What is Figma MCP? Connecting Figma to Claude and Cursor, design to code, call limits and seat requirements
You have your assistant turn a Figma frame into code or produce a design in Figma; Figma MCP gives the assistant the design's context (components, variables, layout) and lets it write designs to Figma files. It is Figma's official server; the recommended route is the remote server hosted by Figma (mcp.figma.com): it connects as a connector in Claude, and as a plugin or with a single command in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code. The server has no separate fee, but your usage allowance depends on your Figma plan and seat type: 20 calls per month on the Starter plan and on View/Collab seats, 200 to 600 calls per day on Dev and Full seats. Having the assistant write to Figma (beta) requires a Full seat.

What does Figma MCP do?
Figma MCP lets the assistant look at a design in Figma and read its components, color and font variables, layout and screenshot, so when you say "turn this frame into code" you don't have to give measurements by hand. In the other direction, the assistant can also draw designs into a Figma file. MCP is the standard that lets AI programs connect to outside services.
The call limit depends on your Figma plan and seat type; writing to Figma requires a Full seat.
Who it helps: developers and designers who prepare designs in Figma and code them with an assistant. If you don't use Figma, it is of no use to you.
How do you connect Figma MCP?
The recommended route is Figma's remote server: https://mcp.figma.com/mcp. When you connect, you are asked to authorize your Figma account. The commands are taken verbatim from the official Figma documentation.
- In claude.ai or Claude Desktop, click the + button under Customize then Connectors and find Figma in the directory (maker: Figma, "Anthropic verified").
- Click Connect or Install, follow the prompts and allow access in Figma.
- In each chat, turn Figma on under + (or /) › Connectors.
- On a team account, an Owner or Primary Owner first enables it via Organization settings then Connectors then Browse connectors › Figma › Add to your team; each person then connects with their own Figma account.
› claude plugin install figma@claude-plugins-official› claude mcp add --transport http figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp› claude mcp add --scope user --transport http figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp- Restart Claude Code, type
/mcp, select figma and click Authenticate; on the page that opens, click "Allow access". - If your organization blocks plugin installation, the plugin won't install; contact your Claude administrator.
- In the Codex app, top left: Plugins › the + next to Figma › Install Figma › Allow access.
› codex mcp add figma --url https://mcp.figma.com/mcp› /add-plugin figmaFor a manual setup, add a new global server under Cursor Settings then MCP and write a figma entry under mcpServers with url: https://mcp.figma.com/mcp.
VS Code: open the mcp.json file from the command palette with "MCP: Open User Configuration"; add a figma entry under servers with type: http and url: https://mcp.figma.com/mcp, click Start above the server name and choose "Allow Access". To use MCP in VS Code, GitHub Copilot must be enabled on your account.
› gemini extensions install https://github.com/figma/mcp-server-guideIn Gemini CLI, then type /mcp auth figma. For Xcode 27 beta, the Figma plugin installs in one click (details in the documentation).
- Update the Figma desktop app, open a Design file, switch to Dev Mode (Shift D) and click "Enable desktop MCP server" in the MCP server section of the inspect panel.
- The server runs on your computer at
http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp.
The desktop server requires a Dev or Full seat on all paid plans, and it lacks the remote server's write-to-Figma tools (use_figma, generate_figma_design). If you set up both, keep their names separate (figma and figma-desktop).
Which programs does Figma MCP work in?
| Claude (web and desktop)Yes | Listed in the connector directory; connect under Customize then Connectors. |
|---|---|
| Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS CodeYes | Figma's developer documentation has setup tabs for each. |
| Gemini CLI, Xcode 27 beta, Copilot CLIYes | Listed in the Figma Help Center table and in the documentation. |
| ChatGPTUnclear | Figma's MCP catalog lists ChatGPT; there is no separate Figma setup document for ChatGPT. |
Figma says only clients listed in its MCP catalog can connect to the remote server. The client lists on three Figma pages differ from each other. "Not in the documentation" does not mean it doesn't work.
What does Figma MCP access, and where does your data go?
The contents of Figma Design, FigJam, Make and Slides files you have access to: layer structure, design context, variables, screenshots, libraries and Code Connect mappings. It only accesses files you have permission for.
The write-to-canvas tool creates, edits and can delete pages, frames, components and variables in files; no tool that deletes the file itself is listed in the documentation. Writing comes with a Full seat requirement and a beta warning.
The design data read goes to the AI client you use and its model provider. The official pages don't clarify whether Figma uses MCP data for model training.
On Claude Team and Enterprise, the Owner enables the connector and can set read and write tools to "Always allow", "Needs approval" or "Blocked" under Customize then Connectors then Figma then Tool permissions. Enterprise single sign-on (Okta) is available on Organization and Enterprise plans.
!This information is compiled from official documentation; it is not a security audit. Check the status of registered security advisories on GitHub and OSV separately. The Claude directory recommends using connectors only from developers you trust.
Is Figma MCP free? Call limits and seats
The Figma MCP server has no separate fee; access depends on your Figma plan and seat type, and your usage allowance is measured by a call limit. Plan and seat prices are not covered in this guide; see Figma's pricing page.
| Plan | View and Collab seat | Dev and Full seat |
|---|---|---|
| Starter (free) | 20 calls per month | 20 calls per month |
| Professional | 20 calls per month | 200 per day, 10 per minute |
| Organization | 20 calls per month | 200 per day, 15 per minute |
| Enterprise | 20 calls per month | 600 per day, 20 per minute |
Education plans have the same limits as Professional Dev and Full seats. The limits apply to Figma's read tools; some tools that write to a file (add_code_connect_map, create_new_file, whoami) are exempt. Figma reserves the right to change the limits.
!The README in Figma's GitHub repository says 6 calls per month; the developer documentation says 20 per month. This guide uses the developer documentation figure; if you get close to the limit on your own account, tell your assistant "run whoami" and it shows your plan and seat.

Common problems and fixes
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| The use_figma or generate_figma_design tool isn't in the list | Both exist only on the remote server. Confirm the remote server is set up; if there is also a desktop server entry (127.0.0.1:3845) next to it, remove it. |
| I can't see the Figma skills (figma-use) | Install the Figma plugin, or download the skills from the github.com/figma/mcp-server-guide repository and put them in your assistant's skills folder. |
| The result isn't what I expected | Make sure the figma-use skill is installed. Figma notes that the write feature is in beta and may need manual fixes. |
| Gray boxes appear where images should be | The write-to-canvas tool doesn't support images yet; upload and place the image separately, or add it by hand. |
| "Resource not accessible" permission error | Check that the link is a valid Figma file and that you have access to it; use whoami to see which account you are signed in with. |
| I hit the rate limit | The Starter plan and View/Collab seats get 20 calls per month. Fix: move to a Full or Dev seat on a Professional, Organization or Enterprise plan. |
| The tool is slow or errors on a large frame | Narrow the selection to a component or section. |
| In Claude, I get only a description instead of a screenshot | The Claude directory lists this as a known limitation; no fix date is given. |
How do you disconnect Figma?
- In Claude: Select Figma under Customize then Connectors and disconnect. Turning it off for the team is up to the Owner (Organization settings then Connectors).
- In Claude Code:
claude mcp remove figma; if you installed the plugin, manage it from/plugin. - In Gemini CLI:
gemini extensions uninstall figma. - Desktop server: Disable it in the MCP server section in Dev Mode; delete the 127.0.0.1:3845 entry in your client.
The official documentation doesn't include a step for revoking the authorization granted on the Figma account side; to check, look at your Figma account security settings.
What can Figma MCP read and write?
The list below is compiled from Figma's developer documentation. Check which task works under which condition.
| Task | Condition |
|---|---|
| Design to code: reading components, variables, layout, screenshots | Remote server on every plan; call limit by seat (see below) |
| Writing designs to a Figma file (frames, components, variables, auto layout) | Requires a Full seat; Dev seats are read-only. Beta: Figma says it will become usage-based paid in the future |
| Drawing FigJam diagrams (flowchart, Gantt, state, sequence, architecture, ERD) | The official pages don't clearly say which plans include it |
| Bringing a running web interface into Figma | Selected clients only; Claude Desktop is not on this tool's list |
| Code Connect: mapping components to their counterparts in code | Organization or Enterprise plan; components must be published in a team library |
| Generating images | Each image uses Figma AI credits |
!The write feature is in beta. Figma recommends trying it on a copy of a production file first and keeping a backup; the output may need manual fixes. use_figma doesn't support images yet.
The Figma page in Claude's connector directory lists nine tools and says get_screenshot returns only a description of the screenshot in Claude and Claude Code; the Figma documentation gives a broader tool list. Which tools appear in Claude may vary with the setup route.
