What is Microsoft Copilot used for?
It has two parts: the Copilot chat app that anyone can use, and Copilot working inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook with a Microsoft 365 subscription. On August 18, 2026, the personal Copilot app and the Microsoft 365 Copilot app merged into a single “Microsoft Copilot” app; work/school and personal account data stay separate.
It answers questions, writes and summarizes; you upload Word, Excel, PowerPoint, image or PDF files; it creates images from a description. Free, subject to capacity and limits.
With Copilot Voice you talk to it; with Vision you show your screen or camera and ask questions. Usage is higher on the top plans.
Drafts in Word, data analysis in Excel, presentations in PowerPoint, email drafts in Outlook. Requires a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Multi-step research and data analysis only in Premium and Pro. Cowork is in preview; according to the official table, only in the US and Canada.
!Video generation is not listed as a feature on the current official pages; if you see it in your app, try it. On August 18, 2026, Group Chat, Podcasts and Deep Research in the consumer app were removed.
How do you download Microsoft Copilot and set up an account?
Open copilot.microsoft.com or copilot.com and sign in with a Microsoft, Google or Apple account. The Terms of Use (August 18, 2026) require a Microsoft account for Copilot; an older support page says “signing in is not required,” and the newer Terms are taken as the reference.
Click the Copilot icon on the taskbar; if it isn't there, download the “Copilot” app (Microsoft Corporation) from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft does not say it comes preinstalled on Windows 11.
Use “Download for Mac” on Microsoft's Copilot download page; it requires macOS Sonoma 14 or later.
iPhone: “Microsoft Copilot” on the App Store (iOS 18.0+, ages 12+, free, offers in-app purchases). Android: same name on Google Play, contains ads, offers in-app purchases. This store app is actually the new version of the old Office mobile app; you also open Word, Excel and PowerPoint files from it.
Age: at least 13 (may be higher depending on the country); some features are off for users under 18. No official page says a phone verification or ID is required. Personal and work/school accounts stay separate in the same app.
How do you use Copilot? A PowerPoint and Excel example
To chat, open copilot.microsoft.com or start the Copilot app and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Open a new presentation in PowerPoint and click the Copilot icon at the bottom right.
- In the chat box, select Add Content and Agent Mode, then write a request describing the presentation.
- Copilot may first ask questions such as audience and style, then drafts an outline; once you approve it, it creates the slides.
- You can also say “create a presentation from a file” and point it to a Word document.
For Copilot to work in Excel, the file must be saved to OneDrive with AutoSave turned on; it does not work on an unsaved file.
Which mode? Quick response, Think Deeper, Smart
| Mode | What it's for, per Microsoft | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Quick response | Instant, direct answers | Fastest mode |
| Think Deeper | Complex topics, detailed problem solving; runs on OpenAI's reasoning models | Answers can take up to 10 seconds; paid plans get priority |
| Study and learn | Teaches a topic, guides you to the answer, runs quizzes | Available to all users |
| Smart | Thinks fast or deep depending on the task; the most advanced reasoning and conversation | The modes page says “GPT-5” |
| Search | Up-to-date answers from the web, with sources | Available to all users |
The modes page describes the old interface; it does not say whether it still applies as-is to the new app after August 18, 2026. Store pages for the new app say “choose between OpenAI and Anthropic models”; which model is available on which plan is not stated in the official sources, so no model names are given here. Section checked on October 14, 2026.
Is Copilot free? Plans, pricing and limits
Copilot chat, image creation and file uploads are free; free use has no numeric limit but depends on capacity and limits. When you reach the limit, you are advised to switch to a paid plan or come back later. Copilot in the Office desktop apps requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. Without a subscription, you may see ads.

!On the Family plan, Copilot is available only to the subscription owner; the other 5 people can't use it. The hidden “this product is not available in your market” text on the Turkish pricing page is a leftover from the page template; it does not mean the plan is unavailable in Turkey.

Are my chats used for training? Retention and deletion
For the new app (after August 18, 2026, personal account), Microsoft states that prompts, responses and file contents are not used to train its foundation models; the new privacy menu has no training toggle. Use inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint with a Microsoft 365 subscription is not used for training either. However, the Terms of Use grant permission to use content to operate and improve Copilot; Microsoft does not explain how these two statements relate.
The previously described “profile › Privacy › turn off training” path carries a “legacy version only” warning on Microsoft's own pages. In the new app, the settings are under Settings then Personalization: Saved memories, Shared experiences, Web search, ad personalization.
In the old app, conversation activity was kept for 18 months. For the new app, no retention period is stated; it is unclear whether the 18 months still applies.
A single chat: ... › Delete next to the chat in the Chats list. All history: Copilot activity history in the Microsoft privacy dashboard. Turning off the memory toggle does not delete earlier memories; you delete them with Manage. There is no Copilot-specific account deletion; you close the Microsoft account. There is no statement specific to KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law).
Can Copilot be used for commercial work?
The Terms of Use (August 18, 2026) say “you may use Copilot only for your own personal use.” What this means for commercial work, such as creating content for a client, is not explained in the official sources. Microsoft does not own your prompts and responses but gets permission to use them to operate and improve Copilot. Responses may not be unique to you; there is no guarantee that generated content won't infringe copyright or trademarks; publishing it is your responsibility. Removing content credentials is prohibited.
For business use, Microsoft 365 Copilot (work/school account, enterprise data protection) is a separate product under separate terms.
Common problems and fixes
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| Copilot doesn't work in Excel | The file must be saved to OneDrive with AutoSave on; you also need Microsoft 365 Personal or higher. |
| Other people on my family plan can't see Copilot | On Family and Premium, AI is available only to the subscription owner. |
| The App Store app won't open my Excel file | The store app is the new version of the old Office mobile app; complaints in reviews come from this transition. Update to the latest version or use the Office apps separately. |
| I can't find Copilot Pro | It was withdrawn from sale on October 1, 2025; Microsoft 365 Premium replaced it. |
| I see Cowork instead of “Tasks” | Former Tasks users are being moved to Cowork; Personal and Family subscribers lose Cowork access. |
| No Copilot icon on Windows | Download the Copilot app from the Microsoft Store. |
Is Copilot free for students?
Free Copilot chat is open to everyone. For Copilot in Word and Excel, university and college students get 50 percent off Microsoft 365 Personal. Some schools give Microsoft 365 to their students for free; ask your school's IT department first.
- Create a Microsoft account with your personal email (a school account won't work).
- On the order page, verify with your school email or proof of enrollment.
- Complete the order using the link sent to your school email.
Searches for “GitHub Copilot free for students” describe a different product: GitHub Copilot for developers comes with the GitHub Student Developer Pack. The official sources don't clarify whether the “12 months of free Premium” offer mentioned on Reddit applies in Turkey.
How do you turn off Copilot, cancel the subscription, and is there a refund?
- To remove it from Windows 11: Settings then Apps then Installed apps › Copilot › Uninstall.
- If you don't want it in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, clear the Enable Copilot box in that app's settings. In Outlook, use the Turn on Copilot toggle (new Outlook: Settings then Copilot).
- To cancel the subscription: at account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 go to Services & subscriptions › Manage › Cancel (the button may also read “Upgrade or Cancel”), then “I don't want my subscription”. If you bought it from a store or a third-party retailer, cancel there.
When you cancel, storage drops to 5 GB; if you are over the quota, you can't upload to OneDrive or receive email in Outlook.com. Two Microsoft pages give different periods before OneDrive content is deleted (6 months and 12 months): back up before cancelling.
Turkey is on the country list of Microsoft's refund page: for Basic, Personal, Family, Premium and Pro subscriptions bought directly from Microsoft, you can cancel any time and get a prorated refund (based on the unused period). In countries not on the list, a 14-day window from the first purchase applies to Premium and Pro. For store purchases, refunds depend on the store.
