What is DeepL? Free plan, Pro pricing, document translation, Write and Turkish support

You type or paste text into DeepL, or upload a Word, PowerPoint or PDF file, and get a translation between more than 100 languages, Turkish included. It is an AI translation tool based in Germany. The free version translates 50,000 characters of text and 1 file (up to 5 MB) per month; the Individual plan is $8.74 per month billed yearly (as shown with Turkey selected on the pricing page). Watch out: on the free version, what you type is used to train the models, and the terms forbid translating personal or confidential data; that requires Pro. DeepL Write (writing correction) does not support Turkish text.

What does DeepL do?

DeepL is a tool that translates a text or a file into another language. It translates the text you type, and it translates Word, PowerPoint and PDF files without breaking the page layout. Besides translation it has two side products: writing correction (DeepL Write) and live translation in meetings (DeepL Voice).

Who it helps: business owners who correspond with foreign customers, translate catalogs, proposals or contracts, or export; students and academics reading papers; anyone joining a meeting in another language.

The translation is machine translation: it is fluent and accurate but can make mistakes. Official documents, contracts and medical texts need a human read-through before they are published or signed in any setting that matters.

How do you download DeepL and create an account?

You can use DeepL in the browser without an account. An account (email and password) is free; it is needed for document translation, saved translations and paid plans. Apps and extensions require a separate sign-in: signing in on the website does not sign you in to the app automatically.

  1. Open deepl.com/translator. Type or paste text in the left box and see the translation in the right box. You choose the target language; for the source language there is a “Detect language” option.
  2. If you want to translate a file Drag a Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx) or PDF file onto the page. You need to be signed in for this.
  3. To create an account Use the “Log in” button to set an email and password. The official policy says it stores only your email, password and IP address for the account; it does not mention phone verification.

How do you use DeepL? Translating text step by step

  1. Open deepl.com/translator or launch the app.
  2. Type or paste the text to translate in the left box; choose the source language or leave it on “Detect language”.
  3. Choose the target language from the language button at the top (for example, Turkish to English or the other way around).
  4. See the translation in the right box; click a word to see alternative renderings. Alternatives are available for Turkish.
  5. If you want brand names and terms always translated the same way, create a glossary; Turkish is one of the glossary languages.

On the free version, don't paste customer correspondence, contracts or text containing personal data: the free service terms forbid it and the text is used to train the models. Details in the “My data” section.

Type and translate"Hello, we have received your proposal. Could you clarify the line items in the price table and the delivery date?"Paste the text in the left box and choose German as the target language; read the result yourself before sending it.
Term consistency"Glossary: “Northwind Coffee” → “Northwind Coffee” (do not translate the brand name). Select the glossary and translate the text."This stops the same word from coming out in two different forms; the glossary is saved with your account.
Ways to get a better translation
  • Upload a long document as a file instead of splitting it; the page layout is kept and there are no splitting errors.
  • Write abbreviations and short sentences out clearly; the clearer the source text, the better the translation.
  • After translating, compare numbers, dates and proper names with the source.

Translating PDF, Word and PowerPoint files with DeepL

DOCXWordPPTXPowerPointPDFPDF

File translation means uploading a document and getting it back in the same format: the text is translated, while the page layout, tables and images stay. A free account translates Word, PowerPoint and PDF; paid plans add more formats such as Excel, HTML, plain text, SRT and XLIFF.

Individual330 MB1 million
Team2030 MB1 million
Business100100 MB1 million
  • Editing: on a free account the translated file cannot be edited; editing requires a Pro subscription.
  • Excel (.xlsx): not on the free account or Individual; available from Team up (Team 20 MB).
  • Batch translation: you can upload several files together; the target language is the same for all of them.
  • Scanned PDF: translation relies on text recognition and the error rate is high. Scan at 300 DPI; if possible, upload the original Word or PowerPoint file instead of the PDF.
  • PDF from CAD: PDFs exported from CAD, such as floor plans, are not supported.
  • Download a PDF as Word: there is an option to download the translated PDF as Word (.docx); the official page ties this to Pro plans.

The text of documents you upload with a free account is also subject to the free service terms (it may be used for training). Translate documents containing confidential or personal data with a Pro plan.

What is DeepL Voice, and does live meeting translation work in Turkish?

DeepL Voice translates spoken words live: captions or translated audio in an online meeting (Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet), and a two-language conversation by phone in person. Translation needs a separate Voice plan or the 30 minutes per month included in a paid Translator plan.

Connecting DeepL inside Claude

DeepL can also be used inside Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot via MCP. The official route for Claude is to add a DeepL connector; you approve the sign-in on the DeepL page.

  1. In claude.ai or Claude Desktop, open Customize then Connectors.
  2. If DeepL is in the list, select it and click Connect; if not, use “Add custom connector” and enter the address below.
  3. Sign in with your account on the DeepL page that opens.
Custom connector address› https://mcp.deepl.com/v1/mcp

On Team and Enterprise plans the Claude owner adds the connector; for document translation, the mcp.deepl.com domain must be allowed in network access. The free Claude plan allows only 1 custom connector. DeepL's help page does not clearly state which DeepL plan this connection works with.

What does it cost if you buy on your phone?

The App Store lists in-app purchase plans for DeepL Translate: Individual, Individual + Write Pro, Voice Starter and Voice Business, each billed monthly or yearly. The store page does not say which amount belongs to which plan; you see it next to the plan name on the purchase screen.

  • Monthly: in-app prices are set per country by the App Store and shown on the purchase screen.
  • Yearly: same; see the official pricing page for US-dollar web prices.

Source: App Store, DeepL Translate, October 14, 2026. Buying on the web is billed by DeepL; buying on the phone is billed by Apple in the store's local currency.

What to know about payment
  • Currency: EUR for the EU, the UK, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, JPY for Japan, CAD for Canada; other countries, Turkey included, are billed in USD.
  • Payment method: credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay, JCB, Discover, Diners Club, Cartes Bancaires). PayPal is not accepted. Bank transfer only for businesses in the SEPA area.
  • Tax: the Germany view says “VAT included in the price”; the Turkey view has no tax note on the page, and you see the final amount at checkout.
  • Trial: 30 days free for Individual and Team; anyone who has used a trial before cannot get another. Card details are requested at the start of the trial.
  • Buying from Turkey: Turkey is on the list of countries where paid plans are sold. Reported by users Some cards reportedly get a “technical error” or “payment method could not be verified” error; see the “Common problems” section.
What happens when you hit the character limit?

The official sources don't separately say what happens when the free version's 50,000 characters per month run out. Reported by users Users report having to wait a few days until the limit resets. Individual starts at 300,000 characters. File translation is a separate quota, and unused file allowance does not roll over to the next month. The official sources also don't state how much text you can enter at once; if you hit a limit, try splitting the text or uploading it as a file.

What happens to what I type into DeepL? Training, retention, KVKK

Training on the free version

Texts you enter into the free DeepL Translator and Write, and their translations, are processed for a limited time to train and improve neural networks; your translation corrections are included. The privacy policy defines no opt-out setting for the free version.

Personal and confidential data

The free service terms of use forbid processing any text containing personal data or confidential information on the free version. Texts such as customer names, contracts or patient reports require Pro.

On Pro plans

Texts and translations are kept only temporarily, as long as the service needs them, then deleted, and never used for model training. For texts containing personal data, the Pro terms provide for a data processing agreement (DPA); to get a DPA, write to privacy@deepl.com. DeepL lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certifications.

Retention period

On the free version texts are processed for a "limited time"; official sources do not state the period. Technical error logs (not text) are deleted after 14 days. Things you choose to save (saved translations, glossaries) stay in your account.

Document translation

Documents you upload, with either a free account or Pro, are translated only on DeepL's infrastructure in the European Economic Area. On the free version, document text also falls under training.

Where the data goes

The data controller is DeepL SE in Cologne. Under KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law), a transfer from Turkey to the EU is a cross-border transfer; the official page states no Turkey-specific transfer safeguard. This is not legal advice.

Voice data

Voice data is processed in real time and not used for model training. Online meeting data is deleted from server memory when the call ends; the transcript may stay locally in the browser depending on the organization's retention setting.

Translation history

In the desktop and mobile apps, history stays only locally on your device: 7 days without an account, 30 with a free account, 365 on Pro. It is gone when you delete the app.

Deleting your account

“Delete account” at the bottom of the account page. It cannot be deleted while you have an active subscription; cancel first. A deleted account cannot be reopened, and access to invoices and glossaries ends.

When a subscription ends

When a subscription ends, glossaries, saved translations and style rules are deleted after 90 days; team accounts are dissolved after 90 days. Download your glossaries and invoices beforehand.

If you use DeepL for work, the rule is simple: don't paste any text containing customer data, contracts, employee or patient information into the free version. Either remove the personal details or translate with a Pro plan.

Can I use DeepL translations for my business?

Yes. The free services terms of use treat both private and business use as free, and say that DeepL does not acquire copyright in the translations. So you can use the proposal, catalog or email you translated in your business.

Allowed
  • Using the translated text in a proposal, catalog, website or email
  • Using the free version for business purposes too (without personal data)
Not allowed
  • Redirecting or selling the free service to third parties for a fee
  • Translating text containing confidential or personal data on the free version
  • Using DeepL's internal APIs without written permission
  • Reselling Pro access or a key to someone else
  • The translation is machine translation; you are responsible for its accuracy and for the consequences of published text, and DeepL does not accept responsibility for accuracy in its terms of use.
  • If you will work with customer data regularly, look at the Pro plans, which come with a data processing agreement.

Common problems and fixes

What happensWhat to do
I ran out of monthly charactersThe free version has 50,000 characters per month. Reported by users Users report having to wait until the limit resets; either wait or move to a plan such as Individual. File translation is a separate quota (1 per month).

The file won't upload or translateCheck whether the format is on your plan (only Word, PowerPoint and PDF on the free version), whether the file exceeds 5 MB and 100,000 characters, whether it is password-protected, and whether you are signed in. If a Word file has pending tracked changes, accept or reject them all.
A scanned PDF translated badlyText recognition makes mistakes. Rescan at 300 DPI; if you have the original Word or PowerPoint file, upload that.

I can't subscribe with my card from TurkeyReported by users People reporting a “technical error” or “payment method could not be verified” tried another card, another browser or a private window. The official page has no Turkey-specific explanation; make sure your card is enabled for international payments and write to support.
I was charged when the trial endedIf you don't cancel during the trial, the subscription starts. If you cancel during the trial, you can use it until the trial ends and you are not charged. For refund eligibility after cancelling during a free trial, contact the DeepL Help Center via chat.
My glossaries disappeared after my subscription endedWhen a subscription ends, glossaries, saved translations and style rules are deleted after 90 days. Download your glossaries before it ends.
I want to delete my account but it won't deleteAn account cannot be deleted while a subscription is active. Cancel the subscription first; when the period ends, the “Delete account” option appears. If it doesn't, write to support.

Is there a DeepL student discount?

The official sources (pricing page, Help Center, App Store) do not list a discount or free plan for students or academics. Reported by users Some App Store reviewers complain that "there is no plan for students".

What you can do: the free version is open to everyone (50,000 characters and 1 file per month). For schools or companies buying subscriptions for many users, the pricing page points to the sales team to discuss a discount.

How do you cancel a DeepL subscription, and are there refunds?

  1. Sign in to your DeepL account and open the “Subscription” tab.
  2. Select the subscription you want to cancel and click the “Cancel subscription” button at the bottom of the page.
  3. Cancel at least 1 day before the next payment; the subscription ends at the end of the billing period and you can use it until then.
  4. If you bought it from the App Store or Google Play, you can cancel only in the store; neither deleting the app nor signing out of DeepL ends the subscription.
Refunds

If you cancel mid-period, no credit or refund is given for the remaining time. Refunds apply to people who cancel during a free trial and to those within the statutory withdrawal period: DeepL's terms give anyone who counts as a consumer under the mandatory law of their country of residence the right to withdraw from the contract within 14 days without giving a reason. No separate rule for Turkey is stated; ask about refund eligibility via the Help Center chat while signed in. If you bought through the App Store or Google Play, the store handles the refund.

After cancelling

After you cancel, Pro features continue until the period ends. To undo the cancellation, click “Reactivate subscription” in the yellow banner. When the period ends, glossaries and saved translations are deleted after 90 days.

DeepL, Google Translate or ChatGPT?

The official sources do not compare it with other tools; which one is "better" depends on the language pair and the text. For an important text, try the first page of your own text side by side in two tools. Where DeepL stands out: document translation that keeps the file format, term consistency with glossaries, Word and Outlook add-ins, and live speech translation.
