What is OpenCut for?

OpenCut is a video editor that runs in the browser: it cuts and joins video, lets you edit on a timeline, and adds text, stickers, a blur effect, masks and keyframe animation. It generates auto captions with on-device models in the browser; videos are not uploaded to a server.

Under the terms, personal, educational and commercial use are free; it can be used for client work, there is no watermark, and OpenCut claims no rights over the output. Who it suits: content creators who want quick edits without creating an account.

How do you use OpenCut? Does it work on a phone?

  1. Open opencut.app; there is no account or sign-in.
  2. Drag your video into the editor, edit it on the timeline and export it as MP4.

Projects are stored in the browser's own storage (IndexedDB). If you clear your browser data, the projects are lost; export important work as MP4. If your browser does not support GPU-accelerated rendering, the editor shows a warning.

Browser (opencut.app)YesThe way to use it today. The site says it “works on any platform”.
Desktop appNoThe desktop README says it is “very early, currently it only opens a window”; there is no official downloadable release.
Mobile (iOS, Android)NoThere is no official mobile app. Apps with the same name in the stores (for example an “OpenCut” app on the App Store) appear unrelated to the project.

To run it on your own computer (self-host), the current version, classic, requires Bun; there is no ready-made installer. Note: opencut.app runs the classic version, while the main GitHub repository is a rewrite, and the classic repository says it is “archived, no longer maintained”. The rewrite's site (new.opencut.app) is still empty. An MCP server and a headless mode are planned but not released.

Do auto captions support Turkish? What happens to my data?

Auto captions: TurkishNoThe language list in classic's source code has 9 languages (English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Chinese) and Turkish is not among them. The official sources don't say whether the list on the live site is exactly the same; check the language list in the editor.
Turkish interfaceNoThere is no official Turkish interface; an open issue requests Turkish.

According to the privacy page, files are not uploaded or stored; the project name, thumbnail, date and content stay in the browser. Because the content never reaches a server, it cannot be used for training either.

Caption models

The auto caption models are downloaded to the browser (from Whisper and Hugging Face); the privacy page does not mention this separately.
