What is Graphify? Mapping your project as a knowledge graph for Claude Code: setup, pricing and privacy
You type /graphify . in your coding assistant; Graphify turns the code, documents, PDFs and images in the folder into a knowledge graph and produces three files: an interactive map, a report and the graph data. In later sessions the assistant queries the graph instead of reading files one by one. Code files are parsed on your computer without any AI call; documents, PDFs and images go to your assistant's model or to the API provider you choose. It is an open-source (Apache-2.0) command-line tool, free, with no account required; the package name is spelled with two y's: graphifyy.

What does Graphify do?
In a large project, coding assistants find their way by reading files from scratch every time; that is slow and burns a lot of tokens. Graphify maps the project once: it records relationships such as which function calls what and which document relates to which code as a graph (a network of nodes and links). The assistant then queries this graph instead of reading files.
You need a terminal: setup is done from the command line, and the best results come with a coding assistant (such as Claude Code or Cursor). If you don't want to use the command line, Graphify Labs' separate cloud product, Graphify Cloud, connects repositories through the web and offers PR reviews; that product has different pricing (below).
Who it helps: developers working with an assistant on a medium or large code project who are tired of the assistant constantly reading files and using up their quota. It won't help on a small project or if you don't write code.
The official site shows figures like "70x fewer tokens"; the site's own text says these come from a user quote and that Graphify did not run these numbers. No independent measurement source is given.
How to install Graphify
You need Python 3.10 or later and uv (or pipx). The package name is graphifyy (two y's); the command is graphify. Other projects with graphify in their name (such as graphify.net) do not belong to Graphify Labs. The commands are taken verbatim from the official README and documentation.
› winget install astral-sh.uv› uv tool install graphifyy› graphify installThe README says graphify install --platform windows on Windows; the Claude Code page in the docs says --platform claude (inconsistent with each other). If the graphify command isn't found, type uv tool update-shell and open a new terminal.
› brew install python@3.12 uv› uv tool install graphifyy› graphify installOn Linux you can use curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh for uv, or pipx (pipx install graphifyy). To verify the install: graphify --version.
› graphify install --platform claude› graphify claude install- Open the project in Claude Code and type
/graphify .. - To ask from the terminal:
graphify query "authentication flow".
!Back up your ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md file before installing: Reported by users an open GitHub issue (#3791) reports that reinstalling can delete the content after the "# graphify" block in this file.
› graphify install --platform cursor› graphify install --platform codex› graphify install --platform gemini› graphify vscode install› graphify extract . --code-only› graphify query "entry points"Optional extras are installed separately: uv tool install "graphifyy[pdf]" for PDF, [office] for Word and Excel, [video] for video and audio, [ollama] for local Ollama, [mcp] for MCP.
How to use Graphify
Assistant commands (/graphify) are typed in the assistant's chat box, not in the shell. Shell commands (graphify extract, query, path) are typed in the terminal.
| Command (in the terminal) | What it does |
|---|---|
| graphify extract . --code-only | Maps only the code, without a model or key. |
| graphify query "<question>" | Returns the relevant nodes and links in the graph for the question. |
| graphify path "A" "B" | Finds the shortest path between two concepts. |
| graphify explain "concept" | Shows a concept's source and relationships. |
| graphify update . | Refreshes changed code files (the code refresh uses no AI). |
| graphify watch . | Watches for changes and refreshes (watch extra). |
| graphify hook install | Refreshes on commits and branch switches using git hooks. |
| graphify export <format> | Exports to formats such as html, wiki, obsidian, svg, graphml, neo4j. |
| graphify uninstall [--purge] | Removes the registrations; --purge also deletes the graphify-out/ folder. |
To verify the install, run graphify --version. Generated files are written to the graphify-out/ folder in the project; check their contents before adding them to git (they can contain source text and paths).
Which programs does Graphify work in?
| Claude CodeYes | The docs have a separate setup section (graphify install --platform claude). |
|---|---|
| Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLIYes | The docs give an install command for each; in Codex the command is typed as $graphify. |
| VS Code (Copilot Chat)Yes | The docs give the graphify vscode install command. |
| Other assistantsUnclear | The README and docs give different numbers (16, 17 or more than 20 assistants); see the README for the full list. |
| Local MCP serverYes | With the graphifyy[mcp] extra, it works in MCP clients such as Claude Code, Cursor and Codex. |
"Not in the docs" does not mean it doesn't work. The list is compiled from the Graphify documentation. Windows setup is documented, but some Windows-specific problems have been reported (below).
What does Graphify read and write, and which data leaves your machine?
Code, documents, PDFs, images and audio/video files in the project folder; .gitignore and .graphifyignore are respected.
- A graphify-out/ folder in the project (graph.json, GRAPH_REPORT.md, graph.html and a cache)
- The assistant's skill folder in your user folder, and a short "# graphify" block in ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md
- With the project-scope install (graphify claude install), hooks in the repository's CLAUDE.md file and in .claude/settings.json
The project-scope install adds hooks that run before tool calls to the Claude Code settings file (according to the source code; the settings file is backed up before it is changed). graphify hook install refreshes the graph on git commits and branch switches.
Code files are parsed on your computer and never leave the machine. Documents, PDFs and images go to the assistant's model with /graphify, and with graphify extract to the provider chosen via --backend or by the key in your environment (to servers in China if Kimi is selected). The README says there is no telemetry.
An advisory was published on GitHub (GHSA-pcc4-rvhr-2pr8, high, September 27, 2026): when indexing an untrusted repository, a local file could be read via a Fortran #include; fixed in 0.9.70. An OSV query returns nothing. This is not a security certification.
The README and the docs say different things about whether queries are logged. The official settings documentation says the default is off; check the ~/.cache/graphify-queries.log file on your own machine.
!Adding a document, PDF or image to the graph sends its content to the model. Before adding confidential or client documents, check the data policy of the model you use; to work fully locally, use only --code-only or --backend ollama.

Common problems and fixes
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
The graphify command isn't found | Type uv tool update-shell (with pipx, pipx ensurepath) and open a new terminal. Check that the package you installed is graphifyy. |
pip install graphify installed a different package | The official package is graphifyy (two y's). The other graphify* packages on PyPI do not belong to Graphify Labs. |
| The assistant doesn't see the /graphify skill | Register the right assistant with graphify install --platform <name> and restart the assistant. In Codex, type $graphify. |
I typed /graphify . in the shell and it says the command doesn't exist | /graphify is typed in the assistant chat, not in the shell. From the shell, use graphify extract . --code-only. |
| Answers reflect old code | Run graphify update .. After git pull and merge, a manual refresh is needed. |
| The first build after upgrading takes very long | Many releases upgrade the cache format; the first build re-extracts the files, which is expected behavior. |
| Reported by users Reinstalling deleted the contents of ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md | Open GitHub issue #3791. Back up the file before installing and reinstalling. |
| Reported by users On Windows, every Bash call returns "hook exited with code 1" because of the hook | Reported on hardened Windows machines. Removing the hook with graphify claude uninstall is a way out. |
How to uninstall Graphify
- Remove the registrations:
graphify uninstall(graphify uninstall --purgeto also delete the graphify-out/ folder). - For Claude Code only:
graphify claude uninstallorgraphify uninstall --project --platform claude. - Remove the git hooks:
graphify hook uninstall. - Delete the local MCP entry from the client: In Claude Code,
claude mcp remove graphify(Claude Code's own command). - Remove the package: The install output says
pip uninstall graphifyy; if you installed with uv, uv's own command isuv tool uninstall graphifyy. - Graphify Cloud subscription: Canceled from the Billing page in your workspace; cancellation takes effect at the end of the period.
Frequently asked questions
What is Graphify and what does it do?
An open-source command-line tool that turns a project folder (code, documents, PDFs, images) into a queryable knowledge graph. In later sessions the coding assistant queries the graph instead of reading files one by one.
How do I use Graphify with Claude Code?
Run uv tool install graphifyy and graphify install --platform claude, then open the project in Claude Code and type /graphify . To ask from the terminal there is the graphify query command.
Does Graphify send my code to the internet?
Code files are parsed on your computer and never leave the machine; the README says there is no telemetry. Documents, PDFs and images, however, go to your assistant's model or to the API provider you choose.
Is Graphify free?
The open-source command-line tool is free and requires no account (Apache-2.0). A separate cloud product called Graphify Cloud is offered with Free, Pro and Teams plans; Pro is 15 dollars per month.
Why is the package called graphifyy, with two y's?
The official PyPI package is named graphifyy; the command is graphify. Other projects with graphify in their name (such as graphify.net) do not belong to Graphify Labs. If you type pip install graphify, a different package is installed.
What exactly does graphify install do, and does it add hooks?
The user-scope install writes the assistant's skill and a short CLAUDE.md block. The project-scope install (graphify claude install) also adds tool-call hooks to the repository's CLAUDE.md file and to .claude/settings.json.
Do I need an API key for documents and PDFs?
Not for code alone. For documents, PDFs and images you need your assistant's model or an API provider key (or local Ollama); if no provider is chosen, one is selected based on the keys in your environment.
Does Graphify work on Windows?
The README says macOS, Linux and Windows; for Windows it describes installing uv with winget. Some Windows-specific problems (a hook error, spaces in the user name) have been reported on GitHub.
Does token usage really drop 70x?
Figures on the official site such as 71x and 79x come from a user quote; the site's own text says Graphify did not run these numbers. No independent measurement source is given; test the savings on your own project.
How do I uninstall Graphify?
Use graphify uninstall (add --purge to also delete the graphify-out/ folder), graphify hook uninstall for the git hooks, and remove the package with uv tool uninstall graphifyy.
