What is Stripe MCP? How to connect it, whether it can refund and cancel, and the API key migration

You ask your assistant about your customers, payments, invoices or subscriptions; Stripe MCP reads the data in your Stripe account and, if you allow it, also performs write actions through the Stripe API such as creating refunds, canceling subscriptions, and creating and finalizing invoices. It is the official remote MCP server hosted by Stripe (address https://mcp.stripe.com); Stripe requires human approval for some actions such as refunds and outbound payments. Authentication uses OAuth or an agent API key with the "Agent" badge; Stripe asks users to migrate their keys by November 30, 2026. You can choose a sandbox for testing. The documentation lists no separate fee for MCP.

What does Stripe MCP do?

MCP is the standard AI programs use to connect to external tools. Stripe MCP offers two groups of tools: ones that talk to the Stripe API, and ones that search Stripe documentation and support articles. stripe_api_read calls any Stripe API GET method (customers, payment intents, invoices, subscriptions, balance, disputes); stripe_api_write calls the POST, PATCH, PUT and DELETE methods.

The tool count differs between two sources: the Claude directory lists 11 tools, while Stripe's own documentation counts 15 (including Treasury, Atlas and get_stripe_account_info). The names differ too; which set appears in which client is not documented.

Who it helps: Businesses and developers who want to ask an assistant about their Stripe data instead of browsing the Dashboard, and have it prepare invoices and payment links.

How do I connect Stripe MCP?

There are two authentication routes: OAuth (on behalf of your own Stripe user account) and an agent API key. The commands are taken verbatim from Stripe's documentation.

Add the official Stripe connector with the "Connect to Claude" button in Stripe's documentation.
Sign in to your Stripe account in the OAuth window that opens; the live account and the sandbox are selected separately, and you can grant different permissions for each environment.
In the chat, turn on Stripe under + › Connectors.
On Team and Enterprise, an Owner must first add the connector to the workspace.

Then type /mcp in Claude Code and sign in to Stripe with OAuth. If you connect with an agent API key, put the key in an environment variable rather than on the command line, and use it with the Authorization: Bearer header.

The route Stripe marks as "Recommended": the command detects the agents you use and installs the Stripe plugin (first run npm install -g @stripe/cli@latest).

For Cursor, add the https://mcp.stripe.com address to ~/.cursor/mcp.json; for VS Code, to .vscode/mcp.json (the documentation also has install buttons).

Stripe: "update your API key authentication by November 30, 2026". Starting in December, Stripe MCP will reject full-access secret keys and restricted keys without the "Agent" label, returning 401. If you connect with a key, create a new agent API key or switch to OAuth.

The local @stripe/mcp package shown on the atlas card (0.3.3, MIT) exists, but the current Stripe MCP documentation describes only the remote server. If your device is managed by IT, the mcp.stripe.com address may need to be allowed.

How do I use Stripe MCP?

Try it with a sandbox account first, and ask it to show what it will do before it sends any write request.

Read"List the payments from the last 30 days in my Stripe sandbox account; show the failed ones and their reasons separately. Do not change anything."

Payment link"In the sandbox, create a payment link for $250 for a "Consulting hour". Show me the parameters before creating it."

Turn on your client's tool approval setting: Stripe recommends this too. Approve every write tool call yourself.

What does Stripe MCP access, and can it refund and cancel?

Deletes

The DELETE method is supported; the only explicit deletion in the documentation's list of supported methods is deleting a coupon. Irreversible actions such as canceling a subscription and voiding an invoice are on the list.

Data

Account data that is read goes to the AI service you use. The documentation does not state the data storage region or retention period.

Stripe requires human approval for some write actions such as refunds and outbound payments: you open the link the agent gives you and approve the request; if it is not approved within 24 hours, it expires. With agent-labeled keys, Dashboard approval rules (a default rule for refunds and subscription cancellations) also apply. The approval you give creates real money movement.

Admin control: A Stripe admin can turn MCP access on or off for the team, separately for live and sandbox (Dashboard › MCP and CLI access settings). Sessions are revoked under Dashboard › user settings › OAuth sessions.

A GitHub Security Advisories query for the stripe/ai repository (MIT) returned nothing; that does not mean the remote service is safe. The full list of OAuth permission names is not on the pages reviewed.

Is Stripe MCP free?

The official documentation lists no separate fee for Stripe MCP. Your Stripe account and transaction fees are a separate matter: see the stripe.com/pricing page. The documentation does not say whether MCP requires a paid plan.

Common problems and fixes

How do I disconnect Stripe MCP?

If you connected with OAuth: Dashboard › user settings › OAuth sessions › client › Revoke access.
If you used an agent API key: Expire the key in the Dashboard.
Admin: Turn off MCP access for the team in settings.
In Claude: Disconnect Stripe under Customize then Connectors.

Can Stripe MCP issue refunds or cancel subscriptions on my behalf?

stripe_api_write calls the Stripe API's POST, PATCH, PUT and DELETE methods; the supported list includes creating refunds and canceling subscriptions. Stripe requires human approval for actions such as refunds and outbound payments. An action you approve creates real money movement; try it in a sandbox first and turn on your client's tool approval setting.

Can I connect with a restricted API key?

For the key route, Stripe requires an agent API key (a restricted key with the Agent badge). From December 2026, restricted keys without the Agent label and full-access secret keys will be rejected; the migration deadline is November 30, 2026.

Can I try it in test mode?

In a Stripe sandbox, payments are not processed by the card networks. In MCP, the live account and the sandbox are selected separately during OAuth; admins also manage the two separately.

Is Stripe MCP free?

The documentation lists no separate fee for MCP. Terms for your Stripe account and transaction fees are on the stripe.com/pricing page.

Can it be used from Turkey?

Turkey is not on Stripe's country list (stripe.com/global); Stripe's official pages show no separate statement about Turkey. Confirm with Stripe whether you can open an account.
