ChatGPT Ads Get a Visual Format and Independent Measurement Partners

Ten. That's how many attribution partners OpenAI named in a single list in the ad announcement it published on October 5: AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, Tenjin, Triple Whale, Northbeam and DV Rockerbox [A]. In Turkey, most companies with a mobile app already use at least one of these names. In other words, you'll now be able to see the results of your ChatGPT ads not in OpenAI's own dashboard, but in the report of a tool you already trust.

The part of the announcement that made the headlines is something else: while you're generating images in ChatGPT, image ads will appear on screen. The press talked about that, which is understandable. But I don't think that's the real news. For now the visual format is US-only, with a handful of advertisers, and it's "a test starting this month." The measurement side, on the other hand, matters to everyone who advertises; and since ads can also be launched from Turkey as of September 24, it applies to us too.

Quick answer: On October 5, 2026, OpenAI added an image ad format to ChatGPT that appears while users generate images (tested in the US first), and opened up measurement of ad results through independent tools such as AppsFlyer, Adjust and LiveRamp. This matters most to e-commerce and app companies thinking about advertising on ChatGPT. The first job is to get cookie consent and your attribution setup ready before you put the pixel on your site.

What happened?

In an announcement titled "Building advertising for the way people use AI," OpenAI revealed three things [A]. BleepingComputer, MediaPost and Unite.AI each reported the same details separately [B]; the date is October 5, though in some outlets the story landed on October 6.

1. A visual ad format. The ad is made up of images showing the product itself, how it's used or the experience it delivers. The first test placement is ChatGPT's image generation screen: when a user asks for an image, the ad is "clearly labeled" and kept separate from the generated image [A]. The test starts in October in the US with a selected group of advertisers. As with its other formats, OpenAI reiterated that ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers.

2. Measurement partners. Alongside its own pixel and Conversions API, it published a partner list split into four groups [A]:

  • Data transfer: Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp. For sending conversions from an existing CRM or data warehouse to ChatGPT Ads.
  • Attribution: the ten companies I listed at the top.
  • Full-funnel measurement: Fospha, Measured, INCRMNTAL.
  • Incrementality: Haus, Measured and WorkMagic; geo-based experiments that answer the question "would this sale have happened anyway without the ad?"

Unite.AI also lists Kantar and Cint for brand lift measurement [B]; OpenAI's own announcement text does not name them.

3. Brand safety pilots. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will assess, in a controlled environment, how OpenAI's brand safety rules are applied, without accessing private conversations [A]. The rule that ads won't appear in sensitive or emotionally vulnerable conversations is also in the text.

The announcement also comes with a few performance figures: 52.7% of one-day view-through conversions happened within the first hour after the impression, and WeightWatchers reported a 15.3% lower acquisition cost compared with paid search [B: OpenAI's claim, as reported by Unite.AI]. These are examples the company picked itself. There's no independent verification, and I wouldn't lean on these numbers when making a decision.

Why does it matter?

Because the biggest obstacle for a new ad channel usually isn't the ad itself; it's that the question "did it work?" goes unanswered. When ChatGPT ads launched as a pilot in the US in February, measurement was limited to what you saw in OpenAI's own dashboard. What we've been used to on Meta and Google for years is the opposite: we verify the numbers not from the platform but from AppsFlyer, GA4 or our own CRM. A platform grading its own homework satisfies no one.

There's one more thing. Having incrementality partners on the list is, I think, the most mature part. Showing an ad to someone who's already searching for your brand in a conversation can mean crediting the ad with a sale that would have come organically. A geo-based experiment can separate the two. Expensive, but possible.

As for the visual format, I have a reservation there. The image generation screen is the moment when users are at their most "creative" and their attention is at its most scattered. People come there to make something, not to buy something. I don't expect this format to perform like traffic that comes with search intent. Maybe I'm wrong; nobody knows until the test results are released.

There are a few more open points, and I'm not filling them in with guesses:

  • No date has been given for when the visual format will open outside the US.
  • OpenAI hasn't specifically said whether the measurement partners work today in self-serve accounts in Turkey. The integrations also need to be enabled on the partner's side.
  • The details in this post are cross-checked across three independent publications.

What changes for your brand?

  • Companies with a mobile app stand to gain the fastest. If you use AppsFlyer or Adjust, you'll be able to see ChatGPT traffic in the same dashboard as your other channels, under the same attribution rules. It may come down to adding one more channel to your app's dashboard; ask your partner whether it has enabled the integration.
  • For an e-commerce brand on Shopify or its own site, the issue is the pixel. OpenAI's pixel adds a parameter called oppref to the URL of the person who clicks the ad and writes it to a first-party cookie named __oppref [C: Kevin Leary's implementation guide, October 4 update]. In Turkey, this is a consent issue. If you load it without putting it behind the cookie banner, you'll run into trouble with the cookie guidelines under KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law).
  • Service businesses (education providers, B2B software, appointment-based businesses) can use the pixel's lead_created and appointment_scheduled events [C]. If your form submissions already go to Meta and Google, adding one more event at the same point is enough.
  • If you're in health, law or finance, nothing changes. Industry restrictions outside the US remain in place; setting up the measurement infrastructure does no harm anyway, but there's no rush.

The one thing to do today: Open your cookie management panel (or your cookie policy) and add OpenAI and the __oppref cookie to the "advertising and measurement" category as a draft. Even if you're not starting ChatGPT ads today, the consent side will be ready on the day you add the pixel. Half an hour of work, without spending a cent.

Frequently asked questions

Will visual ads in ChatGPT show up in Turkey?

Not for now. The test starts in October in the US, with selected advertisers. OpenAI hasn't given a date for other countries.

Can I see ChatGPT ad results in AppsFlyer or Adjust?

OpenAI announced both as attribution partners. But for the integration to work in your account, it also needs to be enabled on the partner's side; there's no separate statement for accounts in Turkey. Asking your own account rep is the quickest route.

Does the OpenAI pixel require cookie consent?

The pixel writes a first-party cookie to the browser to recognize the person who clicked the ad. In Turkey, cookies used for advertising and measurement require explicit consent; the rule you apply to the Meta and Google pixels applies here too.
