How-To Guide · GEO

Plenty of people sell GEO. Few actually do it.

5 tasks you can do yourself this week. No agency needed. The first takes 5 minutes.

Short answer

5 tasks that don't need an agency to get cited as a source in AI answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews): robots.txt, llms.txt, FAQPage schema, a technical foundation and self-contained answers. Measurement: 10 questions once a month.

  1. Check robots.txt

    5 minutes

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot is blocked with 'Disallow: /', you're not among that assistant's sources. The block often comes from an old security or caching plugin. Search bots and training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) are separate decisions.

  2. Publish llms.txt

    30 minutes

A file at the root of your site that describes in plain text what you do and lists your important pages. Note: llms.txt is still a proposed standard (llmstxt.org); which assistants read it is unclear. It's a harmless, quick task.

  3. FAQPage schema

    1-2 hours

Mark up your questions and answers with JSON-LD. Practical rules: the question matches the heading on the page exactly, the answer is 40-60 words, at most 6 questions per page. Since 2023, Google no longer shows the FAQ rich result for most sites; the schema still labels the answer in a form machines can read.

  4. Technical foundation

    varies

Important pages indexed in Search Console, no mobile speed issues, text readable in the HTML, a sitemap.xml in place, a single H1 on every page. Even the best article doesn't get cited on a site that can't be crawled.

  5. Self-contained answers

    ongoing

Put 2-4 sentences under every heading that make sense even when taken out of context. Formula: topic + what it is + who it helps and how. Sentences that start with 'As mentioned above' don't get cited.

How to measure it

Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews the same 10 questions your customers would ask; count the answers that mention your brand. Total ÷ 40 = GEO score.
