As I closed out August, I had thirty-plus announcements on my desk. Most of them were noise.
That's exactly why I write this post: every month dozens of "updates" come out, the industry shares all of them with the same excitement, then the month ends and nobody remembers which ones actually changed anything. I filtered this month's releases down to five. I also wrote down why I cut the rest — that part may be even more useful.
It's a long post. But August really was busy, especially on the Google Ads side.
Quick answer: The most important development of August 2026 was Google Ads putting the forced move to AI Max on an official timeline — on August 3, creating new broad match campaigns was shut off, and existing campaigns are being migrated automatically throughout September. Second place goes to the spam update that rolled out August 18–21. On the AI side, the real story wasn't model versions; it was seeing how sharply ChatGPT's source preferences can shift within a single week.
1. Google Ads: AI Max is no longer a choice, it's a timeline
This is by far the most concrete development of the month.
As of August 3, Google shut off creating new campaigns with campaign-level broad match and the legacy automatically created assets (ACA). Existing ones are being migrated to AI Max automatically between September 1 and 30. Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) are next in line in February 2027; after that date, you won't be able to create new DSA ad groups either. [A]
Here's why I'm putting this up front: there's no "new feature" here, there's a handover of control. If you've been keeping keyword selection, match logic and ad copy generation in your own hands, all three move to Google's model at once in September. There's no way to object, either — the announcement doesn't mention an opt-out, and the migration is defined as "automatic."

The brand inclusion/exclusion lists carrying over is good news. Google emphasized it specifically, because in similar migrations last year that's where most of the complaints came from.
What to do: Export the search terms report for the last 90 days before the migration, not during the first week of September. That's your baseline for comparing "what used to come in" after the switch. Accounts that skip this won't be able to find the cause when performance drops in October. On the Google Ads management side, this was the only thing we did this month.
2. The spam update: more noise than impact
It started on August 18 at 12:30 (ET) and finished on August 21 at 04:50. Three days. Global, all languages. [A]
Google described it as a "normal spam update" and didn't publish a new spam policy alongside it — the policy page hasn't changed since December. Tracking tools showed serious volatility, and forums had both "my traffic disappeared" and "an earlier wrongful penalty got fixed" comments at the same time. [B]
Let me be honest here: I think this update has no actionable consequence for most sites.
A spam update is not a core update. If you're not violating a policy, you're not its target. If your rankings moved in the second half of August, the cause is most likely not the spam update but the new model rolling into AI Mode during the same period and reshaping the results page. I read a lot of analyses this month that mixed the two up.
Still, one thing caught my attention: complaints that "niche sites were replaced by big retailers" and "Discover visibility disappeared" formed a recurring pattern. Whether this came from the spam update, I'm not sure. There isn't enough data to say, and I won't speculate.
3. AI Mode's answer layer is getting thicker
On August 14, Google brought Gemini 3.7 Flash to AI Mode. Right now it's only for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, in English. [A] Google's Robby Stein made the announcement on X; no date was given for when it will open to free users.
In my view, that's not the more important part. In the same period, generative UI began rolling out globally inside AI Overviews, in English. [B] In other words, a search result no longer just gives a text summary — depending on your question, it can build its own calculator, interactive table or comparison tool.
What this means: before, a user would search for "loan calculator" and land on your calculator page. Now Google builds the tool itself.
In Turkey: the practical situation is that AI Mode and AI Overviews launched in Turkish in February 2026 [A], but generative UI and Gemini 3.7 are currently English-only. So this month's two developments have a limited effect on accounts in Turkey today. That could change in the coming weeks, not months — Google usually tests these kinds of features in English and then rolls them out fast.
If you have tool-style content (calculators, comparison tables, "which one is right for me" quizzes), stop counting them as traffic sources on their own. That's also why, on the GEO side, the weight of our work has shifted from tool pages to quotable definition and data pages.
4. The month's most instructive data: Reddit getting wiped from ChatGPT
This finding was the most striking thing to come out in August, and almost nobody talked about it.
Between July 18 and August 7, 3.83% of the sources shown by ChatGPT Search were Reddit. In the August 14–17 window, that share fell to 0.52%. An 86.4% drop, in four days. [B] A behavior change on August 8 may explain part of the decline; the cause of the second drop is unknown.
Let me explain why this matters.
For the past two years, the backbone of GEO advice was this: "Show up on Reddit, because AI engines cite Reddit a lot." That advice was correct. And in four days, it largely stopped being true.
The lesson isn't about Reddit. The lesson is this: AI visibility can't be built by leaning on a single platform. A model's source preference changes much faster and much more quietly than an algorithm update. When Google ships a core update, it announces it, gives dates, and it gets discussed. Here, there isn't even an announcement.
In our ChatGPT SEO work we have a rule against piling everything onto a single source type; this month we saw concretely why that rule exists.
There's also a flip side: Similarweb's "The Downstream Impact of AI Visibility" study found that brands recommended by ChatGPT got 2.5 times more visits within seven days than competitors that weren't recommended. [B] But an overlooked detail in the same study is more interesting: 55.9% of AI-influenced visits come not from a direct click but from branded search. In other words, people see your brand in ChatGPT, then go search your name on Google.
That fundamentally changes something on the measurement side. Stop looking for the payoff of AI visibility in the "ChatGPT referral" row in Analytics. Look for it in your branded search volume. Note: the study is based only on US desktop data; mobile isn't included.
5. On the Meta side: measurement quietly narrowed
Meta had two entries in August. On August 4, topping up ad account balances with USDC became available — for most advertisers in Turkey this means nothing right now, so I'll skip it.
The real one is on August 6: the impression_device, hourly stats and frequency_value breakdowns started returning empty for accounts that aren't explicitly included. No error, no warning — the request looks successful, but there's no data. [C]
Changes like this don't get written in capital letters on announcement pages. If you've built reporting automation, your device breakdown or hourly performance report quietly goes blank one morning, and you notice weeks later. On the Meta ad management side, the first job in September should be checking, account by account, whether these breakdowns still come back populated.
The source for this item isn't Meta's own announcement page but a third-party changelog — hence the trust label [C]. Don't act on it without verifying it in your own account.
What was overhyped
I'll write this section every month, because what gets cut tells you as much as what gets picked.
Spam update panic. Half the industry wrote "recovery guides." If you're not violating spam policies, there's nothing to do. If traffic dropped, rule out other causes first.
Gemini 3.7 Flash excitement. Paid subscribers, English only. It had no effect on organic traffic in Turkey this month. Model version numbers carry news value, but not business value.
The "AI traffic is exploding" narrative. Measurements show that AI-driven referrals still make up a small share of total visits. [B] The effect is real, but it doesn't show up in referral traffic — it shows up in branded search. If you measure in the wrong place, you'll never see the effect.
Meta's USDC support. A headline for a week, and that was it.

What I'm watching in September
I'm not making predictions, I'm giving you a watch list:
The September 1–30 AI Max migration. Search term quality and CPC in migrated accounts. The real data will take shape in early October.
Whether generative UI opens up in Turkish. If it does, sites with organic traffic to tool/calculator pages will be affected.
LSA call billing. Starting October 1, Google will charge for missed calls and follow-up calls. [A] If you use Local Services Ads, review your September budget model starting today.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel the AI Max migration?
Google's announcement doesn't mention an opt-out option; the migration is defined as automatic. What you can do is archive your pre-migration data and check your brand exclusion lists.
If the August spam update hit me, how long until I recover?
Google said recovery could take months and that periodic refreshes will continue. But first confirm that it really was this update that hit you — line up the dates with the drop in Search Console.
I built my GEO work on Reddit. What should I do?
Any visibility strategy tied to a single source is fragile. Diversify your source types: industry publications, comparison sites, your own data content and a forum presence should all work together.
How do I measure my AI visibility?
Start not with referral traffic but with the change in your branded search volume. Similarweb's data shows that more than half of AI-influenced visits arrive this way.
If you want to read this month in your own account
Which of the above actually affects your account depends on how the account is structured. If you don't have broad match campaigns in Google Ads, item 1 doesn't concern you. If you don't have tool pages, item 3 barely touches you. If you'd rather read your channels in a single plan instead of chasing these changes one by one, I explained where to start in the digital marketing guide; running the work with a digital marketing agency is also an option.
We'll take 20 minutes to look at where your ad account and your website stand against these changes.
If you want to see the situation in other service areas, each area has its own entry on our services page. You can follow daily developments on the blog.
I explain digital marketing not as a list of channels but as the path a customer walks from an ad to a sale: which channel to start with, what performance marketing means and where the money leaks, plus a checklist you can fill in for your own business.
Starting November 12, 2026, Meta is turning on the "Measure conversions on customer devices" setting in Pixel by default; reported sales may go up, but actual orders won't change.
Out of 80-plus announcements in September 2026, five actually create work for small businesses in Turkey: WhatsApp reply fees, the AI Max migration, the ChatGPT ads dashboard, the Facebook link limit and increasingly blurry SEO data.
