What is DeepSeek? Is it free, is it safe, does it work in Turkish, and how much does the API cost?
You type questions into DeepSeek and upload files; it writes text and code, extracts text from files, searches the web and works through hard questions step by step with DeepThink. The web and mobile apps are free, ad-free and have no in-app purchases; the API and the model usage of the desktop Harness are pay-as-you-go in US dollars. The app offers a Turkish language option (App Store Turkey). It is a product of Hangzhou DeepSeek, a company based in China; according to its privacy policy, data is collected and stored in China, so don't enter customer, student or patient data.

What is DeepSeek for?
DeepSeek is a product not of a software company but of an AI lab: Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. It answers the questions you type into the chat screen; it writes text and code, extracts text from files you upload, searches the web and thinks step by step before answering a hard question (DeepThink).
The same company runs three things that are easy to confuse. The chat app (web, iPhone, Android) is free. The API (for connecting to software) is pay-as-you-go. The open-weight models and DeepSeek Harness are options you download and use, with free software. For most people the chat app alone is enough.
The official terms list the output types as text, tables and code; generating photos or drawings is not on that list. Users also report that it doesn't generate images.
Who it helps: students, content creators, developers and small business owners who want a fast, simple, free chat. Who it doesn't suit: anyone who will work with customer, patient or employee data: the data is processed in China (see the Data section).
How do you download DeepSeek and create an account?
Chat needs no installation: you can use it in the browser. The mobile app works with the same account and chat history syncs across devices.
- Open chat.deepseek.com. The "DeepSeek Web" link on the official site goes to this address. The address must be on the deepseek.com domain; fake sign-in pages are circulating, see Common problems.
- Choose your account. According to the official announcement, you sign in with email, Google or Apple. A verification code is requested by SMS or email during sign-in.
- You have to create an account. The Terms of Use require you to register with email or a third-party account before using the service. The official sources don't mention any extra requirement for Turkey (ID, a separate phone number).
- If you are under 18 The terms say the service is mainly intended for adults, and that minors should read the terms with a guardian and use the service with their permission.
- First setting: privacy. If you don't want your chats used to improve the service, the terms say to turn off the "Improve the model for everyone" toggle. The official sources don't say which menu holds the toggle; look in the settings.
- iPhone: "DeepSeek - AI Assistant" on the App Store (developer: Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence). Free on App Store Turkey, iOS 15 or later, 80.1 MB; on October 8, 2026 the store page showed version 2.6.2 and an age rating of 13+.
- Android: The Android link on the official download page goes straight to an APK file. Check the price and age rating in the store on the Google Play page.
- Sign in with the same account. Chat history syncs between the two devices; if it doesn't sync, refresh the page on the web, and pull down the history bar in the app to refresh.
!The official announcement says "download only from official channels". In the store, check that the developer name is Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence; for fake sign-in pages and fake apps, see Common problems.
You don't need to install a program on your computer to chat; a browser is enough. The desktop app on the official download page is not a chat app but an agent app called DeepSeek Harness (details: DeepSeek Harness section).
- Download the macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later) or Windows (64-bit) version from deepseek.com/en/download.
- Open the app, enter your DeepSeek API key under Settings then Models and choose a working folder.
› npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web- Create an account at platform.deepseek.com, create an API key and top up your balance.
- Base URL: https://api.deepseek.com (OpenAI format) or https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic (Anthropic format). Model name: deepseek-flash or deepseek-v4-pro.
The commands for using it with Claude Code are in the "Using DeepSeek in Claude Code and other tools" section.
How do you use DeepSeek?
- Open chat.deepseek.com or the app and sign in.
- Type what you want. Attach a document or photo if you have one; the help page says there are limits on file format, number and size but gives no figures.
- For a hard calculation, logic or planning question, turn on DeepThink; if you need current information, turn on Search (separate section below).
- Read the answer and ask a follow-up. If you edit an earlier message in the same chat, the alternative answers are saved as "branches"; you switch between them with the arrows and numbers.
!DeepSeek can make mistakes. The official terms say the output may contain errors and should not be treated as medical, legal or financial advice. Check figures, dates and quotes against their source. Reported by users One user noticed that the rulings of Turkey's Court of Cassation cited in a legal article were not real; always verify case numbers.
What do the DeepThink and Search buttons do?
The DeepSeek chat box has two buttons: DeepThink and Search. Both are free. The official announcement says "web search and Deep-Think mode"; knowing which one a question needs makes a noticeable difference to the result.
- When to use DeepThink? For work that needs step-by-step thinking, such as hard calculations, logic puzzles, planning and debugging code. According to the API documentation, in thinking mode the model produces a chain of reasoning before giving the final answer. The answer may take longer to start.
- When to use Search? For topics that change after the model's knowledge cutoff, such as current information, news, prices and regulations. Search uses a third-party search API, and the keywords in your input are sent to that service (Privacy Policy). With Search on, accuracy may improve somewhat, but false information can't be ruled out entirely (Terms of Use 5.2).
If you are going to search for something personal (a customer name, phone number, address), don't turn on Search: the keywords go to an outside search service.
Button names are from the official home page ("DeepThink", "Search"). How thinking mode works is described in DeepSeek's API documentation; the detailed behavior on the chat screen is not stated in official sources.
Where is DeepSeek used: chat, Harness, API, open models
There are four separate places under the DeepSeek name. Which one you use depends on the job; for most people the first is enough.
They don't replace each other: chat runs on DeepSeek's servers and the data goes to China; if you run an open-weight model on your own hardware, the data stays on your machine (but that means a much bigger setup and more hardware).
What is DeepSeek Harness? The desktop agent app
DeepSeek Harness is DeepSeek's open-source agent app, currently in preview. It isn't question-and-answer like the chat app; it works in a folder on your computer, reads and edits files, runs commands and carries out long jobs in the background. Everything is designed as a "plugin"; you add the plugins you want or have it write a new plugin through chat.
- Where: desktop app for macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later) and Windows (64-bit); also a web interface via Node.js with the
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh webcommand. - License and cost: the software is open source (MIT) and free. To use the DeepSeek model you enter a DeepSeek API key under Settings then Models; usage is billed at API prices. Another provider or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint can also be connected. The official page doesn't say whether Harness includes any free model allowance of its own.
- Status: preview; core plugins and APIs are changing. Back up your files before using it for production work.
!Harness is an agent: it can write to your files and run commands. Don't open important folders directly; work in a test folder first and read the approval requests.
Using DeepSeek in Claude Code and other tools
The DeepSeek API speaks the OpenAI and Anthropic formats. That means it can be plugged into coding agent tools as the backend model: you switch the model to DeepSeek without changing the tool itself. DeepSeek has published official guides for these tools:
Claude Code as an example (commands from the official guide, macOS and Linux; on Windows the same variables are written with $env:):
› export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=<your DeepSeek API key>
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=deepseek-flash[1m]
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL=deepseek-flash[1m]
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL=deepseek-flash[1m]
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL=deepseek-flash
export CLAUDE_CODE_SUBAGENT_MODEL=deepseek-flash
export CLAUDE_CODE_EFFORT_LEVEL=max
export CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_COMPACT_WINDOW=786432- After setting these variables, go to your project folder and type
claude. - If Claude Code isn't installed, the official guide gives the command
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-codewith Node.js 18+; on Windows you also need Git for Windows.
- Cost: Usage is billed at DeepSeek API prices and is not included in a Claude subscription. If web search is used in Claude Code, the extra model request for summarizing is also billed (official guide).
- Model mapping: Claude Code or Claude Desktop names are translated to DeepSeek names: "claude-opus" names go to deepseek-v4-pro (at V4 Pro prices), "claude-haiku" and "claude-sonnet" names go to deepseek-flash.
!Your API key is like a password: don't write it into code, a browser or a file you share. If it leaks, revoke the key immediately and create a new one, as the DeepSeek help page describes.
Can I run DeepSeek on my own computer?
Yes: the web and mobile apps work without installation. Running it locally is only necessary if you never want your data to leave your machine or if you are going to use the model in your own project.
You can download the weights of DeepSeek models from Hugging Face and run them on your own hardware; DeepSeek releases them under the MIT license. The software is free, but the server/hardware cost and updates are on you.
- The newest model (V4.1-Flash) has 552 billion parameters. For large-scale deployment, DeepSeek gives the example of "a cluster of 2,000 GPUs and storage"; it won't fit on an ordinary computer. The official model card doesn't list hardware requirements for an ordinary computer.
- Small "distilled" models: the R1 model card lists six small models derived from DeepSeek-R1, ranging from 1.5 billion to 70 billion parameters. These are separate models based on Qwen and Llama; they are not the same as the DeepSeek in the app. Reported by users Users report that answers get weaker with a small local model and that Chinese characters sometimes slip in.
- Data: the Privacy Policy applies only to DeepSeek's own apps and services; it excludes apps written by other developers. If you run the model on your own computer, the data doesn't go to DeepSeek's servers; if you run it through another provider, that provider's rules apply.
Setting up the programs used to run models on your own computer is covered in separate guides:
Sources: Hugging Face model cards (V4.1-Flash, R1), DeepSeek V4.1-Flash announcement (September 10, 2026). Hardware requirements are not in the official sources; check which model fits your computer in the relevant program's guide and on the model page.
Which model? V4.1 Flash, V4 Pro and how the older models differ
DeepSeek has several models and their names change often. In the chat app you usually don't pick the model yourself; model choice mainly matters for the API, Harness and open-weight use. The table below is based on DeepSeek's own descriptions.
| Model | What it is for, according to DeepSeek | Speed | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| V4.1-Flash (deepseek-flash, September 10, 2026) | The smallest in the new architecture family; text, agent work and image understanding; according to DeepSeek, stronger, faster and cheaper than V4 Pro | Fast | API, open-weight (MIT); unclear in the app |
| V4-Pro (deepseek-v4-pro, August 13, 2026) | Large model with 1.6 trillion parameters; no image understanding | Slower than V4.1-Flash (according to DeepSeek's tests) | API, open-weight (MIT); launched in the app/web as "Expert Mode" on August 13 |
| V4-Flash (older, April 2026) | Retired; the deepseek-v4-flash name is temporarily redirected to V4.1-Flash | Not stated in official sources | Name redirect only |
| R1 and V3.x (older, 2025) | The reasoning model (R1) that introduced DeepSeek to the world in January 2025, and V3.2; open-weight | Not stated in official sources | On your own hardware; the deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner names in the API were scheduled to shut down on July 24, 2026 |
- In chat: use whatever is on the screen; which model is running is not clear in official sources
- For most API work: deepseek-flash (the strongest and cheapest option, according to DeepSeek)
- API work where it reads images or screenshots: deepseek-flash (V4 Pro doesn't understand images)
- Guides written with the old names (deepseek-chat, deepseek-reasoner) may no longer work
On August 13, 2026 DeepSeek wrote that V4 Pro had launched in the app and on the web as "Expert Mode". No official announcement about the modes in the app appears after September 10; the chat box on the official home page shows only the DeepThink and Search buttons. Reported by users In mid-September some users reported that the modes had merged into a single screen and that V4.1 Flash was running; the official page doesn't confirm this.
In the API, thinking mode is on by default and its level is set as low, high, max: DeepSeek recommends low for simple work, high for everyday agent work and max for complex work. Thinking can also be turned off. In the chat app, the DeepThink button covers this setting.
Both current models have a 1 million token context window and a maximum output of 384 thousand tokens. DeepSeek wrote that 1 million context is the default across all official services; the actual limit on the chat screen and the file size limit are not stated. If the answer comes back incomplete for a very long document, split the document into sections.
In the API, V4 Pro costs more than V4.1 Flash (figures in the Pricing section). In the chat app, the model choice doesn't change the price; chat is free.
Two official pages describe the future of the V4 Pro API differently: the September 10 news page says V4 Pro requests will be redirected to V4.1 Flash from September 14; the same site's changelog says the V4 Pro API service will continue, and the pricing page still lists V4 Pro. This section was checked on October 14, 2026 (sources: DeepSeek API pricing page, changelog, announcements of April 24, August 13 and September 10, 2026, Hugging Face model cards); model versions change often.
Is DeepSeek free? How much does the API cost?
Chat is free: the web and mobile apps, including DeepThink, Search and file uploads. The official announcement says "no ads, no in-app purchases"; the App Store Turkey page also shows it as free and lists no in-app purchases for DeepSeek. There is no monthly subscription plan on the official pricing page. The only paid thing is the API.
- Questions and answers, text and code
- DeepThink and Search
- File uploads
- No ads, no in-app purchases
- Output: $0.60–1.20 / 1 million tokens
- Image understanding included
- 1 million context, thinking mode
- No fixed monthly package
- Output: $1.98–3.96 / 1 million tokens
- 1 million context, thinking mode
- No image understanding
View as a table (API prices, per 1 million tokens)
| Item | Off-peak | Peak |
|---|---|---|
| deepseek-flash · input (cache hit) | $0.003 | $0.006 |
| deepseek-flash · input (cache miss) | $0.15 | $0.30 |

| deepseek-v4-pro · input (cache miss) | $0.66 | $1.32 |
| deepseek-v4-pro · output | $1.98 | $3.96 |
The DeepSeek API has two prices: at peak hours the price is double, at other hours it is half that. Peak hours are 01:00–04:00 and 06:00–10:00 UTC on weekdays (excluding Chinese public holidays). In Turkey, which is on UTC+3, that is 04:00–07:00 and 09:00–13:00. Weekends and all other hours are entirely off-peak. If you have a batch job that can wait, leave it for the night or evening.
- You top up a balance first; the amount goes down as you use it, and any gift balance is spent first. Topped-up balance doesn't expire.
- The official FAQ lists PayPal, bank card, Alipay and WeChat Pay as top-up methods. The official sources don't say which of these are accepted from Turkey or whether VAT/tax applies; go by the amount you see on the payment screen.
- Unused balance can be refunded via Billing › Refunds; invoices are available under Billing › Invoices.
- Prices are in US dollars. No other currency is published; convert at the day's exchange rate yourself.
The official sources don't state a daily message or length limit for chat; the help page says file uploads have size and number limits but gives no figures. Reported by users In June 2026 one user wrote "I haven't hit a limit so far". If you see a limit, go by the warning on the screen.
Prices were checked on October 14, 2026 (api-docs.deepseek.com › Models & Pricing). DeepSeek reserves the right to change prices.

Does DeepSeek support Turkish?
| Answers in TurkishUnclear | The official sources don't describe the quality of Turkish answers. Reported by users Users report that they get Turkish answers when they write in Turkish, but that sometimes the answer or the thinking part drifts into English/Chinese. |
|---|---|
| Mobile app menuYes | The App Store Turkey page lists Turkish among the app's languages (one of 72 languages). |
| Web menuUnclear | The official sources don't say whether the web interface has a Turkish menu. Try changing the language in the settings or via your browser language. |
| Voice dictation (voice input)Unclear | The privacy policy mentions voice input and the App Store privacy label lists "Audio Data"; the official sources don't say whether Turkish speech works. |
| Spoken answers (read aloud)Unclear | The official sources don't mention a spoken-answer feature. |
If the answer comes back in the wrong language, add "answer in Turkish" to your message or regenerate the answer.
What happens to what I type into DeepSeek? Is the data in China, KVKK, training, deletion
Privacy Policy (last updated February 10, 2026): the service is provided by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd. in China, and it collects, processes and stores your personal data directly in China. It says appropriate safeguards will be used where needed.
- Account: date of birth, username, email or phone number, password
- What you type: text, audio, prompts, files and photos you upload, feedback, chat history
- Device and network information, approximate location from your IP address, usage logs
- If you sign in with Google/Apple, the access token from that service
The policy says your inputs may be used to improve the service and train models; you have the right to object (privacy@deepseek.com). Terms of Use 4.3: inputs and outputs may be used "to a minimal extent" after encryption and de-identification; you can opt out by turning off the "Improve the model for everyone" toggle. The toggle's location in the menu is not stated in official sources.
If you use Search, the keywords in your input are shared with the third parties that provide the search service.
Service providers, companies in the DeepSeek group, law enforcement and legal requests, and company mergers/sales. The policy says there is no advertising, data selling or profiling.
Data is kept as long as your account is open; it may be kept longer for legal obligations (no period stated). If you delete your account you can't reopen it. To delete a single chat, use the "..." menu on the web or long-press in the app; a deleted chat can't be restored.
DeepSeek says the service is not designed to process sensitive personal data such as health, religion, ethnic origin, biometrics or children's data, and asks you not to enter such data.
The cross-border transfer page of KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law and its authority) said on October 14, 2026 that "no determination has yet been made by the Board" on "countries with adequate protection". Without an adequacy decision, a transfer requires an appropriate safeguard such as standard contractual clauses; DeepSeek's policy doesn't mention the KVKK standard contract. For a business, entering customer or employee data is therefore risky. This is not legal advice.
Anyone with the link can see the chat; if it is posted publicly it can be collected by crawlers. DeepSeek recommends removing personal information before sharing.
The Terms of Use also cover the API; whether API inputs are used for training is not explained separately. The Privacy Policy excludes apps built by other developers on the DeepSeek API.
With Settings then Data then Export data you can export your account information and your full chat history; the download link is valid for 7 days.
Settings then Account settings then Delete Account. Deleting it permanently erases your full chat history, and any API balance is lost. The option may not appear in an old version: update the app.
!Don't paste text that names customers, students, patients or employees into DeepSeek. If you need to work with personal data, mask the data or run the model on your own hardware.
Is DeepSeek banned in Turkey? Which countries and authorities have restricted it?
For Turkey, no official decision or KVKK announcement specific to DeepSeek appears, and the app is live on App Store Turkey. This is not a legal guarantee; the status is based on official sources as of October 14, 2026. In other countries, data protection authorities took these steps in 2025:
| Authority | Date | What it did |
|---|---|---|
| Italy · data protection authority (Garante) | January 30, 2025 | Ordered the two companies operating DeepSeek to permanently limit processing the data of people in Italy. The reasons include storing data in China and a lack of transparency notices. |
| South Korea · Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) | February 17, 2025 | Following the commission's recommendation, DeepSeek removed its app from the Apple App Store and Google Play on February 15, 2025; existing users could keep using it. The commission advised not to enter personal information into the chatbot until the review was complete. |
| Germany · Berlin data protection authority | June 27, 2025 | Reported the DeepSeek apps to Apple and Google as "illegal content" (transfer of data to China). According to the authority's 2025 annual report, Apple and Google declined to block them. |
| Turkey · KVKK | October 14, 2026 | The official sources contain no announcement or decision specific to DeepSeek. |
Sources: the authorities' own announcements (Garante decision 10098477, PIPC press release, Berlin BlnBDI press release and 2025 annual report). Their current status (e.g. the app being republished in South Korea) is not clear in official statements. News sites were not counted as sources in this table.
If you work at a public institution or a company, check your organization's AI usage policy: even without a legal ban, company policy may restrict DeepSeek.
Can I use what DeepSeek writes in my business?
According to the terms of use, you keep the rights to your inputs; the rights to the outputs (if any) are assigned to you. You can use the output for a wide range of purposes, including personal use, academic research, developing derivative products and even training another model, as long as it is legal and you follow the terms.
- Using the text you generate in proposals, reports and social media content
- Using the output to develop derivative products
- Downloading the open-weight models (MIT) and using them in your own product
- Copying, renting, selling or sublicensing all or part of the service without permission
- Reverse engineering the service or scraping content with bots
- Transferring or renting your account to someone else
- Publishing the output without stating that it is AI-generated
- If you publish the output, you need to check its accuracy and state that it is AI-generated (Terms 3.1).
- For significant decisions about people, such as credit, education, hiring, insurance, legal and health matters, the output must go through human review; the responsibility is yours (Terms 5.4).
- The open-weight model repositories are MIT-licensed (V4.1-Flash, V4-Pro, V4-Flash, V3.2, R1): you are free to use them, modify them and use them in a commercial product; you must keep the license text and copyright notice. Exception: R1's small distilled models derive from bases under other licenses: the Qwen-based ones are Apache 2.0, while Llama-8B and Llama-70B are bound by Llama's own licenses.
Source: DeepSeek Terms of Use (March 27, 2026) 3.1, 3.6, 4.2, 5.4; Hugging Face model cards. This is not legal advice.
Common problems and fixes
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| The verification code doesn't arrive | Check the number or email address, check your phone's signal and spam/blocking settings, and wait a while if you requested many codes in a short time. If you recently ported your number, it can take 24 hours to take effect. Restart your phone and request a new code. |
| "Current device environment error" | Your IP address or number has been flagged as high risk: try another network. If your email domain isn't supported, sign up with Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail or Yahoo. If it persists, write to service@deepseek.com. |
| Google sign-in doesn't work | Google sign-in isn't supported on mainland China IP addresses. Check your network; try signing in with email or Apple. |
| "Your account has been temporarily suspended" | Your account was suspended over a possible violation of the usage rules. Appeal with the "Account Suspension Appeal" form; the review usually takes 3 business days. |
| File upload failed | The format may be unsupported, the network unstable, the file size or count limit exceeded, or the file corrupted or in violation of the terms. Check these and try again. |
| A chat disappeared | It may be on another branch: switch between branches with the arrows and numbers under the question or answer. If it is a sync problem, refresh the page on the web, or pull down the history bar in the app to refresh. |
| A chat I deleted won't come back | Deleted chats can't be recovered. Back up important chats with Settings then Data then Export data. |
| There are questions in my account I didn't ask | Your account may have been left signed in on a shared device: Settings then Account settings then Log out of all devices, then reset your password with "Forgot Password" on the sign-in screen. |
| Chat history won't load | Check your network. If the chat context is very long, open the history in the web version. |
| "Server busy" / "The server is busy" | A temporary error seen during heavy traffic; try again in a few minutes. Official status page: status.deepseek.com. Reported by users This error was reported most often during the surge in January 2025. |
| Fake DeepSeek site or app | Download only from official channels; the address must be on the deepseek.com domain, and don't enter your sign-in details on any other address. Reported by users Kaspersky's warning about fake DeepSeek sign-in pages was shared on Turkish forums. |
| Writing style or language drifts | Add "answer in English" (or the language you want) to your message; regenerate the answer. Users have reported Chinese characters slipping in with small local models. |
Is DeepSeek free for students, and can under-18s use it?
Since chat is free for everyone, there is no special student plan or discount. The Terms of Use say the service is mainly intended for adults: people under 18 (or under the minimum age in their country) should read the terms with a guardian and use it with the guardian's permission. The App Store Turkey page shows an age rating of 13+.
If you want to work with it as an organization, you can request an offline agreement for the API with a "Cooperation Agreement Application" ticket; a "Rate Limit Increase Request" for higher concurrent requests is free.
How do you delete a DeepSeek account, and is there a subscription to cancel?
There is no monthly subscription, so there is no plan to cancel. The only things to delete are the account and the chats.
- Back up your data first: Settings then Data then Export data. The download link is valid for 7 days.
- Open Settings then Account settings then Delete Account (if it doesn't appear in an old version, update the app).
- Confirm. The account's entire chat history is permanently deleted, any API balance is lost and the account can't be reopened.
Unused API balance can be refunded: Billing › Refunds for online payments; a support ticket (Refund Request) for corporate bank transfers. Request the refund before deleting the account, because the unused balance of a deleted account is lost.
DeepSeek states in Terms of Use 2.5 that it may keep some data after deletion for legal obligations.
