5 free Claude Code plugins: Setup, claude-mem, Headroom, Task Observer, OmniRoute

All five are free to download, but in two of them the model usage comes from somewhere. Before you install, know what each one requires.

Short answer

Five open-source plugins that add new capabilities to Claude Code. Claude Code Setup is Anthropic's official plugin: it reads your project, recommends which hooks, skills, subagents and MCPs you should set up, and doesn't change any files. claude-mem gives you memory across sessions; after a 30-day trial, it does the memory work using your Anthropic plan. Headroom compresses long outputs sent to Claude; the savings range from 21% to 57% depending on the task, and are higher for repetitive logs. Task Observer records your recurring corrections and suggests skill updates; nothing changes unless you approve. OmniRoute connects Claude Code to other providers' models and switches to the next one when a limit is reached; the "1.6 billion free tokens a month" is the total of dozens of providers' free tiers, and each requires a separate account and key. DijiKoçum's PDF gives the install commands, what to know about each plugin before installing it, and the install order for 12 industries (October 17, 2026).

  1. Start with Setup.

It doesn't touch any files; it looks at your project and tells you what's missing. Inside Claude Code:

    /plugin install claude-code-setup@claude-plugins-official
    # or: /plugin > Discover > claude-code-setup

    # then ask in plain language:
Which automations do you recommend for this project?
Which hooks should I set up?
  2. Add memory: claude-mem.

After installing, restart Claude Code. Once the trial ends, the memory work is done through your Anthropic plan; watch the usage screen during the first week.

    /plugin marketplace add thedotmack/claude-mem
    /plugin install claude-mem

    # or in the terminal:
    npx claude-mem install

    # if something goes wrong:
    npx claude-mem doctor
  3. Reduce token load: Headroom.

Requires Python 3.10+. Open Claude Code through Headroom every time, and see the savings with headroom savings:

uv tool install --python 3.13 "headroom-ai[all]"
    # or: pip install "headroom-ai[all]"

headroom wrap claude # open it this way every time
headroom doctor # is it working
headroom savings # how many tokens it saved
    headroom unwrap claude # undo
  4. Turn repetition into rules: Task Observer.

Installing it isn't enough; add the activation block from the references/environments.md file to CLAUDE.md, or set up the session-start hook.

npx skills add rebelytics/one-skill-to-rule-them-all --skill task-observer
    # add -g at the end for all projects
  5. If limits are your problem: OmniRoute.

Requires Node 22+. First try it with omniroute run claude without touching your config file. Once connected, Claude Code works with other models instead of Claude; don't send customer data to free providers you don't know.

    npm install -g omniroute
    omniroute
    # dashboard: http://localhost:20128 → add a provider, get a key

    # try Claude Code without touching the config file:
    omniroute run claude --model [provider/model]

How to measure it

After each plugin, have it redo the same small task: time, tokens (headroom savings in Headroom) and how many times you had to explain things from scratch. After a week, remove any plugin where you see no difference.

Frequently asked questions

Are all five really free?

They're free to download and use, and open source. But after the trial, claude-mem does the memory work through your Anthropic plan, and the free usage in OmniRoute comes from each provider's own free tier; some of them require a card.

Can I use Claude without limits with OmniRoute?

No. OmniRoute connects Claude Code to other providers' models (such as GLM and GPT). When a limit is reached, it switches to the next model; so the work doesn't stop, but the answer may not come from Claude.

Does Claude Code Setup change my project?

No. According to Anthropic's own description, it's read-only: it analyzes and gives recommendations. You decide what to install.
