What is Google Opal? It shuts down November 17, 2026: does it work in Turkey, and what should you use instead?

You describe what you want to Opal in a sentence; it chains text, image and web search steps into a "mini AI app", and you edit the flow in a visual editor. It is an experimental, no-code tool from Google Labs. But Google has announced that opal.google.com and the "Gems made by Labs" in Gemini will shut down on November 17, 2026; existing workflows are not migrated automatically. Turkey is not on Google's official country list, and users report access errors from Turkey. Pricing, plans and Turkish support are not stated in official sources.

What does Google Opal do?

You write what you want to do in a plain sentence; Opal builds a small app that takes input from the user, generates something with an AI model and delivers the result as a web page or a Drive spreadsheet. You edit the steps in a visual editor and share the app via a link.

You can copy an app from the ready-made gallery (Remix) and adapt it; gallery apps cannot be edited directly. You can choose the model in the generate step, but the official documentation does not list model names.

This is an experimental tool and it is shutting down. Don't make important work depend on Opal alone.

Is Opal shutting down? Your data and what to use instead

Yes. According to Google's developer FAQ, the experimental Opal service (opal.google.com) and the "Gems made by Labs" in Gemini shut down on November 17, 2026. After that date, active workflows stop working.

  1. Before the shutdown, open your apps on opal.google and copy your prompts.
  2. Your files stay in Drive in the My Drive › Opal folder, and Google says it will not touch them. You can open them in a plain text editor to get the prompt text, but they will not run interactively.
  3. Rebuild the work: Gemini Skills for everyday tasks, Google AI Studio for deeper prototyping. Google says workflows will not migrate automatically and you need to set up new skills or prompts by hand.

Skills only hold instructions; they don't offer a step-by-step app interface. Also, classic Gems in Gemini are being removed from personal accounts in November 2026 and converted to Skills; Labs Gems will not be moved to Skills.

The open-source repositories behind Opal (Breadboard and Opal ADK) become read-only archives after the shutdown; Opal ADK is Apache-2.0 licensed.

Does Opal work in Turkey, and how do you get started?

TurkeyNoTurkey is not on the list of 180 countries and regions in the official FAQ (page updated September 30, 2026). EU countries, the United Kingdom and Greece are not on it either. Turkish press and users have reported a "not available in your country" error.
Price and planUnclearThe official pages list no price, plan, quota or relationship to Google AI plans. The only known requirement is a Google account.
TurkishUnclearOfficial sources do not state Opal's interface or output language; the documentation is in 10 languages and Turkish is not one of them. The version inside Gemini is English-only for now.
Version inside GeminiPartly18+, personal account, Gemini web app only and English; creating and editing only on a computer. Not in the Gemini mobile app.
Phone appNoNot in official sources; a finished app is used or viewed in the phone's browser.
  1. Open opal.google (until November 17, 2026) and sign in with your Google account; on first sign-in a Drive access permission screen appears.
  2. Copy an app from the gallery with Remix, or choose Create New.
  3. Describe the app in the box at the bottom; test it with Preview.

If you get an error from Turkey, don't try to get around it: the country restriction is Google's own rule.

What happens to what I type into Opal?

Model training

Google states that prompts and outputs in Opal are not used to train generative AI models; humans may review a small subset to troubleshoot issues.

Storage

Apps, interactions and uploaded media are kept in the "Opal" folder in your Drive. These files are not deleted at shutdown.

Sharing

Sharing also shares the Drive file; if you allow editor view, your prompts are visible. When you remove sharing, the link returns an error.

Where the data goes

Data goes to Google; the official page has no separate statement for Turkey or KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law). There is no Opal-specific page on commercial use; Google's Terms of Service say your content remains yours. This is not legal advice.
