5 Departments for a One-Person Business: Free Claude Skills

There are free skills for marketing, social media, design, finance and legal. The real work isn’t downloading them and leaving them there; it’s having them adapted to your business.

Short answer

A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that tells Claude how to do a job; a plugin installs several skills and commands together. Free resources for five departments: coreyhaines31/marketingskills for marketing, charlie947/social-media-skills for social media, UI UX Pro Max and Taste for design, and Anthropic’s Finance and Legal plugins for finance and legal. All of them are written in English with US examples; telling Claude Code “adapt this to my business” is the key step. The finance and legal plugins are no substitute for an accountant or a lawyer. DijiKoçum’s PDF gives the install commands, first prompts, adaptation prompts and the order for 12 industries.

  1. Read before you install.

    Someone else’s skill is a file that gives Claude instructions. Before installing it, read the SKILL.md or have Claude review it:

    Review this skill folder before I install it: [folder path or repository]
- Does it run any command or script, and what does it do?
- Is there any step that sends data to the internet, deletes files,
  or asks for a password or key?
- Which folders does it write to?
If there is anything risky, show it with the line number and do not install it.

  2. Start with marketing.

    github.com/coreyhaines31/marketingskills: 50 marketing skills. First create your business’s context file with product-marketing; everything else reads it.

  3. Social media and design.

    Social media: github.com/charlie947/social-media-skills; start with your voice profile in voice-builder. Design: UI UX Pro Max and Taste, if you have website or page work.

  4. Finance and legal, when you need them.

    Anthropic’s Finance and Legal plugins (claude.com/plugins). Finance when your income-and-expense sheet is ready at the end of the month; legal when you have a contract to review. Remove personal information before you upload a contract or an invoice.

  5. Have it adapted to you.

    After each installation, give Claude Code the adaptation prompt; use it for a week, then move on to the next one:

    I added new Claude skills to the ~/.claude/skills/ folder. Review all of
them against the way I work, and let’s adapt them to me and my business.
1. For each skill, write: what it does, which of my tasks it matches,
   and which ones are of no use to me at all.
2. Adapt the useful ones: language [your language], examples from my industry,
   currency [your currency], my country’s rules.
3. Show me the plan before changing anything; edit once I approve.
4. Back up the original files to a skills-backup/ folder.

How to measure it

For each department, pick one task a week (e.g. a campaign text, a month-end sheet) and note how long it takes with the skill. Put the output from before and after the adaptation side by side; if your number of corrections goes down, the adaptation worked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a skill and a plugin?

A skill is a single folder with a SKILL.md inside. A plugin installs several skills, commands and connections to external tools together; Finance and Legal come as plugins.

Will the finance plugin do my accounting?

No. It is written in US accounting language (GAAP, SOX); it contains no knowledge of Turkey’s Tax Procedure Law, e-invoices, e-ledgers or VAT (KDV) returns. It is no substitute for your accountant.

Is it free?

The skill files are free. Using Claude requires a paid plan in most cases; Claude Code is available on paid plans.
