What Is Modal? Running Python on Cloud GPUs, Free Credit, Pricing and No-Code Use
With Modal (modal.com) you run Python code on a powerful GPU without installing anything on your own computer, schedule the job, or turn it into a web URL. It is a serverless cloud for AI and data work. The Starter plan is $0 + usage and gives $30 of free credit per month, but a valid payment method on the account is required. Pricing is per second. No-code use is practically nonexistent: the docs work with Python and the command line. This is not a model; it is the infrastructure you run models on.

What is Modal for? Can I use it without code?
This page is about the cloud service at modal.com, not modal windows or modal fabric.
You need a powerful GPU to run an AI model or a heavy data job, but your own computer doesn't have one. You give Modal your Python code; it runs it on a GPU in the cloud, schedules the job every day, or turns it into a web URL. You pay for the seconds it runs.
Practically no. The docs work with Python (JavaScript and Go SDKs are in beta) and the modal run and modal deploy commands. The closest no-code paths: Playground and Notebooks in the browser, and Endpoints in the dashboard. If you only want to use an AI tool without writing code, Modal is not a fit for you.
Who it's for: developers and data scientists who know Python. The Python SDK is Apache-2.0 licensed; the server side is closed and commercial.
How do you get started with Modal?
- Create an account at modal.com/signup with GitHub, Google or SSO.
- With Python 3.10–3.14, run
pip install modal. - Authenticate in the browser with
modal setup; check it withmodal token info. - Run the sample script with
modal run getting_started.py.
› pip install modal && modal setupmodal.com/playground is a no-install playground, and modal.com/notebooks offers GPU-backed notebooks in the browser. Notebook usage is deducted from the $30 monthly credit; the default idle shutdown is 10 minutes.
!The docs state that using Modal requires a payment method on the account, and using GPUs requires a valid payment method. “Free credit” does not mean use without a card. An age limit, phone verification, and card or access restrictions from Turkey are not stated in the official documentation.
