What Is Notion MCP? How to Connect It to Claude, Is It Free, and What Can It Delete?
You ask your assistant about a page or database in Notion; Notion MCP searches and reads your workspace with your permissions, and creates and edits pages and databases. It's the official remote MCP server hosted by Notion (address https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, connects via OAuth). The developer documentation lists about 40 tools; the Claude directory shows a subset of them. There are deletion tools, but they move pages to the trash and can be undone. The hosted version has no read-only mode. The documentation lists no separate fee for the connector itself; AI search and connected sources require Business/Enterprise and Notion AI.

What is Notion MCP for?
MCP is the standard for AI programs to connect to outside tools. With Notion MCP, the assistant searches your workspace, reads pages and databases, creates new pages and databases, edits content and writes comments. All of it happens with your Notion permissions: the assistant can't see a page you can't see, and can't edit what you can't edit.
Deleting moves the page to the trash and can be undone; the hosted version has no read-only mode.
Number of tools: the Notion developer documentation lists about 40 tools; the Claude directory shows a 13-tool list. They're different surfaces, so don't take the catalog's 13 as the full list.
Who it's for: people who want to search and update their notes, project pages and databases with an assistant.
How do you connect Notion MCP?
The connection is set up with OAuth: the client sends you to Notion and you approve which workspace it can access. The commands are taken verbatim from the Notion developer documentation.
Notion is listed in the Claude directory as a connector "made by Notion" (added with "Add to Claude"). Notion's developer docs give no menu steps for the Claude interface; look in the Connectors section of the settings.
› claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcpThen type /mcp inside Claude Code and complete authentication for Notion.
Add this to your config.toml file: [mcp_servers.notion] and under it url = "https://mcp.notion.com/mcp". Then sign in:
› codex mcp login notionAdd the address to .cursor/mcp.json in Cursor or .vscode/mcp.json in VS Code (type http in VS Code); then start authentication for Notion in the client.
For clients that don't support remote MCP directly, the docs recommend the npx -y mcp-remote https://mcp.notion.com/mcp bridge.
According to Notion, the old open-source makenotion/notion-mcp-server package (token-based, keyword search) is no longer actively maintained. Use the remote server for new setups.
How do you use Notion MCP?
Once connected, you write your request normally. If you're having it make changes, ask it to show what it will do first.
!Notion warns: treat tool output as untrusted data and ask for approval before changes. Your client may send Notion content outside Notion. A hidden instruction planted in a page in the workspace may try to steer the assistant.
Which clients does Notion MCP work in?
| Claude (from the directory)Yes | Official connector added with "Add to Claude". |
|---|---|
| Claude CodeYes | With claude mcp add. |
| CodexYes | With config.toml and codex mcp login. |
| Cursor, VS CodeYes | With an mcp.json file. |
| ChatGPTUnclear | No steps in the Notion docs. |
| Non-interactive environments (automation)No | OAuth requires interaction; token-based authentication isn't available yet. |
What does Notion MCP access, and what can it delete?
Pages, databases and comments you can see; Notion search and (on higher plans) search across connected sources.
Creating pages and databases, editing content, writing comments and adding reactions. All with your write permissions.
notion-delete-pages and notion-delete-databases (up to 20 per call) move items to the trash and require user_confirmed: true; they're undone with notion-restore-pages. No permanent-deletion tool is documented.
Notion content read by the assistant goes to the AI service you use.
!The hosted version has no read-only mode (feature request #364 is open). For work that doesn't need writing, keep per-tool approval on in your client. No advisories appear in the GitHub Security Advisories list; that doesn't mean "safe".
Admins (Enterprise): under Settings then Connections then Permissions then AI apps, set "Restrict AI apps members can connect" to "Only from approved list" to allow only approved apps; "Disconnect All Users" disconnects all users. The help page and the developer documentation don't say the same thing about revoking previously issued tokens; admins should verify this on their own screen.
Is Notion MCP free?
The documentation lists no separate fee for the connector itself. There's also no explicit sentence saying "it works on the Free plan". According to the documentation, some features require a higher plan:
| Feature | Plan requirement |
|---|---|
| Reading and writing pages, basic search | No separate plan requirement stated in the docs |
| AI search and connected sources (Slack, email, calendar, Drive, Jira) | Business or Enterprise plan and Notion AI |
| Some filters | Requires "Full Notion MCP"; filters outside your plan are skipped and reported in the response via notices |
File attachment limits are in the docs: for upload by URL, 5 MiB on the free plan and 50 MiB on paid plans; 20 MiB for local upload. For usage terms and quotas, see Notion's official pages. No local-currency pricing.
Common problems
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| Some filters don't work, the response has notices | The filter isn't in your plan; check your plan or search another way. |
| Authentication fails in automation or on a server | OAuth requires interaction; the old token-based open-source package is unmaintained and not recommended. |
| The tool list differs from the directory's | The Claude directory shows a subset; the developer documentation is broader. |
How do you disconnect Notion MCP?
- In the client: Remove the connector in Claude; in Claude Code delete the Notion entry with
/mcpor runclaude mcp remove notion. - Config file: Delete the entry from Codex config.toml and the Cursor and VS Code mcp.json files.
- Admin: On Enterprise, can disconnect everyone with "Disconnect All Users" or list and revoke connections via the Admin API.
The documentation doesn't give the path to the screen where a single user revokes the connection on the Notion side.
Frequently asked questions
Is Notion MCP free?
The documentation lists no separate fee for the connector. AI search and connected sources require a Business or Enterprise plan and Notion AI. There's no explicit sentence in the docs saying it works on the Free plan.
Can Notion MCP delete my pages?
Yes, there are deletion tools; however, they move items to the trash, require user_confirmed and can be undone with notion-restore-pages. No permanent-deletion tool is documented.
Is there a read-only mode?
Not on the hosted server; it's open as a feature request (#364). Keep tool approval on in your client.
Can the old notion-mcp-server package still be used?
Notion says the open-source server is no longer actively maintained. The remote server is recommended for new setups.
Does the assistant see all my pages?
The assistant acts with your Notion permissions; it can't access pages you can't access. The content it reads goes to the AI service you use.
How do I add it to Claude?
Through the Notion connector in the Claude directory, via "Add to Claude". The Notion docs give no menu steps for the Claude interface.
