What is Photoroom for? Background removal and product photos
Photoroom is an app that makes product photos ready to sell. It removes the photo's background and replaces it with a solid color, a ready-made template or an AI-generated scene. The same app also adds shadows, removes unwanted objects, resizes images to marketplace dimensions and batch-edits many photos at once.
Who it suits: businesses that sell products on marketplaces or Instagram and shoot their products with their own phone. The official description presents it as an e-commerce-focused tool.
The free account is for personal use only. Preparing photos of a product you sell with a free account violates the terms; details are in the “Commercial use” section.
How do you download Photoroom, is it on PC, and how do you create an account?
Search for “Photoroom” on the App Store and tap Get. Requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. On the App Store the app is free with in-app purchases, rated 4+, and available in 29 languages, Turkish included.
Download it from the Mac App Store; it runs only on Macs with M1 or later chips. On older Macs and Windows computers, use the browser version (web app).
Install it from Google Play. Requires Android 10 or later. The help center only describes installing from the Play Store and states that installing from an APK file will not work.
At app.photoroom.com, with no download. Requires an up-to-date 64-bit Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari with WebGL2 support and hardware acceleration turned on. At least 8 GB of memory and at least 512 MB of graphics memory are recommended.
Account: you sign in with email (a magic code is sent), Google, Apple or Facebook; an account is tied to a single email. Age: the Terms say the service is not directed at children under 13. No phone verification or ID requirement is stated. A subscription screen appears on first launch; you can close it with the X at the top right and continue for free.
!If you are looking for a “Photoroom mod APK” or a cracked version: the official sources only describe installing from the Play Store and state that APK installs will not work. The official sources do not address accounts or payments for such versions; the official app already starts with a free account.
Photoroom AI tools: backgrounds, models, shadows, video
AI tools use “AI credits”. Credits are a monthly balance included in your plan; each generation deducts credits depending on the tool. Background removal, retouching, preset shadows, resizing and sharpening (Image Enhancer) use no credits; these are called “core tools”.
| Tool | What it does (per Photoroom) |
|---|---|
| AI Backgrounds | Generates a new background from your description or a ready-made theme; you can also give a visual example (Image Guidance). |
| AI Shadows | Adds a realistic soft, hard or floating shadow to the product. Presets use no credits; detailed settings use credits and are web-only. |
| AI Fashion Models, Ghost Mannequin, Flat Lay, Ironing | Shows clothing on an AI model, a ghost mannequin or a flat lay; reduces wrinkles. |
| Product Staging, Product Beautifier, Studio Shot, AI Scenes | Shows the product in a realistic scene or on a plain studio backdrop. |
| Edit with AI, Create any image | Changes an image from a text description or generates an image from scratch. |
| Video Generator | Makes a short video from a product photo. According to the pricing page, not included in Pro. |
In some tools (AI Fashion Models, Ghost Mannequin, Flat Lay, Product Staging, Product Beautifier, Ironing), Photoroom compares the generated image with the original photo. If it deviates too much, a “Fidelity Check” label appears on the image; you either accept the area or have it redrawn based on the original (“Fix it”, uses no credits). According to the help article, this check requires a paid subscription.
!If you don't like a generation result, you can report it with “Bad result” from the image menu; Photoroom may refund the credits, but it is not guaranteed and there is a limit of 20 a day. AI Backgrounds, AI Shadows, Image Enhancer, AI Expand, Retouch, Studio Shot and the batch tools are not eligible for refunds.
How do you use Photoroom? Background removal, object removal, AI backgrounds
Tool names and screen locations vary by platform (mobile and web have different interfaces). The order below follows the tool names in the official help articles.
- Upload the photo. Start a new design in the app and choose your product photo. For many products there is also a separate batch editing (Batch) section.
- Remove the background. When Photoroom removes the background, the product becomes a separate layer. The background removal tool (Background Remover) can also be opened from the AI tools menu.
- Choose a new backdrop. Use transparent, a solid color, a ready-made template, your own photo or a scene generated with AI Backgrounds.
- Add shadows and fixes. Shadows with AI Shadows, removing unwanted objects or adding new ones with Retouch, dimensions with Resize.
- Export. Every image you save or share counts as 1 export; it is deducted from your monthly quota.
Since every generation uses credits, first clean up the product with credit-free core tools such as background removal, then run the AI tool.
Marketplace listing sizes and batch editing
Photoroom's help article suggests opening a blank canvas (Blank), entering the width and height you want in pixels, and then exporting.
| Marketplace | Size recommended by Photoroom |
|---|---|
| eBay | 1600 × 1600 pixels |
| Etsy | 2000 × 2000 pixels (listing), 500 × 500 (seller photo) |
| Poshmark | 1080 × 1080 pixels |
| Depop | 1280 × 1280 pixels |
| Trendyol, Hepsiburada (Turkish marketplaces), Amazon | The official sources give no size; check the image rules in the seller panel and enter the same size on a blank canvas. |
Batch editing (Batch): you upload several photos and apply a background, size and logo to all of them at once; you can spread a change made on one photo to the others with “Apply to all”. In batch editing, each image counts as a separate export: downloading 10 images means 10 exports. The batch tools include AI Shot List, Recolor, Product Staging, AI Fashion Models, Edit with AI, Flat Lay, Ghost Mannequin, Ironing and AI Scenes.
!If you choose AI Backgrounds as the background in batch editing, Photoroom does not reuse the same background but generates a new one with the same prompt; the images may come out slightly different from each other. Photos uploaded to batch editing now arrive without automatic background removal (they keep their original background); you apply the new background or template yourself.
Export resolution limits
| Platform | Free | Paid (Pro, Max, Ultra) | Batch editing |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | 2400 × 2400 | 4032 × 4032 (selected in settings) | Not stated |
| Android | 4032 × 4032 | 4032 × 4032 | 2000 × 2000 |
| Web | 2000 × 2000 | 4096 × 4096 | 2048 × 2048 |
Export resolution does not upscale a low-resolution photo you upload; the official article states this explicitly. The import limit is 2400 or 4032 pixels on iPhone, 2000 on Android and 4032 on the web (2000 in batch editing). Supported formats: JPG, PNG, WebP; the web also exports AVIF.
Which model? AI Backgrounds models and their differences
In Photoroom, you choose the model only in the AI Backgrounds tool (the “AI Model” setting). Other tools have no model choice. Newer models are higher quality and slower; older ones are fast but lower resolution.
| Model | Photoroom's description | Speed | Which plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio HD (newest) | 1024 × 1024, highest quality; currently on the web | ~10 seconds | The help article says Max only; the pricing page also gives a generation count for Pro |
| Studio | 512 × 512; default on the web for Free and Pro | ~5 seconds | Free, Pro, Max |
| v3 | 350 × 350; default on iPhone and Android | Under 1 second | Free, Pro, Max |
| v2 (oldest) | 350 × 350; not the default anywhere | Under 1 second | Free, Pro, Max |
For quick tests, v3 or Studio; for social media or listing images, the higher-resolution Studio HD. Older models use fewer credits.
When you open AI Backgrounds, choose a model from the list under the “AI Model” option.
Checked on October 14, 2026. Photoroom states that it may add new models and remove old ones over time.
Can Photoroom be used with Shopify, an API and Claude?
Photoroom's Claude connector brings the API's features into the Claude chat: background removal, Product Beautifier, Virtual Model, Flat Lay, Ghost Mannequin and image-to-video. API and MCP usage is deducted not from the app's AI credits but from a separate API/MCP wallet; every paid plan includes an API wallet worth the plan price.
› https://mcp.photoroom.com/mcp- On app.photoroom.com, make sure the API is enabled in your Space and that you are an admin.
- In claude.ai › Settings then Connectors, add a custom connector named Photoroom with the address above.
- Click Connect; if needed, you are redirected to the Photoroom sign-in.
A personal Claude account needs a paid plan (official article: not free). There is a separate guide for Claude team and enterprise accounts.
Is Photoroom free? Pro, Max and Ultra pricing, limits and credits
The app is a free download and there is a free account plan. The free plan has limited features, few AI credits and no API; the number of credits given to a free account is not stated in the official documentation. Photoroom sells a separate plan for each “Space” (workspace); a subscription applies only to the Space it was purchased for.

!In-app prices on the App Store and Google Play are set per country by the store, and the in-app purchase list does not say which item is weekly, monthly or yearly. Reported by users reviews describe the largest Pro and Max items as their yearly charges. On the web, prices are shown in US dollars; the official sources don't separately cover paying on the web by card from Turkey.
Prices include VAT (official page). On the web you pay by credit/debit card (Stripe); on mobile with your App Store or Google Play payment method. Weekly billing is available only on mobile. There is no lifetime subscription; Pro and Max offer a 7-day trial on yearly billing, once per customer.
Export means every image you download, save, share or send to Shopify (1 per image in batch editing). Monthly quota: Free 100 (25 a week), Pro 1,000, Max 3,000, Ultra 10,000; Ultra at the 2×, 5× and 10× tiers 20,000, 50,000, 100,000. When the quota is used up, exports stop until the next reset or a plan upgrade; on a yearly plan the reset is also monthly. AI credits are used for AI generation; they renew up to the quota, and the credit amount may vary by country. In a free Space, core tools also have a daily usage limit.
View as a table: maximum generations with credits
| Tool | Pro | Max | Ultra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video generator | No | Up to 50 | Up to 150 |
| AI Fashion Models 1K | Up to 1,600 | Up to 5,000 | Up to 15,000 |
| AI Backgrounds Studio (basic) | 4,000 | 12,500 | 37,500 |
| AI Images | Up to 1,600 | Up to 5,000 | Up to 15,000 |
| Edit with AI | Up to 400 | Up to 1,250 | Up to 3,750 |
The numbers are the maximum generations if you spend all your credits on a single tool (pricing page). The pricing page contradicts itself between the plan cards and the credit table: the cards list adjustable AI shadows as “not included” on all three plans, while the table gives up to 800 generations for Pro.
The trial is only on yearly Pro and Max, given once to a new customer, and applies to the first Space you upgrade; a second Space is charged immediately. Even if you cancel the trial, it counts as used. If you don't cancel, the yearly fee is charged on day 8. A student or education discount is not mentioned in the official documentation or help center. You can use the free account personally or ask support.

What happens to my photos and data? Opting out of AI training
By default, Photoroom uses the designs you make in the app to train its AI. To turn this off, switch off “Improve model for everyone” under Manage account › Data control on mobile or Preferences then Your profile on the web. The terms say turning it off may limit the service in some cases. Images processed through the API are not used for training.
The prompts you write are stored with an anonymized user ID and the generated images. Photoroom says it reviews them to identify use cases and improvement priorities, not to train its AI.
The images you upload are not sold or shared with third parties. However, some generated images may be shown to other users in the app as examples; if you have confidentiality requirements, tell Photoroom.
The privacy policy is written under Europe's GDPR rules; it does not mention Turkey or KVKK (Turkey's Personal Data Protection Law). Data protection officer: privacy@photoroom.com. Data may be transferred outside the EEA.
Deleting your account: on mobile, in the app under Manage account › Delete account (cancel your subscription first); in the web app you can't delete the account yourself, the support team deletes it in about 24 hours. Deleting the account does not cancel the subscription.
Can I use images made with Photoroom commercially?
In short: the free account is for personal, non-commercial use only; images for sales, ads or a store require a paid plan (Pro, Max, Ultra). This section is not legal advice; see Photoroom's Terms page for the conditions.

- Putting someone else's copyrighted content into your own template
- Uploading content containing information such as ID numbers, passport or card numbers
Photoroom states that it claims no ownership of the content you upload and generate; responsibility lies with you.
