What Is prompts.chat? Ready-Made Prompt Library, Claude Code Plugin, MCP and License

On prompts.chat you search for a ready-made prompt or skill for a task, read it and copy it; no account is needed. It is a free, open-source library and social platform for community-shared AI prompts (formerly Awesome ChatGPT Prompts); on October 14, 2026 the site showed 2448 prompts and 98 skills. There is also a Claude Code plugin (2 commands, 2 agents, 2 skills) and a remote MCP server. Watch out: the plugin and MCP are not read-only; with an API key they save prompts and skills to your account, can delete skill files, and also write skills to your local .claude/skills folder. The source code is MIT, the prompt content CC0 (public domain).

What is prompts.chat for?

A library for starting from a ready-made prompt whenever you don't know what to write: code review, writing, translation and more. On the site you search by category, tag and type (text, structured, image, video, audio), copy a prompt and fill in its variables (for example ${topic}). The repository was opened on December 5, 2022 under the name "Awesome ChatGPT Prompts".

The main product is the prompt library; the Claude Code plugin is a small part of it: it brings two slash commands (prompt and skill search), two agents (prompt-manager, skill-manager), two skills (prompt-lookup, skill-lookup) and the remote MCP server. The plugin defines no hooks.

Who it's for: anyone looking for ready-made prompts; Claude Code users who want to search from the command line. The prompts are community content: read them before using; there is no official promise of review for accuracy or safety.

How do you install prompts.chat?

Using the site needs no installation. Below are the options for the Claude Code plugin, MCP and self-hosting. The commands are taken verbatim from the README and the plugin documentation.

1. Add the marketplace› /plugin marketplace add f/prompts.chat
2. Install the plugin› /plugin install prompts.chat@prompts.chat

Then search prompts with /prompts.chat:prompts and skills with /prompts.chat:skills.

An account is only needed to create and save prompts (sign in with GitHub or Google). To save via MCP, you create an API key (starting with pchat_) on the prompts.chat/settings page.

How do you use prompts.chat?

With the plugin you use commands or natural language; with MCP the assistant calls the search tool itself. Don't use a prompt you find without adapting it to your own task.

Search in Claude Code"/prompts.chat:prompts code review --type TEXT"
Ask in natural language"Search prompts.chat for a good prompt template for writing emails, show the three best matches and list their variables."
Search skills"/prompts.chat:skills pdf"

Skills are community content, and skill-lookup writes the files of the skill you choose to your local .claude/skills folder. Read SKILL.md and its accompanying files before installing.

What does prompts.chat access, and what does it write?

Reads without an account

Searches and fetches public prompts and skills. With an API key it also reads your private prompts.

Writes with a key

save_prompt, save_skill, add_file_to_skill and update_skill_file write to your account. The API documentation also marks improve_prompt as requiring authentication.

Deletes

remove_file_from_skill deletes a file from your own skill (SKILL.md can't be deleted).

Writes locally

The skill-lookup skill, if you want, writes the selected skill's files to the .claude/skills folder on your computer.

Data: the remote MCP address runs on the project owner's server; your search queries and whatever you save go there. According to the privacy policy, creating an account stores your email, username and profile information, and Google Analytics is used (it can be turned off when self-hosting). Accounts suspected of abuse are flagged: a limit of 5 prompts per day and new prompts automatically delisted.

Prompts are community content anyone can write; a prompt someone wrote could steer your assistant toward something unwanted. A GitHub Security Advisories scan shows no published advisories (0 records). That does not mean "safe." For reporting security vulnerabilities, security@prompts.chat is recommended rather than a public issue.

Is prompts.chat free, and what's the license?

Yes. The site describes itself as "free and open source"; no paid plan appears for the site, repository, plugin or MCP. The author's interactive prompt book is sold separately on Gumroad; its price is listed there. Hosting costs for self-hosting are yours.

Allowed
  • Source code and site content are MIT: free to use and modify
  • Prompt content and data are CC0 1.0 (public domain): free to use, including commercially
Not allowed
  • You can't take back a prompt you publish: it becomes public domain under CC0, and deleting your account doesn't remove it

Source: the LICENSE file and the site. GitHub's license field shows "NOASSERTION" because of the dual license. This is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is prompts.chat?

A free, open-source library and social platform for community-shared AI prompts, formerly Awesome ChatGPT Prompts. There is a site, a GitHub repository, an MCP server and a Claude Code plugin.

Do I need an account?

Not to browse and search. Creating and saving prompts requires signing in with GitHub or Google; saving via MCP also requires an API key.

Are the plugin and MCP read-only?

No. Searching and reading work without an account, but with an API key they save prompts and skills to your account and delete skill files; skill-lookup writes skill files to a local folder.

What's the license, and can I use it commercially?

Prompt content is CC0 (public domain), the source code MIT. Both allow commercial use.

Can my prompts be deleted?

No, published prompts can't be taken back under CC0, and deleting your account doesn't remove them. Admins, however, can remove or delist a prompt.

Can I host it on my own server?

Yes. It requires Node.js 24 and PostgreSQL; the npx prompts.chat new command sets up a scaffold. A self-hosted instance isn't bound by the public site's moderation rules.

Are prompts moderated?

Partly: suspicious accounts are flagged, admins can remove content and explicit content is prohibited. There is no official promise of review for prompt accuracy or safety; read before using.
