
- Powerful graphics card or a Mac with lots of memory: 20B-30B and larger sizes
- If you will feed it images, the model description must mention image input
- If you need a large model that fits none of these: LM Studio Cloud (Bionic) or another cloud service
Two model file formats. GGUF runs with the llama.cpp engine and works on all three operating systems. MLX is Apple's engine and runs only on Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 14.0 or later for MLX models). In the terminal, you search by format with lms get --mlx or lms get --gguf.
LM Studio doesn't say which model is good at Turkish; that depends on the model provider's page. If Turkish matters, test the model you choose with your own text.
You can import a GGUF file you downloaded outside the app with the lms import command (experimental). Expected folder structure: inside the models folder, the publisher; inside that, the model; inside that, the file.
The catalog is updated often; this section was checked on October 14, 2026. See the current list in the Discover tab or at lmstudio.ai/models.
!Each model comes with its own license. If you'll use a model for business, read its license on the publisher's page (see the Commercial use section).

Is LM Studio free? Can it be used at work, and what does it cost?
The LM Studio app is free. An announcement published on July 8, 2025 says "LM Studio is free to use both at home and at work"; a separate commercial license used to be required for the workplace, and that requirement is gone. The App Terms currently in force (August 23, 2026) grant the license for "personal and/or internal business purposes" (see the Commercial use section).
The lmstudio.ai/pricing page is the Bionic pricing page. Bionic is a new app separate from LM Studio (covered in the next section). There is no paid plan on this page for the LM Studio app itself.

LM Studio or LM Studio Bionic? They're not the same thing
LM Studio Bionic is a separate app released by the LM Studio team; it is not a new version or a renamed LM Studio. The official documentation: "Bionic is a new, separate app from LM Studio." The two can be installed side by side.
| LM Studio | Bionic | |
|---|---|---|
| What | A chat and server app that runs local models | An AI agent that works with open models: code, research, documents and file tasks |
| Where models run | On your computer | On your computer, on another device via LM Link, or in LM Studio Secure Cloud |
| Price | $0 | Free $0 · Bionic+ $20/month · Pro $100/month |
| Account | Not required | Required for cloud models; not required for local models |
- On the download page, Bionic appears first with LM Studio below it; the "Download LM Studio" button is in the lower section.
- When LM Studio is running, Bionic can use it for local model inference (LM Studio 0.4.26 and Bionic 1.1.8 and later).
- With cloud models, data is processed temporarily on US-hosted services under zero data retention (ZDR) terms; this does not apply to local use of the LM Studio app.
Sources: docs/bionic, bionic/models, bionic/accounts-plans-and-billing, lmstudio.ai/pricing, lmstudio.ai/download, changelog (October 14, 2026). Reported by users In a Reddit r/LocalLLaMA thread, users complain about Bionic being featured on the download page; one user wrote that they thought Bionic was an LM Studio update and installed the wrong app. These views are user reports.
Is LM Studio available in Turkish, and does it reply in Turkish?
| Turkish interfaceCommunity translation | The documentation page lists Turkish among the supported interface languages; the translation is done by community members. To select it: Settings then Preferences then Language. The official documentation doesn't say whether the translation covers every screen. |
|---|---|
| Replies in TurkishUnclear | The reply language depends on the model you choose; LM Studio itself doesn't state it. Model pages often don't name Turkish separately either. Test with your own text. |
| Voice dictation and spoken repliesUnclear | The official documentation doesn't describe voice input or output in the LM Studio app. Offline speech transcription appears on Bionic's pricing page; that's a separate app. |
| Turkish documentation and supportUnclear | The documentation (lmstudio.ai/docs) is in English. The official sources show no Turkish documentation or Turkish support channel. There is a Discord for the community. |
If the reply comes back in the wrong language, add "Reply in Turkish" to the start of your request. Turkish can be noticeably weaker in small models; if you run into problems, try a bigger model.
!To change the interface language you need to open the Settings page. The official documentation says Power User or Developer mode must be on to open this page; the two pages name it differently (Developer mode is the merger of the old Developer and Power User modes).
Sources: docs/app/user-interface/languages, modes (October 14, 2026). Reported by users On Ekşi Sözlük, a user also tried a small model fine-tuned for Turkish; this is one person's experience, not an evaluation.
Is LM Studio safe? Where does my data stay?
Privacy Policy (June 2026): if you run models locally, your messages, chat histories and documents are not sent outside your system; everything is stored on your device. Offline documents are the same: if you drag and drop a document into LM Studio, it is processed on your computer.
Model search and download (for example huggingface.co), runtime downloads and update checks need a network. During an update check the app version, operating system and IP address reach the company, and during model search anonymous search queries do; the official policy says these are not linked to personal identity and user behavior is not tracked.
The Privacy Policy says the app contains no telemetry or user-specific tracking.
Chats are stored as JSON files in the ~/.lmstudio/conversations folder (%USERPROFILE%\.lmstudio\conversations on Windows). Editing them by hand isn't recommended. The model doesn't learn from chats; it only knows what is in the chat or the system prompt.
By default the local server is reachable only from this computer. Opening it to the network or enabling CORS carries a security risk; the official documentation recommends authentication (API token).
Some MCP servers can run arbitrary code, access your local files and use your network connection. Install them only from sources you trust.
LM Studio's privacy and the behavior of the model you download are separate: check who published the model. The app terms leave compliance with third-party model licenses to you.
!This page is not a security certification. If you'll work with client or patient data, run models locally and don't open the server to the network; for personal data law (in Turkey, KVKK, the Personal Data Protection Law), consult a qualified professional. This is not legal advice.
Sources: lmstudio.ai/privacy (June 2026), docs/app/offline, docs/app/basics/chat, docs/app/mcp, docs/developer/core/server/serve-on-network (October 14, 2026). The policy's cloud features clause applies to Bionic and cloud models (cloud prompts are processed temporarily and not stored).
Are LM Studio and the models I run suitable for commercial use?
There are two separate licenses: the program's (LM Studio) and the model's. The program's license is in the App Terms; each model has its own separate license, stated on the model page or by the publisher.
- Using LM Studio at work: the App Terms grant the license for "personal and/or internal business purposes", and no separate commercial license form is needed (July 8, 2025 announcement)
- Your chat and document content stays yours: under the terms, you own the content rights
- There is an Enterprise plan for companies that need enterprise features (SSO, model and MCP restrictions); pricing is through sales
- Distributing, selling or renting the program to third parties or offering it as a service (SaaS)
- Modifying the program, reverse engineering it or removing copyright notices
- Assuming you can use every model commercially: complying with third-party model licenses is on you
- Under the App Terms the program is closed source; the lms command-line tool is MIT-licensed (official CLI page), and the SDKs are MIT-licensed (catalog entry).
- Model licenses differ: for example, the catalog lists Apache 2.0 for gpt-oss. Read the license of other models on their own model page.
- You need to check the accuracy of any content you publish yourself.

Common LM Studio problems and fixes
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| The Settings page doesn't appear | User mode shows only the chat interface. Turn on Developer mode under Settings then Developer (the merger of what used to be the Power User and Developer modes). |
| I can't find LM Studio on the download page | On lmstudio.ai/download, Bionic comes first, with the LM Studio section below: use the "Download LM Studio" button there. |
| Model search and download don't work | Model search, catalog details and runtime downloads need the internet (requests go to Hugging Face). Offline, only chatting with already downloaded models works. |
| I can't connect to the server from another device | You need Serve on Local Network in the Developer tab or lms server start --bind 0.0.0.0; turn on authentication too. |
| A web app can't connect to the server | Enable CORS support with lms server start --cors. The official documentation says this carries a security risk. |
| A long document or tool overflows the context | Choose a larger context length (needs more memory) and include terms from the document in your question. For tools such as Claude Code, a context above 25K tokens is recommended. |
| My graphics card isn't detected | The official documentation has no troubleshooting page on this. Reported by users On Reddit there are threads about Radeon (ROCm), new NVIDIA cards and server cards not being detected. Check your driver and LM Runtimes version; if the problem persists, report it on the official bug tracker (github.com/lmstudio-ai/lmstudio-bug-tracker). |
Sources: docs/app/user-interface/modes, docs/app/offline, docs/developer/core/server/serve-on-network, docs/cli/serve/server-start, docs/integrations/claude-code (October 14, 2026). Reported by users On Reddit, some users write that the app became unstable after updates; this is a user report.
How to uninstall LM Studio, and where are chats and models?
- Chats: ~/.lmstudio/conversations (%USERPROFILE%\.lmstudio\conversations on Windows). You can also right-click a chat in the app to see its file location.
- Models: ~/.lmstudio/models by default; you can change the folder from the My Models tab.
- Presets: ~/.lmstudio/config-presets (%USERPROFILE%\.lmstudio\config-presets on Windows).
The official documentation doesn't list uninstall steps. Use your operating system's way of uninstalling apps; the .lmstudio folder above may not be deleted automatically, and your models stay there too. Back up any chats and settings you need before deleting.
The LM Studio app has no paid plan. For Bionic+ and Pro subscriptions, per the App Terms: you can cancel at any time, the cancellation takes effect at the end of the period, and fees are not refunded unless required by law. The official pages don't make clear how to delete an account.
LM Studio or Ollama? LM Studio or ChatGPT?
Reported by users On Reddit, r/LocalLLaMA and r/LocalLLM users distinguish the two like this: LM Studio is the "full package" (interface, model discovery, settings), while Ollama is an engine that runs in the background like a server and connects to other interfaces. Some criticize LM Studio for not being open source, others Ollama's naming; these views are user reports. The rows for other tools are summaries from those tools' own guides.
Frequently asked questions
What is LM Studio and what is it for?
LM Studio is a desktop app with a chat interface that runs AI language models on your own computer. You search for and download a model from inside the app, chat with it and add documents. It is available for Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon) and Linux.
How do you download and install LM Studio?
On lmstudio.ai/download, pick your operating system in the LM Studio section and download it. The page shows Bionic, a separate app, first; LM Studio is below it. Windows needs an AVX2-capable processor, macOS needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14.0 or later, and Linux needs Ubuntu 20.04 or later.
Is LM Studio available in Turkish, and does it reply in Turkish?
The documentation lists Turkish among the supported interface languages (Settings > Preferences > Language). The quality of replies in Turkish depends not on LM Studio but on the model you choose; the official documentation doesn't cover this, so test with your own text.
Is LM Studio free, and can it be used at work?
Yes. The app is free, and since July 8, 2025 it can also be used free at work; the App Terms allow personal and internal business use. The $20 and $100 plans on the pricing page belong to Bionic, a separate app.
LM Studio or Ollama?
Both run models on your computer. LM Studio is a free app (closed source) with a graphical interface, model search and a chat window; Ollama comes as a free, open-source (MIT) command line and desktop app. Details in the Ollama guide.
Which model should you use in LM Studio, and how do you download it?
In the Discover tab, search for the model name or Hugging Face URL and download it. The same model has size-reduced copies starting with Q; 4-bit or higher is recommended if your computer can handle it. The catalog includes models such as gpt-oss, Gemma 4, Qwen3.8 and Granite 4.1.
How much RAM does LM Studio need?
The official page recommends 16 GB of RAM for Windows and macOS. It can be used with small models on an 8 GB Mac. At least 4 GB of dedicated VRAM is recommended on Windows and Apple Silicon (M1-M4) on Mac; Intel Macs are not supported.
How do you use LM Studio's API and MCP?
You turn on the server in the Developer tab or type lms server start; the server offers OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible endpoints at localhost:1234. You add MCP servers with the mcp.json file. Don't install MCP from a source you don't trust.
Are LM Studio and LM Studio Bionic the same?
No. Bionic is a separate app released by the LM Studio team: an AI agent that works with open models. Bionic has a free plan and $20 and $100 plans; the LM Studio app is free.
Is LM Studio safe, and where does my data go?
When you run models locally, your messages, chats and documents don't leave your device. Model search, downloads and update checks need the internet, and device information and anonymous search queries go to the company; the policy says there is no telemetry. If you open the server to the network, turn on authentication.
LM Studio doesn't see my graphics card. What should I do?
The official documentation has no separate troubleshooting page on this. Check your driver and LM Runtimes version; if the problem persists, report it on the official bug tracker. Forums have similar complaints about Radeon, new NVIDIA and server cards.
How do you uninstall LM Studio, and where are the models?
The official documentation doesn't list uninstall steps; use your operating system's way of uninstalling apps. Models are in .lmstudio/models in your user folder by default, and chats are stored as JSON files in the .lmstudio/conversations folder.
