What Is Taste Skill? Setup, the v2 Change, Scripts and Network Calls

You install Taste Skill (npx skills add or the Claude Code plugin); your coding agent then designs public pages like landing pages, marketing sites and portfolios with art direction instead of an "average template" look. It is an MIT-licensed collection of 14 skills. The default skill (design-taste-frontend) moved to v2 on October 13, 2026 and now ships four Node scripts: it downloads images from open collection APIs without a key, drives your installed Chrome in headless mode and writes files to your project. It needs Node 22+ and Chrome, Edge or Chromium. It is not suited to dashboards and app screens.

What Is Taste Skill For?

A skill is an instruction package that teaches an agent how to work on a topic. Taste Skill has the agent read the brief for public pages like landing pages, marketing sites and portfolios, prepare a direction sheet, then draw, audit and measure the page. redesign-skill audits existing project code.

The default skill is not suited to dashboards, data tables and app screens. For product interfaces, the README recommends minimalist-skill or soft-skill.

With v2 on October 13, 2026, the default skill became a 29 KB skill without dials; the old 87 KB version with dials moved to a separate skill named taste-skill-v2-experimental. So older write-ups (three dials, no scripts running at install) are not accurate for the current default skill.

Who it is for: developers and designers who have an agent build marketing pages or portfolios and are unhappy that the output looks like a template.

How Do I Install Taste Skill?

Requirements: for the default skill, Node 22+ and an installed Chrome, Edge or Chromium (README: "installs nothing and needs no API keys"); internet access to find images. The commands are taken verbatim from the README.

Install all› npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill
Single skill› npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill --skill "design-taste-frontend"

A version-pinned command (npx skills@1.7.1) does not appear in the README. For the old behavior with dials, install the skills named design-taste-frontend-v2-experimental or design-taste-frontend-v1.

How Do I Use Taste Skill?

You don't need to call it separately; the agent brings the skill in when it sees design work. The clearer your brief, the more accurate the direction sheet.

Landing page"Design a landing page for an architecture studio. The target audience is people who want to build a home. Avoid a template look, derive a direction sheet from the brief and show it to me."
Redesign"Use redesign-skill to audit the current home page; list the parts that look like a template, and show me the fixes before applying them."

The developer shares their own tests (6 briefs, model judges); since the judging is done by a single judge that is itself a model, don't treat this as independent proof of quality.

What Does Taste Skill Access and Run?

Reads

The brief you give and your project code; previous direction picks in your home folder (history.json).

Writes

A .taste-skill folder in the project (direction sheet, screenshots, report), an assets folder and a source credits file; ~/.taste-skill/history.json in your home folder; the page code the agent writes.

Deletes

The measurement script deletes and replaces its own old screenshots in the output folder and deletes its temporary browser profile. It does not delete user files.

Data

The image script queries the Openverse, Wikimedia Commons, Art Institute of Chicago, Met Museum, Internet Archive and NASA APIs without a key and downloads images. The measurement script opens your page on a temporary server at 127.0.0.1 and drives your installed Chrome in headless mode.

This differs from the old version without dials: the default skill runs four scripts and goes online. Require approval for network access and file writes in your agent.

The repository has no hooks and no MCP server. GitHub Security Advisories is empty; no recorded advisories appear. That does not mean it is "secure". The npx skills installer sends anonymous telemetry (DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 or DO_NOT_TRACK=1 turns it off). Sponsor links in the README carry affiliate tracking.

Is Taste Skill Free?

The skills are free and MIT-licensed; the README lists no paid plan and asks for no API key. Your agent tool's own plan, and the need for an agent that can generate images for the visual skills, are separate matters. The README also promotes a desktop app called "TasteCode" from the same team (open source). No lira price is listed.

Common Problems

What happensWhat to do
"Node 22+ is required" errorThe measurement script uses Node's built-in WebSocket, so it needs Node 22+; the drawing, audit and image scripts run on Node 18+. If Chrome is not found, set CHROME_PATH or PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH.
The old dial-based behavior is goneThe default skill switched to v2 and has no dials. For the old behavior, install the skill named v2-experimental or v1.

How Do I Uninstall Taste Skill?

  1. If it is a plugin: remove it from Claude Code's plugin menu.
  2. If it is a skill: delete the taste-skill folders in your agent's skills folder.
  3. Leftovers: manually delete the .taste-skill folder in your project and the ~/.taste-skill/history.json file.

The README does not describe uninstalling; the steps above are the general method.

Frequently asked questions

Which tools does Taste Skill work in?

The README gives installation routes for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor (npx skills; plus a Claude Code and Codex plugin). The documentation says nothing about other clients; that does not mean it doesn't work.

How do I install Taste Skill?

npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill installs all of them; for a single skill, add --skill "design-taste-frontend" at the end. In Claude Code there is also plugin marketplace add Leonxlnx/taste-skill and plugin install taste-skill@taste-skill.

Is it free, and what is the license?

The skills are MIT-licensed and free; no API key required. Your agent's own plan terms are separate.

Is it safe, and what does it access?

The default skill ships four Node scripts: it queries and downloads images from open collections, opens your page on a local server in headless Chrome to measure it, and writes files to your project and home folder. The repository has no hooks and no MCP server. There are no published security advisories; that does not mean it is safe.

Can it be used for dashboards and app screens?

Not the default skill: the README says it is meant for public pages, and recommends minimalist-skill or soft-skill for product interfaces.

What changed with v2?

On October 13, 2026 the default skill switched to v2 without dials and started shipping scripts. The old 87 KB version with dials remains as a separate skill.
