What Is Zapier MCP? Setup, Task Quota, Free Plan and Permissions

You give your assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and the like) a job; Zapier MCP searches and takes actions in the apps connected to Zapier (Zapier says more than 9,000 apps): it sends emails, creates tasks, updates records. It is Zapier's service; there is no separate MCP fee and it is included in every plan, but each successful tool call deducts 2 tasks from the plan's task quota, while failed calls deduct nothing. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month, which works out to about 50 calls (100 divided by 2). By default the assistant decides which actions are enabled; you take control in "managed" mode.

What does Zapier MCP do?

Zapier is an automation service that connects apps to each other. Zapier MCP opens these connections to your AI assistant: the assistant searches the apps connected to your Zapier account (find an email, look up a contact) and takes actions (send a message, create a task, update a record). Reading and writing run through separate meta-tools.

Zapier-connected appsEmail, tasks, records; 9,000+ apps

Each successful call deducts 2 tasks; in "managed" mode you choose the actions.

According to Zapier, MCP is where a job starts once in a chat; work that needs to run continuously is turned into a Zap with a trigger. Zapier's pages give three different action counts (40,000+, 66,000 actions and triggers, 30,000+); the app count is 9,000+ on all of them.

Who it's for: people who want to give their assistant apps like Gmail, Slack, spreadsheets and CRMs through Zapier instead of connecting them one by one.

How do you connect Zapier MCP?

Setup happens inside the assistant; Zapier creates the server itself when you sign in. There is a single connection URL: https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect (Streamable HTTP only; clients that support only SSE cannot connect).

  1. Paste the "Connect to Zapier MCP" prompt from Zapier's documentation into a Claude chat, then click Connect on the Zapier card Claude shows. (Alternative: "Add to Claude" from Claude's connector directory.)
  2. On the Zapier authorization screen, press "Copy prompt" (Continue only becomes available after that), then Continue.
  3. Review the requested access, pick an account if you have more than one Zapier account, and press Allow.
  4. Go back to Claude and paste the prompt you copied; Zapier's onboarding flow runs.

According to Zapier's documentation, all Claude plans (including Free) are supported. On Team and Enterprise, the Owner first enables Zapier in the organization settings, then each member signs in on their own.

The Claude › Customize then Connectors › + path shown on the atlas card is not in Zapier's documentation; Zapier describes the prompt-pasting route. For clients not on the list, there is a long-lived connection token route.

How do you use Zapier MCP?

Once connected, write your request as usual. The assistant first checks which app actions are enabled and enables new ones if needed.

Search"Using Zapier, find emails in Gmail from the last two weeks with "invoice" in the subject and list them with their senders. Don't send or delete anything."
Create tasks"Add the three to-dos from these meeting notes to my task management app with Zapier. Show me the task titles before adding them."

In the default "agent" mode, the assistant finds and enables its tools on its own. If you want to decide which actions are enabled, switch to managed mode in the mcp.zapier.com dashboard. Every call is logged in the dashboard's History tab.

What does Zapier MCP access, and what can it send?

Reads

Data in the apps you connected to Zapier (email, calendar, spreadsheet rows, CRM records and so on); your account's list of enabled actions, connections and saved Zapier skills.

Writes

Write actions in the apps you enabled: sending messages and emails, creating tasks, updating records; server configuration and creating skills; in early access, creating workflows in Zapier.

Deletes

On the Zapier side, removing an action from the server and deleting skills. The official documentation does not list which connected apps have delete actions; each app's own action list applies.

Data

Customer data is stored in AWS US-East 1 (US) and may be processed by listed subprocessors; regional data residency requires an agreement. App credentials stay with Zapier and are not passed to the model. Zapier states SOC 2 Type II compliance.

In the default "agent" mode, the assistant can prepare and enable actions from the connected apps on your account by itself. If you don't want irreversible actions such as sending email, switch to managed mode and enable only the actions you choose. Enterprise customers are excluded from AI training by default; the documentation gives no such assurance for other plans.

On Team and Enterprise, an admin can turn off MCP, restrict users and set a task quota for the workspace. Because the cloud service is closed source, it cannot be checked against security advisory databases; the assurances are Zapier's own statements only. That does not mean "safe".

Is Zapier MCP free, and how many calls do you get?

There is no separate MCP fee; it is included in every Zapier plan. But each successful tool call deducts 2 tasks from the plan's task quota; failed calls deduct nothing, while test calls do count. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month, which comes to about 50 successful calls (100 divided by 2). When the quota runs out: if pay-per-task is on, calls continue up to a set cap and the excess is billed; if it is off, calls stop until the end of the billing period.

Free$0 /month
  • 100 tasks a month (about 50 MCP calls)

Professionalfrom $19.99 /month
  • Higher task quota
  • Pay-per-task option
Teamfrom $69 /month

Prices are from Zapier's pricing page, in US dollars; the page has a monthly/yearly toggle and the text doesn't say which one is shown. The documentation does not say, app by app, which apps work with MCP on the free plan. This is not financial advice.

Common problems and fixes

What happensWhat to do
The client shows McpAuthorizationErrorUsually an app connection has expired: on mcp.zapier.com, reconnect it with "Update authentication" from the menu next to the app.
Tools I added don't show up in the clientThe client may have cached the old tool list: press Refresh in ChatGPT, quit and reopen Claude Desktop, reload the window in Cursor/VS Code.
A tool works the first time, then fails later in the same chatStart a new chat; if it persists, disconnect and reconnect.
"You've reached your task limit" errorThe monthly quota is used up: wait for the period to reset, upgrade your plan or turn on pay-per-task billing.

How do you disconnect Zapier MCP?

  1. In the assistant: remove the connector in Claude; delete the plugin in ChatGPT; delete the MCP entry in Cursor and VS Code.
  2. In the Zapier dashboard: on mcp.zapier.com you can select and delete the server or remove actions one by one; deleting the server also deletes its logs, and tasks already used still count toward that period's usage.
  3. App permissions: remove connected app permissions such as Gmail and Slack separately from the app connections page of your Zapier account; the documentation does not say that deleting the server removes them automatically.
