What Is Canva MCP (Canva AI Connector)? Connecting Canva to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot

You connect your Canva account to the AI assistant you chat with (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot); from the chat you have it generate designs, search and read your designs, edit, resize and export them. Canva AI Connector is Canva's official connection, with Canva's MCP server running behind it. It works with a free Canva account, but design generation draws from Canva's AI allowance, and some tasks such as Brand Templates, resizing and Autofill require a paid plan. The official pages contradict each other on Autofill (three pages say Enterprise only, one says all plans except Pro Lite and Free, and the canva.dev table says Pro and above), so no single plan is given here. The assistant works only with your Canva permissions; when you disconnect, your designs stay in Canva.

What Is Canva MCP Used For?

Without opening Canva in a separate tab, you get work done in your Canva account from the assistant you chat with. The assistant works with your Canva permissions: it sees only the designs you can see and changes only the ones you have permission to edit.

MCP is a common connection format that lets an assistant connect to a service outside itself or to a program on your computer. This connection sits in the middle of the bridge: the assistant passes the request to it, it asks the target and brings the answer back.

Works with your Canva permissions; there's no delete tool in the canva.dev table.

  1. Generating a design by typing: "an Instagram story in tropical colors for a summer sale." You keep editing one of the resulting options in Canva.
  2. Finding and reading your designs: "find last quarter's presentations and summarize this one."
  3. Editing an existing design: change the headline, remove the jargon, add a page.
  4. Resizing and downloading: adapt a square post to story size, deliver it as a PDF or PPTX.

The number of tools varies by client: the canva.dev tool table lists 46 tools, the Claude connector directory shows fewer, and in Claude nine design tools are grouped into two, read and edit. That's why no single number is given; the capabilities are the same.

Who it's for: Canva users who want to quickly generate or find designs, or have small edits made, from a chat. If you want bulk production with brand templates, test the plan requirement first (see the pricing section).

How Do I Connect Canva to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot?

The path is different for each assistant. Menu names may change between versions; the steps below come from the Canva and assistant help pages.

  1. Open Claude, find Canva under Settings then Connectors and select it. Claude's help shows the same list under Customize then Connectors.
  2. Follow the prompts to connect your Canva account.
  3. Open a new chat and check in the Connectors section, via the settings icon, that Canva is turned on.

Connector URL (Claude directory): https://mcp.canva.com/mcp. On Team and Enterprise, the Owner first enables the connector for the organization, then everyone authorizes it with their own Canva account.

On a team or company account, an admin has to turn it on first: if the Canva team admin turns off AI Connector, no one can connect and existing connections stop working ("Access Restricted by Team Admin"). To generate designs, Magic Design also must not be turned off for the team (Settings then Permissions then Magic and AI).

How Do You Use Canva MCP?

Once connected, you write your request normally. Try tasks that require changes on a copy first.

Generate a design"In Canva, design an announcement for our café's weekend breakfast menu: warm colors, a big headline, the address at the bottom. Instagram post size, show three options."
Find and summarize"Find the presentations I made in Canva last quarter and summarize the main message of each in two sentences. Don't change anything."
Resize"Adapt this square post to story size and give me the link to the new design. Don't touch the original design."

In ChatGPT, only the design you select is saved to your Canva account; choose "Open in Canva" or the save option from the result.

Which countries apps are available in within ChatGPT depends on OpenAI's plan and region; in its first announcement, OpenAI mentioned users outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK and made no clear statement about Turkey. The sources also conflict on whether the connector is available on Canva Education (including primary and secondary school teachers and students): the help page says "including Education," while the ai-connector FAQ says "higher education only."

What Can It See, Change and Delete in My Canva?

Reads

Designs you have permission to view (presentations, documents, folders shared with you): text and images, pages, speaker notes, comments, folder contents; on a paid plan, Brand Templates and Brand Kits shared with you.

Writes

Creates, edits (an opened editing transaction is saved once confirmed), copies, merges and resizes designs, imports from a URL, uploads assets, creates and moves folders, adds and replies to comments, and creates and publishes Brand Template drafts. It can't change a design you don't have edit permission for.

Deletes

The canva.dev tool table has no tool for deleting designs, folders or assets. But once an edit is saved, the original design changes; copying doesn't change the original, and there's also a tool to discard changes without saving.

Data

Each person authorizes separately with their own Canva account via OAuth. The server communicates with the canva.com and canva.ai domains. According to Claude's help, connected services process data on their own infrastructure, which may be outside the US. Canva's usage policy for partners says Canva data can't be used to train external AI models.

In Claude, under Customize then Connectors then Canva then Tool permissions, you can choose "always allow," "ask for approval" or "block" for each tool; requiring approval for write tools is a good start. Team and Enterprise owners can turn off write tools across the organization.

This information is compiled from official documentation; it isn't a security audit or certification. For designs that contain company data, check your team's data rules first; Canva also recommends that admins review their data rules before turning on the connector.

Is Canva MCP Free? Which Tasks Are on Which Plan?

The connection works with a free Canva account; a paid plan isn't required. But some tasks are limited or paid:

TaskPlan status
Generating designsDraws from Canva's monthly AI allowance (about 20 uses on the free plan); the assistant's own message limit is separate
ResizingPro and above; a limited trial on free accounts
ExportingStandard quality on free accounts; designs with premium elements may not export
Brand Kit and Brand TemplatesPaid plan (Canva help pages; they say Education is included)
Brand Template searchThe help pages say paid plans, the ai-connector FAQ says Enterprise only: they conflict
Autofill (filling a template with data)Conflicting: three Canva pages say Enterprise only, mcp-agent-setup says all plans except Pro Lite and Free, the canva.dev tool table says Pro and above

No single plan is given for Autofill and Brand Templates: some official sources say Enterprise only, others say more. Try it in the chat; if an upgrade message appears, your plan doesn't include it. Check your plan on the Billing & plans page in Canva. For bulk work, also look at Canva's own Bulk Create feature.

How many uses each AI action takes from your Canva allowance appears on the help pages only as "some actions (e.g., generating designs)"; there's no full table. Check the assistant's own plan (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot) separately. There's no Turkish lira pricing. This isn't financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paid plan to connect Canva to ChatGPT or Claude?

No, a free Canva account is enough. But generating designs draws from your Canva AI allowance, and resizing and brand tools require a paid plan.

Which plan is Autofill (filling a template with data) on?

The official pages conflict: three Canva pages say Enterprise only, one page says all plans except Pro Lite and Free, and the canva.dev tool table says Pro and above. No single plan can be given; try it in the chat, and if an upgrade message appears, your plan doesn't include it.

What can Canva MCP see, and can it make changes?

It reads designs you have permission to view; it can create and edit designs. It works only with your Canva permissions and can't change a design you don't have edit permission for. The canva.dev tool table has no delete tool.

Why doesn't it work on my team account?

The Canva team admin may have turned off AI Connector; on a company Claude or ChatGPT account, an admin also has to enable the connector. To generate designs, Magic Design must be turned on as well.

Why isn't the design I made in ChatGPT in Canva?

In ChatGPT, only the design you select is saved to your Canva account; choose Open in Canva or the save option from the result.

Will my designs be deleted if I disconnect?

No. The assistant loses access, and the designs stay in Canva.

Are Canva MCP and the Developer MCP Server the same thing?

No. AI Connector connects everyday users to an assistant; the Developer MCP Server is for people building apps on Canva.

Does it work in ChatGPT from Turkey?

It's unclear: OpenAI says access to apps varies by plan, region and workspace, and there's no clear statement about Turkey. If Canva doesn't show up in the Plugins list on your account, it's turned off for your plan or region.
