What Is Remotion? Making Videos with Code: License and Pricing, Claude Code, Setup, Cloud Rendering and Data

You write the video in React code (or have an agent like Claude Code write it); Remotion renders it as MP4. The source code is available, but it is not open source by the OSI definition. Individuals, teams of up to 3 people in total and nonprofits use it for free; companies with 4 or more people must buy a Company License. You need Node.js on your computer, and code gets written. Agents like Claude Code mostly require a paid subscription.

What does Remotion do? Can I use it without code?

In Remotion you write the video so that every frame is like a React component; timing, text, images and sound are controlled in code. You preview it on a timeline in Remotion Studio, then render it as MP4. Its strongest use is turning the same design with changing data (name, price, product name) into hundreds of videos.

Can I use it without code?

Not directly: you need to write code or have an AI agent write it. With an agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) you can move forward without writing code by saying "make a promo video for a record store," but the agent itself mostly requires a paid subscription.

For captions there are speech-to-text options (local and in-browser are free; OpenAI and ElevenLabs cost the respective API fee). There is no official source on Turkish accuracy or a Turkish interface. Who it helps: Developers who know React, and teams that want to produce videos in bulk or from data.

How do you install Remotion? Rendering in the cloud

  1. Install Node.js or Bun (docs: Node 16+ or Bun 1.0.3+).
  2. Blank project: npx create-video@latest --yes --blank my-video
  3. Go into the folder; optionally add the agent skills: npx remotion skills add.
  4. Start Studio: npm run dev

The docs require macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later; on Linux you need glibc 2.35+, and Alpine and nixOS are not supported. The install page lists no requirements for Windows. No RAM, disk or GPU requirements are listed; a GPU does not speed up most renders. You need no account to use Remotion; a remotion.pro account is only for the Company License.

Cloud rendering runs on AWS Lambda; AWS costs are billed to your own account. Cloud Run is "in alpha and not being actively developed." The Lambda and Cloud Run pages still use the old term "Cloud Rendering Units"; the license FAQ talks about a fee per render.

How do you use Remotion with Claude Code and Codex?

  1. Add: claude plugin marketplace add remotion-dev/claude-code-plugin
  2. Install: claude plugin install remotion@remotion
  3. Restart Claude Code; in a new session in the video folder, type /remotion:remotion-create <your request>.

The Remotion docs say "most coding agents require a paid subscription"; Remotion does not state which plan Claude Code and Codex need. The Remotion MCP has been deprecated, and the /remotion-docs skill is recommended instead. Of the major agents, WebMCP (letting the agent see Studio) works only in Codex.

Is Remotion free? License and pricing

The source code is available, but Remotion itself says it is "source-available, not open source by the OSI definition." Free for: individuals, teams of up to 3 people in total, nonprofits, and evaluation that has not gone into commercial use. Commercial use is also allowed under the free license.

Free$0
  • Individuals, teams of up to 3 people in total
  • Commercial use included
  • No sign-up needed
  • Use by companies of 4 or more people
Creators$25 /month/seat
  • For each person who writes the code, by hand or with an agent
  • Companies not building automation
Automators$0.01 /render, minimum $100/month
  • Automation that triggers renders in code
  • No separate seats needed
Enterprise$500 /month and up
  • Custom terms, signed contract, consulting

The threshold is not "how many people use it" but "total staff": per the license FAQ, in a 20-person company, even if only one person uses Remotion, a Company License is required, and in that case 1 seat ($25/month) is enough. The LICENSE file says "up to 3 employees," while the FAQ and terms frame it by headcount; if unsure, ask Remotion. Government and educational institutions do not count as nonprofits without written permission.

Prices are in US dollars; there is no information on VAT, and payment is via Stripe. Codec patents are not included in the license; Remotion places no rights restrictions on the media you produce.

Telemetry and data

Content

Render output, project code and content are not sent to Remotion; server rendering happens on your own infrastructure, browser rendering in the user's browser. Remotion is not a model.

Telemetry

On the server side it is sent only if a license key is provided, and for successful renders. Browser rendering (web-renderer) sends an event for every render even without a license key, and it cannot be turned off. What is sent: license key, IP address, whether it is a still or a video; in the browser, the domain name as well. No content is sent.

KVKK

Remotion AG is based in Switzerland; there is no statement specific to KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law), while GDPR and the Swiss FADP are cited. An app that uses browser rendering should state in its own privacy notice that end users' IP addresses go to Remotion. There is no account deletion button; deletion is by request under GDPR.
