What Is Composio? Connecting Apps to Claude Code and Codex, Setup, Free Plan and Data
You connect app accounts such as Gmail, Slack, GitHub, Notion and Linear to Composio; your AI assistant then takes actions in these apps, while Composio handles account connection (OAuth) and permissions. It's used as a command-line tool in the terminal, as a plugin for Claude Code and Codex, and as a hosted URL for MCP clients. The free Hobby plan doesn't require a card; it includes 100,000 tool calls per month, and for OAuth apps managed by Composio itself that allowance drops to 20,000. Actions on the accounts you connect pass through Composio's servers, and call logs are kept for up to one year.

What Is Composio Used For?
To let an assistant use your Gmail or Slack, you'd have to set up authorization separately for each app. Composio takes this on: you connect your account once, and the assistant does things like "send a message on Slack," "open an issue in Linear" or "add an event to the calendar" on your behalf. The official pages give different numbers for how many apps it supports, such as 1,000+, 1,500+ and 1,600+.
Who it's for: developers and advanced users who work with Claude Code or Codex and want the assistant to take actions in outside apps too. Note: these actions make real changes in your account.
How Do You Install Composio?
› curl -fsSL https://composio.dev/install | sh› composio login! This command runs a script downloaded from the internet directly. Read it at https://composio.dev/install before running it. The script writes the PATH setting to your shell files and installs the plugin for any Claude Code and Codex it detects without asking; if you don't want that, put COMPOSIO_INSTALL_SHELL=none COMPOSIO_INSTALL_PLUGINS=0 in front of the command.
On Windows it only works inside WSL. The install script needs curl and unzip; it won't install if the SHA-256 doesn't match.
› /plugin marketplace add ComposioHQ/composio-plugin-cc› /plugin install composio@composioThen restart Claude Code or type /reload-plugins. On the first request, the plugin offers to install the CLI and sign you in. To connect an app in advance, type /composio-connect linear.
› composio login› composio setup --target codex- Claude: + › Connectors › Add custom connector; name it Composio, with the URL
https://connect.composio.dev/mcp. Sign in to Composio in the window that opens. - ChatGPT: Developer mode must be on (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu); enter the same URL when adding a new plugin on the Plugins page.
- Some clients require an
x-consumer-api-keyheader; you get the key from the Composio dashboard, and don't paste it into the chat.
How Do You Use Composio?
If the plugin is installed, you write a normal request to the assistant; if needed, the assistant installs the CLI, has you sign in and gives you an authorization link for the app (the link is valid for 10 minutes).
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| composio search | Searches app tools |
| composio link <app> | Connects an app account |
| composio execute | Runs a tool |
| composio run | Runs a script locally |
| composio upgrade | Updates the CLI |
No separate approval step for write actions is documented on the Composio side. Saying "show it to me before sending" and keeping Claude Code's permission prompts on is a good precaution.
Which Programs Does Composio Work With?
| Claude CodeYes | Plugin and CLI installation are in the documentation. |
|---|---|
| CodexYes | With composio setup --target codex. |
| Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clientsYes | The documentation describes connecting with the MCP URL; some require a key header. |
| WindowsPartly | The install script only works inside WSL. |
"Not in the documentation" doesn't mean it doesn't work.
What Does Composio Access, and Where Does My Data Go?
It can read email, calendar, message, document and repository data in the apps you connect, and it performs actions such as sending messages, opening issues and adding events in the connected account. The documentation doesn't provide a separate list of deletions.
Tool calls pass through Composio's servers. The request and response data of every call is logged by default and kept for up to one year; your account keys are stored encrypted. Zero data retention is offered on paid plans for an extra fee.
The ~/.composio folder (credentials and settings), ~/.local/bin/composio and a PATH block in your shell file.
The Claude Code plugin includes two hooks. One adds context at the start of a session and updates the plugin on its own at most once a day.
No recorded advisories affecting the current CLI and SDK versions appear; there are records for the old Python packages (composio, composio-core). This doesn't mean it's safe.
!Before connecting customers' emails and documents, check your organization's data rules and your KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law) obligations. This is not legal advice.

How Do You Uninstall Composio?

- Claude Desktop connector: ⋮ › Disconnect › Remove.
- CLI: Run the commands in the "Uninstall" section of the CLI documentation and delete the "# Composio CLI" block from your shell files. To delete your credentials too, delete the ~/.composio folder (this can't be undone).
