What Is Social Media Skills? Installation, 17 Skills, Cost and Permissions

First you extract your own writing voice with voice-builder; then you ask Codex or Claude for a LinkedIn post, a Reels script, a YouTube thumbnail prompt, a carousel or LinkedIn analytics. Social Media Skills is an MIT-licensed open-source collection of 17 independent skills; the skills are text instructions, and the repo has no hooks, MCP server or scripts that run at install. It creates content but does not publish it. Most skills need no extra keys; only the analyze-from-Reel-URL path (reels-scripting) needs Apify and Google AI keys. In Claude Code, installation takes two commands.

What is Social Media Skills for?

A skill is an instruction package that teaches an agent how to work on a topic. This collection has 17 skills; each is a SKILL.md file (two have extra reference files). First you use voice-builder to extract a voice profile from your own writing samples, and then the other skills work in that voice.

Who it helps: people who regularly create LinkedIn, Reels or YouTube content and want the agent's writing to sound closer to their own voice.

How do I install Social Media Skills?

The commands are exactly as given in the README.

Add the marketplace› /plugin marketplace add charlie947/social-media-skills
Install› /plugin install social-media-skills

For updates, Claude Code's own plugin update mechanism is used.

Copied or uploaded skills don't update when the source changes (README); the Claude Code plugin route uses its own update mechanism. The documentation has no steps for Cursor and other clients; that doesn't mean they won't work.

How do I use Social Media Skills?

For personal writing, run voice-builder first (or provide your own approved voice files). The README tells you not to use the maintainer's default voice. Then ask in a normal sentence.

Extract voice"Use voice-builder to extract my writing voice from these three old LinkedIn posts of mine and write it to voice.md. The samples are below."
Post"Write me a LinkedIn post about AI agents. My voice is in voice.md; suggest three different hooks."
Thumbnail"Prepare a YouTube thumbnail prompt for this video. Title: "AI for small agencies"."

What does Social Media Skills access?

Reads

The about-me, voice and newsletter-voice files in the project you choose; the writing samples you provide and your LinkedIn export file. niche-research browses Reddit, X and Google feeds with a browser and search tool.

Writes

about-me and voice files in the project, outputs under the outputs folder; post, script and image prompt texts in the chat. reels-scripting writes and runs a Node script.

Deletes

No deletion step.

Data

The skill files run locally. If you use the Apify or Gemini path, the Reel URL and video go to the respective provider.

README: saving a draft does not mean publishing it; the skills grant no permission to publish, send messages or change accounts. Don't paste Apify and Google keys into the chat; provide them as environment variables.

The repo has no hooks, MCP server or install script; it only has validation files meant for the maintainer. GitHub Security Advisories is empty; no recorded advisories appear. That doesn't mean it is "safe". One open issue title in the repo looks like a promotional message.

Is Social Media Skills free?

The collection itself is free and MIT licensed; the README lists no fee or plan. The agent tool you use (Claude Code, Codex) has its own separate cost. Third-party routes carry their own costs: reels-scripting's Reel URL analysis needs Apify and Google AI (Gemini) keys, and post-scorer optionally uses Apify. The cost of image generation with Gemini is not stated in the repo.

Common problems

What happensWhat to do
Codex skill-installer says "destination already exists"The installer refuses an existing destination; in a new task, verify that the skill is installed and check its path.
The installed skill doesn't change after an updateCopied skills don't update when the source changes: compare the installed folder with the new source, merge while keeping your changes, and reload in a new task.

How do I uninstall Social Media Skills?

  1. Claude Code: Remove the plugin from the /plugin menu.
  2. Codex: Delete the copies under .agents/skills.
  3. Claude Desktop: Remove the skills you uploaded from the Customise skills screen.

The README doesn't describe an uninstall step; the steps above are the general method.

Frequently asked questions

Which programs does Social Media Skills work in?

The official README covers installation for Codex, Claude Code and Claude Desktop. The documentation says nothing about others such as Cursor or Gemini CLI; that doesn't mean they won't work.

How many skills are there, and which ones?

17: voice-builder, newsletter-voice, profile-optimizer, post-writer, graphic-designer, post-scorer, reels-scripting, youtube-thumbnail, pinned-comment, hook-generator, post-formatter, content-matrix, niche-research, gemini-infographic, gemini-carousel, quote-post, analytics-dashboard.

Is it free? What is the license?

MIT licensed, open source. The Reels URL analysis path needs Apify and Gemini keys; those services charge their own fees.

Does it publish posts by itself?

No. The README says that saving a draft is not publishing and that the skills grant no permission to publish, send messages or change accounts.

Is it safe? What does it access?

The repo has no hooks, MCP server or scripts that run at install; the skills are text instructions. While running, it writes files to the project you choose, and niche-research browses Reddit and X feeds with a browser. There are no published security advisories; that doesn't mean it is safe.
